EV Charging In Westhill

The town that was built for the home charger.

Switching to an electric car in Westhill is easier than in most of the North East, and the reason is the town itself. Drawn up in 1963 and grown through the oil years, Westhill is a planned town of detached and semi homes with their own driveways, seven miles west of Aberdeen on the A944, firmly in Aberdeenshire rather than the city. A private off street space beside the front door is exactly what a tidy 7.4kW charger wants. Add a population of around twelve thousand, heavy on energy sector commuters who rack up the miles, and the modern estates plus the new build at Burnland Meadows make this prime home charging country. Then there is the Subsea Capital on the doorstep, with real demand for workplace charging. Steven Watt fits both.

  • Smart by law, solar ready, 7.4kW home chargers from £900 + VAT
  • Tidy driveway installs for the estates and Burnland Meadows
  • Workplace charging for the Arnhall and Westhill business parks
  • We handle the DNO notification through the ENA process

Westhill EV Scenarios

Driveway, garage, or a business car park. We wire them all.

The situations Westhill drivers and the local business parks come to us with most. Each one has its own answer.

Driveway Home Charger

The everyday Westhill install. A 7.4kW smart unit on the wall by the drive, a cable run of around 5 to 15 metres, commissioned and paired to your phone the same day.

New Build at Burnland Meadows

CALA's Burnland Meadows and the newer plots often arrive with a modern RCBO board ready for the load. Among the fastest, neatest installs we do.

Solar Ready Charger

Already have panels, or planning them? A Zappi or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro diverts your own solar surplus into the car instead of exporting it cheap.

Business Car Park

Staff and visitor charging for the Arnhall and Westhill parks. Single or three phase, load managed so the supply is never overrun, with access control where needed.

Older Estate Upgrade

An original 1970s or 1980s Westhill home may need a single RCBO added, an earthing tidy up, or a fuseboard upgrade before the charger goes on. Quoted clearly after the survey.

Two EVs At Home

Two cars on one driveway is common here. Two 7.4kW chargers on load balancing, so neither trips the supply when both plug in overnight.

Angle One: The Modern Estates

Why Westhill driveways suit a home charger so well.

Westhill was not laid out in tight granite terraces the way old Aberdeen was. It was planned from scratch, and the planning shows in the parking. The heavy 1980s to 2000s expansion and the new build at Burnland Meadows are dominated by detached and semi homes, almost all with a private driveway or garage. That is the single thing a home EV charger needs most, a fixed off street space within cable reach of the consumer unit, and Westhill has it by the thousand.

It also has the drivers. With around twelve thousand residents and a heavy energy sector commuter demographic running daily miles into Aberdeen and beyond, the sums for charging at home overnight rather than at a public rapid stack up fast. A 7.4kW charger replenishes a typical commute several times over in the cheap overnight window.

For most Westhill homes the install is straightforward: a smart 7.4kW unit on the external wall, a cable run of 5 to 15 metres, a dedicated circuit with the correct RCD protection, and full commissioning the same day. Newer homes often already carry a modern RCBO board that takes the new circuit without an upgrade. Older stock may need a board or earthing tidy up, which we always quote separately and only after you agree the price.

Angle Two: The Subsea Capital

Workplace charging for the Arnhall and Westhill business parks.

Westhill is not only a commuter town. It is one of the world's centres for subsea and underwater engineering, often called the Subsea Capital. Subsea 7 sit in Arnhall Business Park, TechnipFMC are on the Westhill Industrial Estate, and the Westhill and Arnhall parks are full of offices, workshops and large staff car parks. As the cars in those car parks turn electric, the employers need somewhere for staff and fleet drivers to plug in. That is real local demand for workplace charging that most home focused installers walk straight past.

We handle the commercial side properly, scheduled around your trading and shift patterns:

  • Single or three phase. Home chargers are 7.4kW single phase. A business car park can be single or three phase depending on your supply, which opens up faster 22kW units where the supply allows.
  • Dynamic load balancing. Software throttles each charger so the total never exceeds your incoming supply, even when every bay is in use at once.
  • Access control and billing. RFID or app authentication keeps the chargers for staff, visitors or fleet, and records who charged what for reporting.
  • One contractor. Survey, supply check, install and certification handled by the same NICEIC approved team that does the homes.

If you run a unit in Arnhall or the Westhill Industrial Estate and your people are asking for charging, our guide to workplace EV charging for Aberdeen businesses covers the case for it, and a phone call gets you a survey.

The Honest Detail

Smart by law, solar ready by choice, and who does the paperwork.

The bits buyers worry about, the hidden costs and the legal wording, set out plainly so the "from £900" figure is honest.

Smart is the law. Solar ready is the unit we pick.

