Four things decide a rural charger install, and none of them are the brand on the box.

In the city, most homes sit on a PME supply, the parking is a few metres from the board, and the job is largely the same every time. Out in the shire it is not. You are more likely to be on an overhead supply with your own earth rod, the parking might be across a yard, the main fuse might be 60A, and SSEN may need to approve the work before anything is fitted.

That is why a rural quote given over the phone is a guess. We survey first, then quote in writing. Here is what we are actually looking at when we do.

  • Earthing. PME or TT changes which chargers suit and what must be tested
  • Supply capacity. Your main fuse decides whether load management or an upgrade is needed
  • Distance. The run from board to parking is the biggest cost variable on a rural job
  • Permission. Above 60A, or on a looped supply, SSEN approves before we fit

Earthing

PME or TT, and why it matters far more out here.

This is the part no other Aberdeenshire page explains, and it is the part that most often decides what we can fit.

On a PME supply, the neutral and the earth share a conductor on the way to your property. If that combined conductor is ever lost, metalwork connected to it can rise to a dangerous voltage compared with the real ground outside. Indoors that is unlikely to hurt you. Outdoors, plugged into a car, standing on wet gravel, it is a genuine risk. That is precisely why BS 7671 Section 722 says a PME earth must not simply be used for an outdoor charge point unless one of a defined set of protective methods is applied.

In practice there are two routes:

  • Open PEN protection built into the charger. The unit monitors for the fault itself and disconnects. Most current mainstream home chargers offer this, and it avoids the need for a separate earth rod on the charging circuit.
  • A dedicated earth electrode. An earth rod serving the charging circuit. It is a legitimate route, but it is not a box to tick: the rod has to be sited far enough from buried metalwork connected to the supply, and it has to be tested. Done carelessly it does not achieve what it is meant to.

Rural Aberdeenshire changes the picture again, because a lot of the network out here is overhead, and overhead supplies frequently do not provide a PME earth at all. Those properties run as TT, standing on their own earth electrode. On a genuine TT property the broken conductor problem does not arise in the same way, but the electrode resistance and the disconnection times have to be verified, and older rods are very often corroded, undersized or simply disconnected at some point in the past.

Either way, every charge point gets its own RCD, at least Type A and rated no higher than 30 mA. We confirm the right protective arrangement for your supply at the survey rather than assuming it.

Your main fuse, and why an upgrade is usually the wrong answer.

The real constraint on a rural install is rarely the wiring. It is the main service fuse coming into the property. Domestic supplies are commonly 60A, 80A or 100A, and older rural properties are disproportionately at the lower end.

A 7.4kW charger pulls around 32A on its own. Add an electric shower, an immersion, a cooker and a heat pump, and a 60A supply is exceeded on paper long before anyone plugs a car in. A lot of installers will tell you that means a supply upgrade. Usually it does not.

  • Load management is normally the answer. A CT clamp on the incoming tails measures what the whole property is drawing in real time. The charger throttles itself so the total stays under your fuse rating, then ramps back up when the shower goes off. Most current smart chargers support this natively.
  • A supply upgrade is the fallback. Where the property genuinely cannot work around it, that is an application to SSEN, and SSEN set the charge for it. We will tell you what they quote rather than guess at it.

Load management is almost always cheaper and considerably faster than waiting on a supply upgrade, and on a well specified system you will not notice it happening. This is also why an older farmhouse board matters: if there is no spare way, no RCD protection, or the board is at the end of its life, that conversation comes first. Distance

When the parking is thirty metres from the fuse board.

On a city semi the charger goes on the wall next to the board. On a steading, a smallholding or a house with a long drive, the car parks somewhere else entirely, and that distance is the single biggest variable in the price.

The technical limit is voltage drop. BS 7671 allows a maximum of 3% for fixed current using equipment on a supply taken from the public network, and on a submain feeding a charger we design well inside that to leave headroom. The longer the run, the larger the conductor has to be to stay within it. Burying the cable makes that worse rather than better, because buried and ducted cable sheds heat less effectively than cable clipped in free air, so the same load needs a bigger conductor underground.

