- 4kWp solar with a myenergi Zappi EV charger: £9,500 to £11,500
- 4kWp solar, 10kWh battery and a Zappi: £12,500 to £15,500
- 5kWp solar, 10kWh battery and a Zappi: £14,000 to £17,000
- Commercial and farm roofs, 15 to 50kWp: from £14,000, priced by survey
What changes the price on a Peterhead job: scaffold on a terrace with no side access, a slate roof rather than concrete tile, rafters that need strengthening, how far the array is from your fuse board, and whether that board has room for a new circuit. If it does not, we include a consumer unit upgrade in Peterhead in the same written quote, so there are no surprises on installation day.
0% VAT applied automatically on qualifying residential solar and battery installs until at least March 2027.
How Peterhead prices compare with solar costs across Scotland
What is the average cost to install solar panels in Scotland?
Home Energy Scotland says the average solar array installed in Scotland is around 4kWp and costs around £6,500, and that difficult roof access can add to that. Its solar panels page, checked on 6 October 2026, gives a wider range of £1,500 to £10,000 depending on size. Our £7,000 to £8,500 for 3 to 4kWp in Peterhead is a fully installed figure with scaffold, grid paperwork and both certificates already in it.
What is the average price to have solar panels fitted?
For a typical house the fitting is not a separate bill: scaffold, labour, wiring, testing and certification sit inside one installed price, which with us runs from £7,000 for a 3 to 4kWp system to £15,000 for 6kWp or more with a large battery. Ask any installer for a single written figure that includes all of those, because a low panel price with scaffold and certificates added later is not a like for like comparison.
Six steps from your first call to export payments
- 1
Roof survey, free
We look at the roof covering, pitch, direction and shading, go into the loft to see the rafters, and check the meter and fuse board.
- 2
Written design and price
Panel layout, inverter, any battery and the mounting system, with expected yearly generation and one fixed price, usually within one working day.
- 3
SSEN paperwork
Up to 3.68kW per phase is notified to SSEN under G98 after commissioning. Bigger systems, and many with a battery, need G99 approval before switch on. We handle both.
- 4
Fitting day
One to two days on site for most homes, two to three with a battery. Scaffold goes up before we start and comes down when the roof work is signed off.
- 5
Testing and certificates
Tested to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026. You receive the electrical installation certificate, and Q-Smart issues the MCS certificate.
- 6
Monitoring and SEG
We set up the monitoring app on your phone and hand over the documents your supplier asks for when you apply for a Smart Export Guarantee tariff.
What a solar array on a Peterhead roof generates and earns
Yes, for most Peterhead houses with a roof facing south, east or west, but the payback is long and the summer months do most of the work. These are the figures we quote against.
Four fifths of a Peterhead array's output arrives from March to September
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS model for our Thomson Road base on 6 October 2026. A 4kWp array facing due south at a 35 degree pitch comes out at about 3,500 kWh a year, ranging from 486 kWh in May to 75 kWh in December, with 81% of the total between March and September.
We quote the same array at 2,600 kWh a year, a deliberate margin under the model for chimney shade, neighbouring gables, salt film on the glass and wet, grey weeks. An east facing roof in the same model makes about a quarter less over the year, so roof direction matters as much as panel count. If you want the wider Scottish picture first, read do solar panels work in Scotland.
| 4kWp array | Generated | Used at home at 24p | Exported at 14.5p | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South facing | 2,600 kWh | 1,000 kWh, £240 | 1,600 kWh, £232 | £472 |
| East and west split | 2,250 kWh | 1,150 kWh, £276 | 1,100 kWh, £159.50 | £436 |
The honest payback. At £472 a year, a system in our £7,000 to £8,500 band pays for itself in roughly 15 to 18 years at today's prices, inside the 25 year panel warranty. A unit you use is worth 24p and a unit you export about 14.5p, so a 10kWh battery that shifts 1,000 kWh of summer surplus into the evening adds about £76 a year from solar alone; its bigger value is charging cheaply overnight in winter, which our page on battery storage in Peterhead sets out. Rates from major Scottish suppliers in 2026 range from approximately 5p to 15p per kWh, with leading tariffs such as Octopus Outgoing currently paying around 14.5p.
