What a domestic electrician in Aberdeen does

A domestic electrician installs, repairs, tests and certifies the fixed wiring in a home, from the consumer unit out to every socket, light, shower and outside supply. In practice the work falls into three kinds of visit.

  • Installing. New circuits and sockets, kitchen and bathroom wiring, lighting, electric showers, electric heating and thermostats, extractor fans, garden power and EV chargers.
  • Repairing. Tracing why a circuit trips, why a socket is dead or why a light flickers, then fixing the cause rather than the symptom.
  • Testing and certifying. EICRs for owners, buyers and landlords, PAT testing of landlord supplied appliances, and a certificate for every piece of new work so you can prove it meets BS 7671.

Showers, lighting and heating

Most Aberdeen call outs are not a rewire. They are an electric shower that has stopped or needs a bigger circuit, LED downlights in a kitchen or bathroom, outdoor and security lighting on its own protected circuit, or storage heaters and electric heating that will not come on in a cold snap. Each one is priced before we start and certified when we finish. See our pages on kitchen electrics in Aberdeen, bathroom electrical work and outdoor power and lighting.

A commercial electrician does the same three things on a larger, often three phase, supply in a workplace. We do both, which is why the commercial boards further down this page sit beside home EV chargers. For business premises, see our pages on electrical fit outs, commercial lighting installation and our work as a three phase electrician in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen homes we work in

Granite tenement flats
Holburn Street, Crown Street and Great Western Road. Older wiring in shared buildings. A rewire in a flat needs a building warrant from Aberdeen City Council, so we plan it in from the start.
Interwar and post war houses
Rosemount, Mannofield and Mid Stocket. Original lighting circuits, lath and plaster ceilings and fuse boards that predate RCD protection. Usually a board change and an EICR before anything bigger.
Newer estates
Bridge of Don, Kingswells, Countesswells and Cove Bay. Mostly EV chargers, extra circuits and garden power on boards that have room for them.

Tell us the property type and the postcode when you call. It shapes the price more than anything else.

Prices

What an electrician costs in Aberdeen

These are our own figures for 2026, not an industry average. The final price is confirmed in writing before any work starts.

How much does an electrician cost in Scotland?

It depends on the job, and you get a clear price from us before any work starts. Fault finding is £80 to £150 + VAT for the first hour, and an urgent call out is £150 to £250 + VAT with the first hour included.

How much should an electrician charge per day?

We do not sell a day rate. Short jobs get a clear price before any work starts. Anything that runs longer, such as a board change, a rewire or an EV charger, gets a fixed price after a free survey, so the total is known before we start however many days it takes. If we find a new fault part way through, we quote it before we touch it.

Original consumer unit on Park Place, Aberdeen, with two separate switches and crowded wiring before replacement
Before: the original board on Park Place, Aberdeen
September 2026 · Park Place, Aberdeen AB11

Consumer unit replacement in a city centre flat

The old board had two separate switches and no linked main switch, so nothing isolated the whole flat in one action. The wiring inside was crowded and the circuits shared older RCD protection. We replaced it with a metal FuseBox board with an RCBO on every circuit, a surge protection device and one clearly labelled main switch, then tested the installation and issued an Electrical Installation Certificate.

Ohme EV charger with its cable coiled on a holster beside a separate EV consumer unit on an Aberdeen house wall
After: Ohme charger and dedicated EV board, Aberdeen
September 2026 · Aberdeen driveway

Home EV charger with its own consumer unit

An Aberdeen customer wanted to charge overnight on an off peak tariff without a cable across the drive. We mounted an Ohme Home Pro beside a dedicated EV consumer unit, clipped the external cabling to the wall and fitted a holster so the lead stays off the ground. The circuit was tested and certified before we left.

Before you book anyone

How to find and check a registered electrician in Aberdeen

The quickest check is the NICEIC Find a Tradesperson search, which lets you look up certified electrical businesses by location and confirm a firm is registered before it sets foot in your home. Then check four more things on any firm you are comparing.

  1. The company matches the register. The name and company number on the quote should match the register and Companies House. Ours is Faithful Spark Electricians Ltd, SC821028.
  2. The qualification fits the job. For an EICR, ask for City and Guilds 2391-52 in inspection and testing. For an EV charger, City and Guilds 2921-34.
  3. The insurance is in force. Ask for the public liability certificate before work starts. Ours is £2M and available on request.
  4. The reviews come from more than one place. Google plus a vetted directory such as Aberdeen Trusted Trader is harder to fake than one platform.

Is there a list of registered electricians? There is no single government list, because electricians in the UK are not licensed by law. The NICEIC register is the one most Scottish firms appear on, and TrustMark lists businesses that meet its government endorsed standard. We are on both, and we would rather you checked than took our word for it.

Scotland, not England

The electrical rules that apply in Aberdeen

Aberdeen follows Scottish building standards, so some advice written for England is simply wrong here. These are the points that change what an Aberdeen job involves.

  • Part P is not an Aberdeen rule. It is an England and Wales building regulation. National guides and templated electrician pages still quote it for Scottish addresses, and it does not apply.
  • Building warrants come from the council. Rewiring an existing house of up to two storeys does not need a warrant. A rewire in a flat or maisonette, or in any building of three storeys or more, does, which takes in most of the city's granite tenements. The owner applies, and we tell you at survey whether your job needs one.
  • Landlords have three duties. An EICR at least every five years, PAT checks on appliances the landlord supplies, and at least one 30mA RCD in the main consumer unit, normally covering the sockets. A dual RCD board usually satisfies that last one, so it is rarely a reason on its own to change a board.
  • EICR codes changed in 2026. On a report issued under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 only C1 and C2 make the result unsatisfactory. C3 and FI, where further investigation is advised, are advisory, but an FI in a rented home should still be looked into promptly, as the Scottish Government's Repairing Standard guidance for landlords explains. Older reports use older wording, so check the edition printed on yours.

