Peterculter is in Aberdeen City, and its houses span four eras
Culter sits on the north bank of the Dee where the Culter Burn joins it, about eight miles west of Aberdeen city centre on the A93 North Deeside Road. Two things shape an electrical job here: the council and the age of the house.
Is Peterculter in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire?
Peterculter is in Aberdeen City, not Aberdeenshire, despite feeling like a country village. Aberdeen City Council places the Culter Community Council area in its Lower Deeside ward, and the postcode is AB14. So where a job in Peterculter needs a building warrant, the owner applies to Aberdeen City Council. Maryculter, just over the river, is the opposite case and falls under Aberdeenshire Council.
The granite village core
The older cottages and houses around North Deeside Road have solid granite walls and wiring that is often original or updated once, decades ago. Cable has to go through floor voids and existing routes rather than straight into stone, so these homes need a survey before anyone quotes a rewire.
Post war streets
The streets that filled in around the old village tend to show tired lighting circuits, missing main bonding and rewirable fuse boards still in service. An EICR usually settles whether a new consumer unit is enough or whether the cable itself is due.
Modern estates, steadings and mill era homes
Newer private estates on the edges of Culter have sound wiring and driveways, which suits EV chargers, extra circuits and garden sockets. Converted steadings, flats and homes from the paper mill era have odd layouts that need a rewire planned around the building rather than a standard pattern.

What an older house rewire looks like with our team
This photo is from one of our rewires in Fraserburgh, not Peterculter, and we label it that way. We show it because a high ceilinged room with sash windows is close to what we expect in the older granite houses of the Culter village core.
- Routes planned before boards come up. In solid stone houses we use floor voids and existing routes wherever we can, and only chase walls where nothing else will do.
- Positions that suit the room. Sockets and switches go where the room is actually used, which matters in layouts that have grown over a century.
- Certificate at the end. The finished installation is tested and an Electrical Installation Certificate to BS 7671 is issued.

Steven Watt holds City and Guilds 2365-03 (Level 3 electrical installations), 2382-22 (BS 7671), 2391-52 (inspection and testing) and 2921-34 (EV charging). The business is also TrustMark registered and an OZEV authorised installer.
Scotland, not England
The rules that apply to electrical work in Peterculter
Much of the advice online is written for England. These are the points that hold for a house or a let in AB14.
Warrants come from Aberdeen City Council
Rewiring an existing house of up to two storeys does not need a building warrant. A flat or maisonette, or a building of three storeys or more, does, and in Peterculter the owner applies to Aberdeen City Council. We tell you at survey and note it on the quote.
Part P is not a Scottish rule
Part P belongs to the building regulations of England and Wales and has never applied in Scotland. A quote for a Culter job that cites it was written for the wrong country.
Private lets need an EICR every five years
A private rented home in Scotland must have its electrical installation inspected at least every five years, with checks on any appliances the landlord supplies. Each report states when the next inspection is recommended.
How EICR codes work under Amendment 4
Under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 only a C1 or C2 makes a report unsatisfactory. C3 and FI are advisory, though an FI in a rented home should still be investigated promptly. Our reports explain each code in plain words and price any remedials separately.