For anything beyond a short run to an attached garage, the better design is usually not one long dedicated circuit. It is a submain in armoured cable out to a small distribution board at the outbuilding, with the charger fed from there. It costs a little more on the day and it future proofs the building for lighting, sockets or a second charger later, instead of stranding you with a single cable that does one job.

  • Cable is sized at the survey against the actual route, burial depth and grouping, never off a chart.
  • Armoured cable for any buried or exposed run, correctly protected and terminated.
  • Trenching is the honest cost driver, and depth, ducting and reinstatement all count.

Permission

Does SSEN have to approve it first? Often, yes.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks is the distribution network operator for the north of Scotland. Whether your installer can simply fit the charger, or has to apply and wait, comes down to a threshold that almost nobody explains to customers.

  • Total property demand of 60A or less, with no safety concerns. The installer does not need to apply in advance. We fit the charger and notify SSEN afterwards, using the G98 Form B, within 28 days.
  • Total demand above 60A. The installer must apply to connect and wait for permission before the charger goes in.
  • A looped supply. If your property shares a service cable with a neighbour, which is common in older village terraces and cottage pairs, an application must go in before installation so the cut out can be assessed and the property unlooped where necessary.

SSEN look at whether the property is looped, the style and condition of the cut out, and the age of the existing connection. Older rural connections and ageing cut outs are exactly the things that push a job from notify afterwards into apply and wait, and that is the real reason a rural install can take longer to schedule than a city one.

Farms, Steadings & Three Phase

What three phase actually buys you, and what it does not.

Plenty of Aberdeenshire holdings already have a three phase supply for dryers, workshops, milking plant or larger pumps. Where it is already there, adding charging to it is not a big step. Where it is not, bringing it in is a separate and usually expensive job that SSEN quote individually.

Here is the honest part that the marketing tends to skip. A 22kW AC charger needs a three phase 32A supply, but most electric cars cap their onboard AC charger at 7.4kW on single phase or 11kW on three phase. Fitting a 22kW unit will not make a 7.4kW limited car charge any faster. The genuine reasons to go three phase on a farm are future proofing, running more than one vehicle, and light commercial or fleet use, not headline speed for a single family car.

What three phase really buys you on a working holding is balance. Chargers can be spread across the phases, or a three phase unit with dynamic load management can work around the dryer and the workshop rather than competing with them. On a farm that matters far more than the number on the box.

  • The vehicle rarely parks at the farmhouse, so submain out to a board at the steading is the usual design.
  • Competing loads are the design problem, and dynamic load management is not optional.
  • Two sockets sharing managed load usually beats one large unit for a two vehicle household.
  • Farm shops, campsites, glamping and wedding venues turn a charger into a customer facing asset, which is a different conversation again.

Holiday Lets

Chargers at self catering cottages, and the question owners actually ask.

Deeside, the coastal villages and the castle trail corridor are full of self catering property, and a charger has quietly turned into a booking filter rather than a nicety. Guests search for it.

A let is technically different from a private home in ways that matter:

  • Access control. You do not want the unit free running for passing traffic. App or card based lockout keeps it to your guests.
  • Robustness. Many different people, none of whom have used your unit before. That changes the tethered versus socketed decision, and it changes where you site it.
  • Load management matters more. Guest charging collides with the shower, the hot tub and the heating at changeover time, which is exactly when the property is busiest.
  • Metering per session. If you intend to recover the cost, you need to see the kWh for each stay rather than guess at it.

On the billing itself we will be straight with you: how charging guests for electricity should be treated is a question for your accountant, not your electrician. What we will do is make sure the charger meters each session properly so you have the data to work from. Worth knowing too that a let is a business use, so the domestic grant route below is not the relevant one, and there are separate business and landlord schemes we can point you at.

Grants, Honestly

Start with the bad news, because most installers bury it.

If you own your home and it has a driveway, you are almost certainly not eligible for the UK grant, and you have not been since April 2022. Anyone implying otherwise is selling you something.

Renters & flat owners

The UK chargepoint grant is up to £500 per socket, or 75% of the cost to buy and install, whichever is lower. You need private off street parking and an eligible vehicle. Funded to 31 March 2027. Where you qualify, we handle the application.