Every new home charger sold in Great Britain must be smart by law, under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, in force since 30 June 2022. Smart means scheduling, default off peak charging, and a randomised start delay. The law does not require your charger to be solar or renewables ready. We simply choose units that are. Every charger we fit is smart, as the law requires, and solar ready, so it can charge from your own panels when you add them.

The DNO notification, handled by us.

A 7.4kW charger draws up to 32A, and that new load has to be notified to the Distribution Network Operator through the Energy Networks Association (ENA) process. We handle that paperwork for you, usually applying before the install, or fitting load management where the supply is tight. Most installers leave this to chance. We do not, because a missed notification is the sort of thing that comes back to bite you later.

Cable runs and consumer units, quoted straight.

Our prices include a cable run up to 15 metres. Runs longer than that, a consumer unit upgrade, or an earthing upgrade are chargeable extras, and we quote them after the free survey rather than springing them on the day. On the older Westhill estates a board or earthing tidy up is sometimes needed first. You will see the full figure before any work starts.

The grant, told accurately.

From 1 April 2026 the EV chargepoint grant is £500 per socket, but only for renters and flat owners with private off street parking and landlord or freeholder permission, funded to 31 March 2027. A typical Westhill homeowner with their own driveway is not eligible, so we will not pretend you can claim it. The old £350 homeowner grant no longer exists.

Westhill Property Knowledge

The build date sets the charger job.

Westhill arrived in waves, and each wave carried the wiring of its day. Knowing which one a home came from tells us what the charger needs before we start.

Original 1960s & 1970s Estates

The first waves of the planned town. Often a rewirable fuse board and dated earthing. The charger usually waits behind a consumer unit or earthing upgrade, all quoted up front.

1980s to 2000s Expansion

The bulk of Westhill. Usually sound wiring with a driveway. A single RCBO is often all the board needs to take the new dedicated charger circuit.

Burnland Meadows & New Build

CALA's Burnland Meadows and the modern plots. A modern RCBO board is usually already in place, so these are the fastest and tidiest installs we do.

Arnhall & Westhill Parks

The subsea engineering cluster. Three phase supplies are common, opening the door to faster units and multi bay car park charging for staff and fleet.

Qualified For EV Work

The EV charging qualification that should sit behind your install.

An EV charger is a dedicated electrical installation, not a plug in job. Steven Watt holds the City and Guilds award for EV charging design and installation, paired with the 18th Edition wiring regulations and the core electrical diploma. These are individual qualifications, held on top of our NICEIC approved contractor status.

How much does an EV charger cost to install in Westhill?

A 7.4kW smart home charger starts from £900 + VAT installed, with a cable run up to 15 metres on a single phase supply. Our smart package with an Ohme Home Pro or TeltoCharge is from £995 + VAT, and the premium solar ready package with a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro or Zappi is from £1,195 + VAT. Cable runs beyond 15 metres, a consumer unit upgrade, or an earthing upgrade are chargeable extras, quoted after the free survey so the starting price stays honest.

Does the law really require a smart charger, and is solar ready required too?

Every new home charger fitted in Great Britain must be smart by law, under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, in force since 30 June 2022. That means scheduling, default off peak charging, and a randomised start delay. The law does not require chargers to be solar or renewables ready. We choose units that are solar ready as a feature, so every charger we fit is smart as the law requires, and can charge from your own panels when you add them.

Can you install an EV charger on a new build at Burnland Meadows?

Yes, and these are often our quickest installs. The modern Westhill estates and the new build at Burnland Meadows usually have a driveway and a modern RCBO consumer unit already able to take the new dedicated charger circuit. We fit a smart 7.4kW unit, handle the DNO notification, commission it, and pair it to your phone the same day. A 7.4kW smart home charger starts from £900 + VAT after the free survey.

Do you fit chargers for the Arnhall and Westhill business parks?

Yes. Westhill is a subsea engineering hub with large staff car parks, and we install workplace charging for the units across Arnhall Business Park and the Westhill Industrial Estate. A business car park can run single or three phase depending on the supply, with dynamic load balancing so the chargers never overrun your incoming capacity, plus RFID or app access control where you need to keep them for staff, visitors or fleet. We survey and quote on site.

Do you handle the DNO notification for the new charger load?

Yes, we handle the paperwork. A 7.4kW charger draws up to 32A, and that new load has to be notified to the Distribution Network Operator through the Energy Networks Association process. We usually apply before the install, or fit load management where the supply is tight. Many installers skip this. We do not, because the notification is part of doing the job properly.

Can I claim a grant for a home charger in Westhill?

Probably not, if you own a Westhill home with your own driveway. From 1 April 2026 the EV chargepoint grant is £500 per socket, but only for renters and flat owners with private off street parking and landlord or freeholder permission, funded to 31 March 2027. A typical driveway homeowner is not eligible, and the old £350 homeowner grant no longer exists. If you rent or own a flat, ask us and we will tell you honestly whether you qualify.
