Why Peterhead Is Different

A lot of roofs here are not solar roofs. A battery does not care.

Granite terraces near the harbour with chimney stacks throwing shade across half the slope. North facing pitches. Upper flats where the roof is not yours to fit anything to. Conservation area frontages. Every one of those rules a household out of solar, and every one of them used to rule the household out of storage as well, because a battery was treated as an accessory to panels rather than a thing in its own right.

That is no longer how it works. A battery does not care which way your house points, whether the sun is out, or whether you own the roof at all. It only cares what time of day you use electricity. Charge it overnight when a unit costs roughly 8p, run the house on it through the day instead of paying roughly 30p, and the saving arrives whether the weather cooperates or not.

Which is why this page is built around the three things that actually decide whether storage is right for your house: the tariff maths and its two catches, what happens on the night the network goes down, and where in a Peterhead house a battery is allowed to go. If a battery is wrong for you, we would far rather say so at survey than fit one that never cycles.

The date a battery stopped needing a solar system to make sense.

Before then, a home battery only got the zero rate if it went in at the same time as solar panels or another qualifying energy saving measure. Fitted on its own it was standard rated, and that 20% was usually enough to kill the idea. HMRC then extended the zero rate to cover standalone battery storage: a battery with no panels at all, retrofitted to an existing home, charging from cheap overnight grid electricity. It also covers a battery added to an array that went up years ago, and a battery installed alongside new panels as before. Hardware and labour, treated as a single supply.

That relief runs until 31 March 2027, and reverts to 5% on 1 April 2027. There is no VAT to add to any battery price on this page.

Where The Money Comes From

Buy it at 8p, use it at 30p.

A battery pays you in three separate ways, and only two of them are money. Most pages blur them into one payback figure. They behave completely differently, they apply to different households, and you should know which ones apply to yours before you spend anything.

Way one

Shifting your tariff

Charge overnight at roughly 8p a unit. Run the house on it through the day instead of paying roughly 30p. This works with no solar panels whatsoever, and it is the pillar this page is really about.

Applies to: anyone who can get onto a time of use tariff. Read the two catches below before you assume that is you.

Way two

Keeping your own solar

Without storage, a summer afternoon's surplus goes to the grid for about 14.5p. With storage it stays in the house and saves you about 24p that evening. The battery is not generating anything. It is moving units from the cheap column to the dear one.

Way three

Staying on when the network does not

This one is not money, and we will not pretend it is. It is the difference between a normal evening and a cold dark house. It also does not happen automatically, which is the part almost nobody in this trade tells you before you have paid.

Applies to: anyone on this coast who remembers 2021. There is a whole section on it below.

Worked example: a family home using 3,500 kWh a year, with a 10kWh battery

Time of use tariffs price electricity by the hour. Cheap in the small hours when demand collapses, dear through the day. A battery is simply a device for buying at the first price and using at the second.

Read This Before You Switch Tariff

Two catches nobody puts in the brochure.

The arbitrage argument above is real. It also comes with two conditions that decide whether it works in your house, and neither of them appears on a competitor page.

Catch one

The cheapest overnight tariffs need an electric car.

The headline rates come from tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go, at around 7.5p in an 11:30pm to 5:30am window against a peak averaging about 32p, checked in February 2026. Eligibility is an account with that supplier, a half hourly smart meter, and a compatible electric vehicle or smart charger. A home battery on its own does not qualify you.

The good news, if you do have an EV: during that overnight window the cheap rate applies to the whole house, not just the car. Which is why the households that do best out of storage in Buchan are the ones that already have a charger on the wall. If that is you, you are most of the way there already. Catch two

The daytime rate is higher than a flat tariff.

Roughly 30p to 32p against about 24p on a standard single rate tariff. That is the trade. You get the cheap window by accepting a dearer day. So moving onto one of these tariffs and not shifting enough load leaves you worse off than when you started.

This is where a battery stops being a gadget and becomes the thing that makes the tariff work. It is also why we ask for a year of your actual meter data before recommending a size. Fitting a 15kWh battery to a household that cannot cycle it is a very expensive way to store nothing.

The honest bottom line. At £3,500 to £5,000, a saving of around £333 a year is a ten to fifteen year payback on tariff shifting alone. So no, a battery is not primarily a payback purchase at 2026 prices, and anyone telling you it clears itself in five years is selling rather than advising. What it is: a way to cut a bill by roughly a third, to stack on top of solar if you have it, and to keep the house running when the network cannot. Stack all three and the case is genuinely strong. Rest it on one and it is thin. We will tell you which one you are.

November 2021

A fully charged battery will give you nothing in a power cut. Unless somebody designed it to.

This is the single most misunderstood thing about home storage, and on this coast it is the one that matters most. Storm Arwen is not a distant example. It landed here.

  • 1,000 points of damage recorded by SSEN in the north east. The previous high from a single weather event was 150.
  • The equivalent of almost two years of overhead line faults in one 12 hour period.
  • 135,000 homes in the north of Scotland lost power.
  • More than 2,000 SSEN customers in the north east spent six nights without it. Some homes were off supply for seven days.
  • Around 4,100 properties, mainly Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, Angus and Moray, were still waiting to be reconnected at one point in the recovery.
  • 134 military personnel were deployed into Aberdeenshire alongside more than 500 SSEN engineers and support staff.

Nobody can promise you that will not happen again, and we are not going to sell resilience as an investment return. But if you live on this coast and you have decided a battery is worth having anyway, then whether it works during an outage is a decision worth making deliberately rather than discovering later.

Why a battery shuts down

G99, the engineering standard that governs how your system connects to the network, requires a grid tied inverter to disconnect the moment the mains disappears. That is not a fault or a manufacturer's shortcut. It exists so that your battery cannot push electricity into a dead line while SSEN engineers are working on it. So the default behaviour of a home battery in an outage is to switch itself off, however full it is. Ask any installer quoting you what happens to your system in a power cut. If the answer is vague, they have not specified one.

