Mannofield homes and what is usually behind their walls
Mannofield sits about two miles south west of Aberdeen city centre, along Great Western Road and around Mannofield Parish Church and the cricket ground at Mannofield Park. It is Aberdeen City, mostly AB15 with a few eastern streets in AB10. Most of its houses went up in the 1930s, so many installations here are on their second or third consumer unit, and some still carry original cable.
Granite villas

Interwar wiring
Does a 1930s Mannofield house need a full rewire?
Only if the cable itself is finished. Plenty of 1930s houses were rewired decades ago and need nothing more than a new consumer unit, so we test before anyone talks about lifting floorboards.
- Signs the cable has had its day. Black rubber or fabric sheathing, round pin sockets, light switches on wooden pattresses and lighting circuits with no earth conductor.
- What the test tells you. Under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 a C1 or C2 code makes a report unsatisfactory. C3 and FI are advisory, though an FI is still worth looking into soon.
- A plastic board is not a fault on its own. New domestic boards go in a non combustible enclosure, but the rules do not condemn an existing one.
- Arc fault devices are your choice in a house. They are only required on socket circuits in high rise flats, HMOs, student blocks and care homes, so we price them as an option.

DIY and sign off
Can I do my own electrics in Mannofield and get them signed off?
You can usually do the work in a Mannofield house without a building warrant, but nobody in Scotland can sign it off for you afterwards. The English Part P route of having a registered electrician certify a homeowner’s job does not exist here, because Part P has never applied in Scotland.
Is it legal in my house?
Usually, yes. Type 1 in Schedule 3 of the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004 exempts work in a house from a warrant, provided the result meets the building standards. The exemption stops at a house with a storey more than 4.5 metres above the ground, so a third floor or converted attic can change the answer.
Why can’t an electrician certify it?
An installation certificate is a signed statement from whoever designed, built and tested the work. An electrician who did none of those three cannot honestly put their name to it, however neat the job looks.
What can you do instead?
We inspect and test what you have done and write it up as a condition report. Anything coded C1 or C2 is explained and priced before we touch it, and the report gives a buyer or a lender something on paper.
