Is a home charger expensive to install?
Less than most people expect when the board sits in an integral garage or on the same wall as the drive, which many Westhill houses have. The price climbs when the cable has to cross the house, run out to a detached garage, or go under block paving, and when an older board has no room or no RCD protection. We show each of those as its own line so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
What a cheap online quote can leave out
- Earthing. Open PEN protection or an earth rod, now compulsory for an outdoor charger on a PME supply.
- DC fault detection. Built into the charger or added as a Type B RCD.

The 2026 wiring rules on a Westhill driveway
Amendment 4 is the edition every new circuit is certified to from 15 October 2026. For a charger on the outside of a house, four points matter most.
- PME supplies. Regulation 722.411.4.1 has dropped the old "not reasonably practicable" escape route. The charger needs an earth electrode, an open PEN device that disconnects within 5 seconds, or a voltage monitor that trips below 207V or above 253V.
- TT supplies with an earth rod. We measure the rod and the RCD trip times, and replace a rod that does not test well before the charger is connected.
- 6mA DC detection. Built into the charger to BS IEC 62955, with a Type A RCD upstream, or provided by a Type B RCD.
- No AFDD. An arc fault detection device is not required on a circuit feeding EV charging equipment, so it should not appear in your quote.

Does your Westhill fuse board need upgrading first?
Usually not. If your board has a spare way and RCD protection, the charger circuit goes straight in, or a small dedicated EV unit is mounted beside it, like the one pictured.

Is there free EV charger installation in Westhill?
Not for most homeowners. Grant funding exists for renters, flat owners, landlords and businesses, and it reduces the cost rather than covering all of it.
You rent, or own a flat
The OZEV grant for renters and flat owners pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing one socket, up to £500, and runs until 31 March 2027. You need private off street parking you have the right to use, and written permission from your landlord or freeholder. OZEV must approve the application before work starts; we then claim the grant and it comes off your invoice.

Why home charging wins day to day
A 7.4kW charger adds about 7kWh for each hour plugged in, so an overnight session on an off peak rate easily covers the A944 commute into Aberdeen and back. The car is ready each morning with no queue and no detour to a rapid charger.
What is the 80/20 rule for EV charging?
Keep the battery between roughly 20% and 80% for everyday use, and fill to 100% only before a long journey. Most lithium ion packs last better away from the extremes, and rapid chargers slow sharply after about 80%. Follow your car maker's advice first, as some battery types are designed to be charged to full.

Because quotes rarely cover the same work. A low figure may include only a few metres of cable, leave out the open PEN or earth rod protection an outdoor charger now needs, or skip the SSEN notification. Ask for the cable length in metres, the earthing method and who notifies SSEN in writing, and compare like with like.
Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
Yes, any competent electrician can legally install one, but the circuit must meet Section 722 of BS 7671, SSEN must be notified, and only an OZEV authorised installer can claim a chargepoint grant for you. What is the 80/20 rule for EV charging?