Send us a photo of your roof and your fuse board
With your postcode and two photos we can usually tell you which size suits your house and roughly what it costs before we visit. The survey then confirms it, at no charge.
Fitting solar panels to Peterhead's exposed coastal roofs
On a coastal roof the mounting system matters as much as the panels. Peterhead faces the open North Sea, so we design the fixings around wind and salt before we choose a single panel.
- Wind lifts, it does not just press. Air moving over a pitched roof pulls upward, hardest at the edges, corners and ridge. We keep panels back from those zones and space the roof hooks and rails for the exposure rather than using a default layout.
- The rafters carry the load. An array adds weight and wind load to timbers that may be a century old or have been reroofed without records. We look in the loft at the survey, and if the structure needs strengthening we tell you before you commit, because that changes the price and the building warrant position.
- Salt attacks metal, not glass. Panel glass and frames cope with sea air; the brackets, clamps and bolts underneath are what corrode. The written quote names the mounting system and fixings we will use, so you can compare it line by line.
- Slate takes longer. A slate roof is slower and more delicate to work on than concrete tile, which is one reason slate roofs sit higher in our price range.

Solar panels, inverters and batteries for Peterhead homes
Panels: tier 1 monocrystalline panels with a 25 year performance warranty. We choose the module on availability and value at the time of your quote rather than tying you to one maker.
Hybrid inverters and batteries: SolaX and Fox ESS are our usual choice on an unshaded roof where a battery is in the plan now or later. SolaX Triple Power batteries are lithium iron phosphate, built in 5.8kWh modules up to roughly 23kWh, with a 10 year warranty and SolaX Cloud monitoring.
Shaded roofs: SolarEdge, with an optimiser behind each panel, where a chimney stack, dormer or neighbouring gable shades part of the array. A shaded panel then costs you its own output only, and the app shows every panel separately.
Electric car: a solar diverting charger such as the myenergi Zappi sends daytime surplus into the car rather than the grid. We fit it with the panels as a bundle, or on its own through our EV charger installation in Peterhead.
Do you need permission for solar panels in Peterhead?
Usually not on a house. Roof solar on a Peterhead home is normally permitted development under the Scottish rules, and Aberdeenshire Council, not Aberdeen City Council, is the planning and building standards authority for the town.
Houses: Class 6HA
Panels on a dwelling are permitted development if no part sticks out more than 1 metre from the roof plane, wall, ridge or chimney. In a conservation area they must go on the rear elevation, or a side elevation that does not face a road. Listed buildings and their grounds are excluded and need consent first.
Garages and outbuildings: Class 6HB
Panels on a garage or shed in your garden have a tighter limit of 500mm, and the building must not be in the front garden. Freestanding ground panels fall under a separate class, so we check which applies before quoting.
Building warrant
A house of up to two storeys does not normally need a warrant for roof panels when the existing roof carries them without strengthening. If strengthening is needed, or the property is a flat or maisonette, plan on a warrant from Aberdeenshire Council. The owner is responsible for obtaining it, and we tell you which applies at the survey.
Grid connection through SSEN
SSEN runs the local network. A system up to 3.68kW per phase is notified under G98 once it is commissioned; anything larger, which includes most battery systems, needs G99 approval before it is switched on. That application is part of our price, and it is often the longest wait in the whole job.
Part P and Building Control are English rules
Part P belongs to the Building Regulations for England and Wales, and Scotland has no Building Control notification. Here the rules are Building Standards and, where needed, a warrant. A quote for a Peterhead roof that mentions Part P was written for somewhere else. For towns further inland, see our solar panel installation in Aberdeenshire page.

Can you really get free solar panels in Scotland?
Not as a typical homeowner: in October 2026 no Scottish scheme gives a household that pays its own way free solar PV panels. The support that does exist is narrow, and it is worth knowing exactly what it covers before you answer an advert.
Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan
The funding table on the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan page has no line for standard solar PV or batteries. It offers an interest free loan of up to £5,000, with no grant, for hybrid PV and water heating panels (PV T) or solar thermal, through an MCS installer.