Homeowners with a driveway

Not eligible, and honestly so. The old homeowner scheme closed in April 2022 and the earlier £350 figure is long gone. We would rather tell you that now than after you have booked.

Rural Scotland scheme

Scotland runs its own home charging funding for rural and remote postcodes, backed by Transport Scotland through Energy Saving Trust. It is separate from the UK grant, it is decided by postcode, and it opens and closes as funding allows. Much of Aberdeenshire sits in the classifications it targets.

Before you book anything

Check the current position with Energy Saving Trust first. On the Scottish scheme you must have the offer in hand before the installation starts, so the order of events matters.

Can I get a charger fitted if my house is on a TT earthing system with an earth rod?

Yes. A TT property with its own earth electrode is very common on overhead supplies across rural Aberdeenshire, and it is a perfectly normal arrangement to install into. What we check is the condition and resistance of the existing electrode and the disconnection times, because older rods are frequently corroded, undersized or disconnected. Every charge point also gets its own RCD, at least Type A and no higher than 30 mA.

My parking is thirty metres from the house. Can the charger still go there?

Almost always yes. The limit is voltage drop, which BS 7671 caps at 3% for this kind of equipment, so the longer the run the larger the cable has to be. Do I need permission from SSEN before a charger is installed?

It depends on your total demand. If the property is 60A or less with no safety concerns, we can fit the charger and notify SSEN afterwards using the G98 Form B within 28 days. If demand is above 60A, or your property is looped so it shares a service cable with a neighbour, SSEN must approve it before installation. Looped properties always need the application first so the cut out can be assessed. We establish which applies at the survey.

Do I need a supply upgrade for an EV charger?

Usually not. Where the main fuse cannot carry the charger alongside everything else, load management is normally the answer: a sensor on the incoming tails lets the charger throttle itself so the total stays under your fuse rating, then ramp back up. It is cheaper and much faster than a supply upgrade. Where an upgrade genuinely is needed, that is an SSEN application and SSEN set the cost, which we will tell you rather than estimate.

Can a charger be installed in a detached garage, steading or outbuilding?

Yes, and it is one of the most common rural jobs we do. The right approach is normally armoured cable out to a small distribution board at the outbuilding, with the charger fed from there, rather than a single long circuit. That gives you lighting, sockets and the option of a second charger later without digging the trench twice.

Can I charge faster with three phase on a farm?

Only sometimes, and it is worth being honest about it. A 22kW charger needs a three phase 32A supply, but most cars cap their onboard AC charging at 7.4kW single phase or 11kW three phase, so a 22kW unit will not speed up a car that cannot accept it. Three phase is worth it for future proofing, multiple vehicles, and balancing charging around dryers and workshop loads. If the supply is not already three phase, bringing it in is an SSEN quote and rarely worth it for charging speed alone.

Our broadband and mobile signal are poor. Will a smart charger still work?

Yes. Every new home charger sold in Great Britain has had to be smart since June 2022, and part of that requirement is that the unit must still be able to charge your car if the communications connection is lost. You may lose scheduling and app features while it is offline, but you will not lose the ability to charge. It is a fair question out here and the answer is a good one.

Is there a grant for a home charger in rural Aberdeenshire?

Possibly, depending on who you are. The UK grant of up to £500 per socket is for renters and flat owners with private off street parking, funded to 31 March 2027, and homeowners with a driveway have not been eligible since April 2022. Separately, Scotland runs its own funding for rural and remote postcodes through Energy Saving Trust, decided by postcode, which opens and closes with funding. Will an old farmhouse fuse board need replacing first?

Sometimes. The charger needs its own dedicated, properly protected circuit. If the board is full with no spare way, has no RCD protection, or is simply at the end of its life, that is dealt with first. A full RCBO consumer unit is from £550, up to £950 + VAT depending on circuit count, and we can normally do the board and the charger in the same visit.

Can I install a charger at a holiday let and bill guests for the electricity?

You can install one, and it is increasingly a booking feature rather than a luxury. We will specify it with access control so it is not free running for passers by, and with per session metering so you can see the kWh for each stay. How you treat that income is a question for your accountant rather than your electrician, so we will give you the data and leave the tax treatment to them. A let is a business use, so the domestic grant is not the route, but there are separate business and landlord schemes.
