Why the intermittent ones are the hard ones.

A fault that trips every time you switch something on is straightforward. We reproduce it, isolate it, prove it and fix it, often inside an hour. The difficult call is the other kind: everything works perfectly for a fortnight, then the board trips at six in the morning, then it behaves again for a week.

The problem is simple to state and awkward to solve. The fault usually will not present while an electrician is standing in front of it. So waiting for it to happen is not a method. The job is to narrow the possibilities down by testing until only one explanation survives, whether or not the fault chooses to appear.

Which is why the most useful thing you can do before we arrive costs nothing. Write down the pattern. What was switched on. What the weather was doing, because water ingress faults track rain. Time of day, because heating and immersion heaters run on timers. Whether it was after a shower, a wash cycle, or nothing at all. Three or four dated notes will genuinely shorten the search, and they are the closest thing to catching the fault in the act.

Bieldside houses make this harder than average for a reason that has nothing to do with their condition. Bigger houses on generous plots carry more circuits, more outbuildings, more buried garden cable and more layers of past work than a uniform estate house. How a fault is actually traced.

Not by looking at it harder. By halving the number of places it can be hiding, over and over, until one is left.

  2. Look before testing. The obvious sources get eliminated first: external accessories full of water, a scorched terminal, a chewed cable in a loft, a light fitting that has been running far hotter than it should.
  3. Isolate and divide. This is the core technique, and it is called half splitting. Split the installation in two, test each half, and the fault is in one of them. Split that half again. Each step halves the search, so even a large installation narrows down in a handful of moves rather than by checking everything.
  4. Insulation resistance, circuit by circuit. This matters more than it sounds. A single global test across the whole board tells you very little, because one poor circuit is masked by all the healthy ones in parallel. Testing each circuit separately is what turns "something is leaking" into "this circuit is leaking".
  5. Measure the standing leakage. Every modern appliance leaks a tiny current to earth by design. Add up enough of them and an RCD sits permanently close to its trip threshold, so anything extra pushes it over. Measuring the actual leakage tells us whether we are chasing a genuine fault or a house that has simply accumulated too many small ones.
  6. Eliminate by load. Circuits get re-energised in a controlled order with appliances brought back one at a time. This is where the tumble dryer, the immersion heater or the outside socket usually gives itself away.
  7. Prove the fix, then re-test. A repair is not finished when the tripping stops. The circuit is tested again and the result recorded, so there is evidence rather than optimism.

Your board changes how findable a fault is

On an older board where one RCD covers half the house, a single fault takes out everything behind it and tells you almost nothing about which circuit is responsible. With an RCBO per circuit, the board has already done the first half of the diagnostic work for you: the device that tripped names the circuit.

That is a genuine reason to consider a board upgrade, though not a reason to buy one to fix a fault you have not found yet.

Sometimes the answer is the tumble dryer

A decent share of "my wiring keeps tripping" calls end with a faulty appliance rather than a faulty installation. That is a good outcome and a cheap one, and we will tell you plainly when that is what the testing shows rather than finding something more expensive to blame.

For everything that is genuinely a small job rather than a project.

The short version: an alteration or addition to an existing circuit gets a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, and a brand new circuit gets a full Electrical Installation Certificate with a schedule of test results. If somebody does work in your house and leaves no certificate at all, that is worth asking about.

The rules that apply to a Bieldside address.

Work is carried out to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, the current IET Wiring Regulations, published in April 2026 and mandatory for all new work from 15 October 2026, when the previous version is withdrawn. It is still the 18th Edition, and there is no 19th.

Part P does not apply in Scotland, and there is no Building Control notification and no competent person scheme here. Those all belong to England and Wales, and they turn up often enough in national guidance to be worth stating plainly. What applies is the Building (Scotland) Regulations and Building Standards, administered for Bieldside by Aberdeen City Council, since AB15 is Aberdeen City and not Aberdeenshire.

A building warrant is not required to rewire or alter an existing house of up to two storeys. It is required for flats and maisonettes and for buildings of three storeys or more, and the duty to obtain one sits with whoever orders the work.

On conservation areas, there is no designation named Bieldside, and the nearest designated area, Pitfodels, is bounded on its western side at the Cults end of Lower Deeside. In practice conservation status controls external appearance rather than internal wiring, so it bites on a meter box position, an external charge point on a principal elevation, or visible cabling, and not on a socket or a light fitting indoors. If you are near a boundary, Aberdeen City Council's planning team will confirm your property's status in a phone call.

If you let a property here, the Repairing Standard requires a satisfactory EICR at least every five years by a competent person, with a copy going to your tenants.

There is a practical argument for not rotating through whoever is cheapest on the day, and it is strongest in exactly this kind of housing.

A large house that has been extended and altered over decades does not have one installation. It has several, joined together, and the useful knowledge is not in any single visit. It is knowing that the garage supply was replaced but the garden lighting was not, that the kitchen circuit was already at capacity, that a previous owner's conservatory was fed off a spur it should not have been.

We keep the certificates and test results from visit to visit, so the second call is faster than the first: the circuit chart already exists and the readings from last time are there to compare against. On an intermittent fault that history is often the single most valuable diagnostic tool available, because a reading that has drifted since last year says something a single snapshot cannot.

It is also worth something at sale. A folder of certificates and dated test results answers a buyer's solicitor immediately, rather than starting an argument about what was done and by whom.

It trips every so often but works fine in between. Can you find that?

Usually yes, though not always on the first visit. An intermittent fault often will not present while we are there, so the job is to narrow it by testing rather than by waiting. Why does my whole house go off when one thing faults?

Because several circuits sit behind one RCD. That is common on older split load boards and it is not a defect, but it does mean a single fault takes out everything behind that device and tells you very little about which circuit caused it. An RCBO per circuit isolates the fault to one circuit and names it for you.

Could it just be an appliance rather than the wiring?

Very often, yes. A failing heating element in a dryer, dishwasher or immersion heater is one of the most common causes of nuisance tripping. Testing separates the installation from what is plugged into it, and if the answer is an appliance you will be told that rather than sold a circuit.

The outside sockets and the garage stopped working. Where do you start?

With the supply to the outbuilding and any external accessories, because those are exposed to weather and are where damage usually is. Buried cable to a garage or garden room that has been nicked at some point in the past is a classic Deeside fault, and it often only shows itself when the ground is wet.

Do you do small jobs, or only big installations?

Small jobs are most of the work here. Sockets, lighting, extractor fans, outdoor supplies, fault finding. Every one of them gets certification appropriate to the work, which is a Minor Works Certificate for an alteration to an existing circuit and a full Electrical Installation Certificate for a new one.

Which council covers Bieldside, and does Part P apply?