Warmer Homes Scotland
Warmer Homes Scotland helps households struggling to heat their homes, typically where someone receives a qualifying benefit. A Warmworks assessor decides the measures, which can include a home renewables system, and Warmworks approved installers fit them. Home Energy Scotland checks eligibility on 0808 808 2282.
ECO4
The Energy Company Obligation places a duty on medium and large energy suppliers to fund measures for low income, fuel poor and vulnerable households. Ofgem's ECO page says ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026. It is not open to every homeowner who asks.
Treat "free solar panels" adverts with care. If someone offers free panels or a Scottish solar grant, ask for the scheme's name and its official page, and check it with Home Energy Scotland before you sign or share personal details. For a household that pays for its own system, the real help is 0% VAT until at least March 2027 and Smart Export Guarantee income, and we build both into every Peterhead quote.
What is the 20% rule for solar panels?
The 20% rule is a rule of thumb, not a regulation: it does not appear in BS 7671, in the Scottish permitted development rules or in SSEN's connection rules. You will see it used loosely in sales material, sometimes as a sizing margin and sometimes as a savings estimate, and the meaning changes with the seller. We size a system from your roof, its shading and your own meter readings, and we show you the arithmetic.
Why are people getting rid of their solar panels?
Most panels come off roofs for reasons unrelated to whether solar works: the roof needed replacing, the savings had been oversold, a leak started at a poor fixing, or the inverter failed and the installer had disappeared. We check the roof before we quote, quote output below the model, fix to the rafters, and we are a registered Scottish company, SC821028, based in Peterhead to look after what we fit.
Peterhead solar installers with certificates you can open
MCS through our Q-Smart partnership
Every installation we complete is fully MCS registered through our Q-Smart partnership. Q-Smart is a Competent Person Scheme. Faithful Spark Electricians carries out the installation and Q-Smart issues the MCS certificate, so your system qualifies for the Smart Export Guarantee.
That matters because a supplier will only pay Smart Export Guarantee rates on an installation certified under MCS or Flexi Orb. Our guide Smart Export Guarantee explained compares the supplier tariffs.

How much do solar panels cost in Peterhead?
We install 3 to 4kWp of solar in Peterhead for £7,000 to £8,500, 4kWp with a 10kWh battery for £10,000 to £12,000, and 6kWp or more with at least 10kWh of storage for £12,000 to £15,000. All prices are fully installed at 0% VAT, with scaffold, the SSEN paperwork and both certificates included.
Do solar panels work in Peterhead?
Yes. The PVGIS model gives about 3,500 kWh a year for a south facing 4kWp array in Peterhead, and we quote 2,600 kWh to allow for shade and weather. That is worth about £472 a year at 24p per kWh used and 14.5p per kWh exported. Around 81% of the output comes between March and September.
Can you really get free solar panels in Scotland?
Not as a typical homeowner. The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan has no funding line for standard solar PV, and Warmer Homes Scotland and ECO4 are for eligible low income or fuel poor households, with measures chosen by the scheme. Check any "free solar" offer with Home Energy Scotland before signing.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Peterhead?
Not on most houses. Scottish permitted development allows roof panels that protrude no more than 1 metre. In a conservation area they must avoid the principal elevation and any side facing a road, and a listed building needs consent from Aberdeenshire Council.
Will sea wind and salt damage solar panels in Peterhead?
The panel glass and frames cope well with sea air. The risk is in the mounting: wind lifts panels near roof edges, and salt corrodes brackets and bolts. We keep panels out of the edge zones, space the fixings for the exposure and name the mounting system on the quote.
How long does solar panel installation take?
One to two days on site for most homes, or two to three with a battery. Systems above 3.68kW per phase need SSEN approval under G99 before switch on, which we apply for once you accept the quote.
Can I add a battery to my solar panels later?
Yes. Adding a 5 to 10kWh battery to an existing system costs £3,500 to £5,000. If a battery is likely, we can fit a battery ready hybrid inverter at the start so the upgrade is straightforward.
Will I get paid for the electricity I export?
Yes, through the Smart Export Guarantee, provided the installation is certified under MCS or Flexi Orb. Every system we install is MCS registered through our Q-Smart partnership. Leading tariffs such as Octopus Outgoing currently pay around 14.5p per kWh.
