Is Westhill Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire?
Westhill is in Aberdeenshire, historically part of the old Gordon district. It sits about seven miles west of Aberdeen city centre on the A944 with an AB32 postcode, and the council lists it as Ward 13, Westhill and District. That matters for building work: where a warrant is needed for electrical work in Westhill, it comes from Aberdeenshire Council, not Aberdeen City Council. We say at survey whether yours needs one.
A planned town that is ageing all at once
Westhill was planned in the 1960s, the first houses went up from 1968, and the town grew quickly with the North Sea oil and gas industry. Whole streets were built together, so whole streets now have wiring of the same age. A house from that first phase is well past fifty years old, and if the fuse board looks original the cable behind it probably is too. That is where an EICR earns its fee before anyone talks about a rewire.
1980s to 2000s homes and the newer estates
Most later Westhill houses have sound cable but an old board, too few sockets and nothing for an EV or a home office. Many have also been extended, so one house can hold two generations of wiring. The usual job here is a modern consumer unit, extra circuits and a charger on the drive rather than a full rewire. Around Elrick, the older settlement the town grew around, and in Westhill's bungalows, careful socket and lighting upgrades matter more than a rewire. The rules behind an electrical job in Westhill
