The Honest Question

Does solar actually work this far north?

Yes, and we will not pretend otherwise, but we also will not pretend Aberdeenshire is the south coast. Modern panels generate from daylight rather than direct sun, so they still produce on a grey day. Aberdeen sits at about 57 degrees north, so the yearly yield here is lower than in southern England, which mostly means a slightly longer payback, not that solar does not work.

What matters more is the shape of the year. Summer at this latitude is genuinely good, with very long daylight hours giving strong generation from spring through to autumn. Winter is the honest caveat: generation is at its lowest in December and January, exactly when heating demand is highest. So solar on its own will not run electric heating or a heat pump through a Scottish winter, and anyone who tells you it will is selling.

Why An Electrician, Not A Badge

The money is in the power you use, not the power you sell.

Here is the part the sales scripts skip. Being paid for electricity you export to the grid sounds good, but the export rate is only a few pence per unit, and a system without a battery exports most of its surplus for exactly that. Every unit you use yourself, on the other hand, saves you the full price you would have paid to import it, which is several times more. In Scotland, that gap is where the value of solar really sits.

Making a home use more of its own generation is an electrical integration job. It is about the battery, the way the array is sized and split, how it ties into the consumer unit, and how it works with an EV charger and a smart tariff. That is our trade. We are NICEIC approved electricians, and on a rural property with TT earthing, getting the earthing, bonding and protection right when you add a generating source is not a box tick, it is the safety of the whole thing.

On the accreditation question, we will be straight: there is a separate certification scheme whose main job is to open the door to export tariffs and, in the past, to grants. We do not hold it and we do not badge ourselves with it. If being paid to export is your main goal, you will need an installer who does hold that scheme, and we will tell you that plainly rather than talk you out of it. A battery does the everyday job of storing the surplus your panels make during the day so you can use it in the evening and overnight, instead of buying it back from the grid at peak prices. Rural & Farm

This is where solar in Aberdeenshire really differs from a city terrace, and where being a rural electrician counts. Farmhouses, steadings, barns and agricultural sheds have large, often unshaded roofs, and estates have room for ground mounted arrays, so there is scope for a bigger system than a town roof allows, and a bigger system makes the battery and self use case stronger.

  • TT earthing and overhead supplies. Much of rural Aberdeenshire is on TT earthing. Adding a generating source means the earthing, bonding and protection have to be right, which is our core work, not an afterthought.
  • Three phase and farm loads. Grain dryers, workshops and cold stores on three phase supplies can have daytime demand that solar offsets well, with outbuilding mounted arrays and sub boards.
  • Weak grid and off grid. Long single phase spurs, voltage issues and remote plots. Solar and battery reduce reliance on a weak import supply, and genuine off grid and hybrid options exist where a grid connection is poor or costly.
  • Off oil transition. Many rural homes are off the gas grid on oil. As they move toward electric heating and EVs, self generated power becomes more useful, with the honest winter caveat still in place.

Do solar panels actually work in Aberdeenshire?

Do I need a specially accredited solar installer?

It depends on your goal. There is a separate certification scheme whose main purpose is to open access to export tariffs and, historically, to grants. It is not what makes an installation safe. Safe, compliant solar is governed by BS 7671 and carried out by a qualified electrician. We are NICEIC approved and focus on a quality install and on saving you money on the power you use. If being paid to export is your main aim, you will need an installer who holds that scheme, and we will tell you that straight.

Will I get paid for the electricity I export?

There are tariffs that pay for electricity you export to the grid, but the rate is only a few pence per unit, and joining one requires the separate certification scheme mentioned above, which we do not hold. Our systems are designed to save you money on the electricity you use yourself, which in Scotland is worth several times more than exporting it. We would rather cut your import bill than chase a small export cheque.

Is a battery worth it in Aberdeenshire?

For most homes here, yes. A battery stores the daytime surplus for evening and overnight use, which is what turns solar from a modest saving into a worthwhile one at this latitude. It can also provide power cut backup, which is genuinely valuable on exposed rural supplies. We size the battery to your real usage rather than overselling it.

Are there grants for solar in Scotland right now?

Honestly, there is no meaningful grant for standard domestic solar PV or battery storage in Scotland at present. The Home Energy Scotland solar loan closed in 2024. Zero percent VAT currently applies to domestic solar and battery installation. Be wary of anyone still promising large solar grants, and we will never claim to unlock one for you.

Can solar run my heat pump or whole house through winter?

No, and we will not pretend it can. Generation is at its lowest in December and January, exactly when heating demand peaks, so solar will not run electric heating or a heat pump through a Scottish winter. What solar and a battery do is cut your bills across the year and cover a large part of your everyday use, especially from spring to autumn.

What is different about a rural or farm solar install?

Quite a lot. Rural Aberdeenshire often has TT earthing and overhead supplies, larger roofs and outbuildings, three phase supplies on farms, and weak or off grid situations. Adding solar to that safely is electrician work, from the earthing and bonding to the protection and the grid notification. Can I charge my EV from my solar panels?

Yes, with the right integration. Surplus generation can divert to your EV charger so the car soaks up excess power rather than exporting it.
