Aberdeen's Consumer Unit Specialist

The brain of your home electrics. Properly upgraded, properly certified.

The consumer unit, sometimes called the fuse box or fuse board, is the single most important piece of electrical equipment in your Aberdeen home. It distributes the incoming mains supply to every circuit, protects each circuit against overload and earth faults, and is your first line of defence against an electrical fire or shock.

Faithful Spark Electricians is your local NICEIC approved consumer unit specialist, holding the City & Guilds 2391-52 (Inspection & Testing) qualifications required for any board upgrade. Every install is led personally by Steven Watt and signed off with a NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate, valid for letting agents, insurers, and Aberdeen City Council.

Since March 2024, the Scottish Repairing Standard requires every circuit in a rented property's consumer unit to have RCD protection. Many older Aberdeen split load boards now fail an EICR until they are upgraded to a full RCBO board. Faithful Spark fits modern RCBO boards (every circuit individually protected) as the standard install across Aberdeen.

Consumer Unit FAQs

Common questions about consumer unit upgrades in Aberdeen.

Don't see your question? Call 07304 027013 or email us. We come back the same business day.

How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost in Aberdeen?

A typical 100A domestic upgrade in Aberdeen costs £550 to £950 + VAT, fully installed and certified. Small flats with 4 to 6 ways start at £500. Larger detached homes with 12+ ways are £800 to £1,100 + VAT. Three phase domestic is £1,200 to £1,800 + VAT. Bundle pricing available with EV charger, EICR, or solar install.

How long does the install take?

A typical Aberdeen domestic upgrade takes 1 to 2 hours on site. Power is off the main switch for around 45 to 75 minutes. We then test every circuit and issue the NICEIC certificate the same day.

Do I have to upgrade my fuse box?

If you are an owner occupier, no, an older board is still legal under current regulations as long as it is in good condition. However, if you are a landlord and your EICR comes back Unsatisfactory because the board lacks RCD protection on every circuit, the March 2024 Scottish Repairing Standard requires the issue to be resolved within 28 days.

What is the difference between RCD, MCB, and RCBO?

MCB protects against overload (too much current). RCD protects against earth faults (current leaking to earth, the protection that saves lives). RCBO is both functions combined in a single device. Modern best practice is one RCBO per circuit, which is what we install as standard.

Do I need a Type B RCBO for my EV charger circuit?

Type A is sufficient for most EV chargers if the charger itself includes a Type B RDC. The Zappi, Hypervolt, Ohme, and Tesla Wall Connector all include this. Some older or budget chargers require a dedicated Type B RCBO upstream, which we quote separately at £80 to £120 + VAT.

What brand of board will you install?

Hager metal RCBO boards are our standard fit. Schneider Acti9, MK Sentry, Crabtree Starbreaker, and Wylex Amendment 2 are all available on request, typically £40 to £100 + VAT extra. All are fully certified to BS EN 61439 and recommended in BS 7671.

Will my insurance be affected?

A properly installed and certified consumer unit by a NICEIC approved contractor is universally accepted by UK home insurers. We provide a NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate at completion. A non compliant install or DIY work can invalidate your home insurance, so make sure your installer is NICEIC approved and signs off with a proper certificate.

What about the Scottish Repairing Standard March 2024 update?

The Repairing Standard now requires RCD protection on every circuit in privately rented properties. Older split load boards that used to pass now fail the EICR with a C2 code, which must be remedied within 28 days. A full RCBO board upgrade brings the property fully compliant in a single 1 to 2 hour visit.

Do you cover all Aberdeen postcodes?

Yes. We cover the full city from AB10 through AB25, plus AB31 (Banchory) and AB32 (Westhill). Outlying villages should be confirmed by phone, but mainstream Aberdeen postcodes carry no travel surcharge.

Can you do the EICR retest at the same visit?

Yes. If the EICR identified the consumer unit as the main reason for an Unsatisfactory result, we carry out the board upgrade and the full circuit retest as a single visit. The new certificate supersedes the previous one and is sent to your letting agent or council if requested.