Every Aberdeen job we do is certified to Amendment 4:2026, and if a warrant applies we say so in writing on the quote.

Which council is yours?

Aberdeen City Council
The city, Bridge of Don, Dyce, Kingswells, Countesswells, Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter.
Aberdeenshire Council
Westhill, Maryculter and the rest of the shire.

Maryculter is the one that catches people out. It sits across the Dee from Peterculter but under a different council.

Not sure if your job needs a warrant or a new board?

Ask us. We will tell you on the phone or at a free survey, and put it in writing with the price.

Who comes to your door

The team doing the work in Aberdeen

Steven Watt runs Faithful Spark Electricians. He began as a Royal Navy apprentice in 2001, started the business in 2023 and incorporated Faithful Spark Electricians Ltd on 29 August 2024. Today Steven leads our own team, with Callum working alongside him, so the people who survey an Aberdeen job are the people who carry it out. We do not pass your enquiry on to another firm.

Steven holds City and Guilds 2391-52 (inspection and testing), 2382-22 (the BS 7671 wiring regulations), 2365-03 (Level 3 electrical installations) and 2921-34 (EV charging installation). How an Aberdeen job runs

  • 1. Call or message. Give us the address, what is wrong or what you want added, and any deadline such as a tenancy start, an insurance renewal or a sale.
  • 2. A clear price. Small jobs are priced on the call. Bigger work gets a free survey and a fixed written price within one working day.
  • 3. Our own team does the work. Steven and Callum carry out the job to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, with no subcontractors.
  • 4. Tested, certified, tidied. Every circuit is tested, the certificate is yours to keep, and the off cuts leave with us.

FAQs

Questions people ask before hiring an electrician in Aberdeen

Something else? Call 07304 027013 during opening hours, or send us a message.

How much does an electrician cost in Scotland?

It depends on the job, and you get a clear price from us before any work starts. In Aberdeen, fault finding is £80 to £150 + VAT for the first hour, an urgent call out is £150 to £250 + VAT including the first hour, a domestic EICR starts at £150 + VAT and a consumer unit upgrade is £550 to £950 + VAT. Bigger jobs get a fixed written price after a free survey.

How much should an electrician charge per day?

We do not charge by the day. Short jobs get a clear price before any work starts, and anything longer, such as a consumer unit change, a rewire or an EV charger, gets a fixed written price after a free survey. That price covers the whole job however long it takes, and anything new we find is quoted before we start on it.

What is the best way to find an electrician in Aberdeen?

Start with the NICEIC Find a Tradesperson register or the Aberdeen Trusted Trader directory, then compare two or three firms on published prices, named qualifications and reviews from more than one platform. Ask who will actually do the work and whether the quote is fixed. We publish all of that on this page.

Is there a list of registered electricians?

There is no single government list, because electricians in the UK are not licensed by law. The main register is the NICEIC Find a Tradesperson search, and TrustMark lists firms that meet its government endorsed standard. Faithful Spark Electricians Ltd appears on both, under NICEIC enrolment 620239 and TrustMark licence 4205123.

Are you NICEIC approved, and are you on TrustMark and Checkatrade?

Yes. Faithful Spark Electricians is a NICEIC Approved Contractor, enrolment 620239, TrustMark registered under 4205123, an Aberdeen Trusted Trader and listed on Checkatrade. The NICEIC, TrustMark and Trusted Trader entries can be checked on each register. Steven Watt holds City and Guilds 2365-03, 2382-22, 2391-52 and 2921-34.

What can a domestic electrician do?

A domestic electrician installs, repairs, tests and certifies the fixed wiring in a home: consumer units, rewires, new circuits and sockets, lighting, electric showers and heating, EV chargers and EICRs. Every piece of new work comes with a certificate showing it meets BS 7671.

Can a handyman do electrical work in Scotland?

A handyman can swap a like for like fitting, such as a light fitting or a socket front. New circuits, a consumer unit change and work in kitchens and bathrooms should be done by a competent electrician who tests the work and issues an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate. Part P is an England and Wales rule and does not apply in Scotland. Here the questions are whether the job needs a building warrant and whether it meets BS 7671, and insurers, letting agents and buyers' solicitors increasingly ask for the certificate. Read more in our guide to doing your own electrical work in Scotland.

Do you cover every Aberdeen postcode?

Yes. We work across AB10 to AB25, from the city centre and the West End to Bridge of Don, Dyce, Cove Bay, Cults and Peterculter, plus Westhill and Maryculter just over the boundary. We confirm whether any travel charge applies to your address when you book, never after the work.

Can you come out for an electrical emergency in Aberdeen?

Yes, within opening hours. For a genuine safety concern such as a burning smell, sparking or an RCD that will not reset, call 07304 027013 and we aim to attend the same day, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm or Saturday 9am to 1pm. The call out is £150 to £250 + VAT including the first hour.

Do I need a building warrant for electrical work in Aberdeen?

Sometimes. Rewiring an existing house of up to two storeys does not need a warrant. A rewire in a flat or maisonette, or in any building of three storeys or more, does, and the owner applies to the council. We tell you at survey whether your job needs one.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents in Aberdeen?

Yes. We carry out EICRs, PAT testing and remedial work on rented flats, houses and HMOs across the city. A domestic EICR starts at £150 + VAT for the main board and first 5 circuits, and we can schedule several nearby properties on the same day.