What changes it: an EPS output

An EPS, an Emergency Power Supply output, with a relay that physically isolates part of your house from the grid and lets the inverter create its own supply inside that island. Changeover is typically 10 to 20 seconds, so you do notice it happen. An EPS output is limited, usually in the region of 3 to 5kW: lighting, the fridge and freezer, the router, phone charging, the boiler controls. Not the shower and not the oven.

Backing up the whole house is a different and larger job, needing more storage and a more involved installation. Both are chargeable options rather than something included by default, and both are priced after the survey once we know which circuits you actually want to keep alive. What we will not do is let you assume you have backup when you have not bought it.

Who Is Doing The Work

The qualification for this specific job, and the certificate to go with it.

Storage is its own discipline. There is a separate Level 3 award for it, and it is the one that matters on this page rather than a general electrical ticket.

Read the first line of that list again, because it is the whole reason this page talks about PAS 63100 and enclosure limits rather than payback slogans. Design, installation and commissioning of small electrical energy storage systems is a distinct award, and it is the correct one for the work.

On a battery only installation there is nothing being exported, so SEG is not the point. It becomes the point the day you add panels, and it is worth having the paperwork done properly from the start rather than retrofitting a certificate later.

Siting, Standards & Scottish Rules

A battery is not a cupboard appliance. There are real rules about siting it.

This is the part of the job the qualification is actually for, and the part every thin local page skips entirely. Ask about it. The answer tells you a great deal about who you are dealing with.

The fire specification

PAS 63100:2024

Published on 19 March 2024, developed by BSI and sponsored by the UK government. Its full title is "Electrical installations. Protection against fire of battery energy storage systems for use in dwellings. Specification". It is not a British Standard and it is not law, but it is the reference point everyone competent now works to.

Its location rules are the practical bit. A battery should not go in a room intended for sleeping. It should not go on a means of escape that is not a protected escape route, which rules out most landings, staircases and hallways in an ordinary house. And it sets specific provisions for loft spaces, which is exactly where a lot of people assume it will end up.

The capacity limit

PAS 63100 clause 6.1.3 caps stored energy at 20kWh per enclosure. It is a number worth knowing before anyone sketches you a wall full of modules, because it is the point at which a bigger system becomes a different installation rather than simply more of the same one.

The installation code

The IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems

Now in its 3rd Edition, covering design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of an EESS. It requires installation in accordance with BS 7671, and sets standards specific to the battery chemistry in front of you.

There is a chain here worth knowing. The MCS installation standard for storage points at the IET Code of Practice, and the Code of Practice recommends PAS 63100 be considered. So the certification route and the fire guidance are joined up, and an installer working properly to one is working to all of it.

Grid approval

G99 through SSEN, before anything is energised

Your distribution network operator here is SSEN. Battery storage almost always sits above the 3.68kW per phase threshold that would allow the simpler G98 notification, so a G99 application has to be approved before the system is switched on. Not notified afterwards. Approved first.

We make the application as part of the job. It is worth asking anyone else quoting you who submits it and at what stage, because a system energised without approval is a problem that surfaces later, usually when somebody tries to register it or sell the house.

Wiring regulations

BS 7671, and specifically Amendment 4

The installation is designed, tested and certified to BS 7671, the 18th Edition wiring regulations. The current amendment is A4:2026, published on 15 April 2026 and mandatory for all new work from 15 October 2026.

This is not general trade detail on a battery page, it is directly on point. A4 brings in updated requirements for stationary secondary batteries, which is the formal name for the thing on your wall. And A3:2024 had already added Regulation 530.3.201 on selecting devices for bidirectional current flow, which is precisely what a battery creates in a house originally wired to take electricity in one direction only. An installer still quoting A2:2022 as the current standard is two amendments behind on the one topic where it matters most. More on Amendment 4.

Warrants and planning

Aberdeenshire, not Aberdeen City

Fitting a battery inside an existing house is electrical work rather than a structural alteration, so a building warrant is not normally in play, and there is no planning application for a unit on a garage wall. Where it can come up is if the installation involves building work, a new outbuilding to house it, or a property type outside the domestic exemptions. Peterhead is Aberdeenshire Council, not Aberdeen City, and building standards and planning both sit with Aberdeenshire.

What never goes away, warrant or no warrant, is BS 7671. The installation is tested and certified either way, and you get the certificate.

So where does it usually end up in a Peterhead house?

In practice: an attached garage, a utility room, a plant cupboard, a porch, or an outbuilding, on a wall with room around it, away from sleeping rooms and away from the way out of the house. Ventilation, ambient temperature and access for maintenance all matter, and so does how far it sits from your consumer unit, because that drives the cable run.

On the older harbour properties this is genuinely the constraining question, more than price. A tight terrace with no garage and a single staircase does not always have an obvious compliant location, and it is far better to establish that at survey than after a deposit. If your house does not have a sensible spot, we will say so.

What does not apply here at all

National guides and templated location pages routinely tell Scottish homeowners about Part P and about notifying Building Control. Neither exists in Scotland. Part P is a section of the Building Regulations for England and Wales. Scotland has Building Standards, administered by the local council, and the mechanism is a building warrant rather than a notification. There is no Building Control body to notify here.

It is a small thing that tells you something larger. A page that has not worked out which country's regulations apply has probably not worked out much else either.

The Kit & The Job

Four names, and what happens between your first call and a battery that is cycling.

We install SolarEdge, Fox ESS, Alpha ESS and SolaX. All lithium iron phosphate, all with proper UK support behind them, and the choice between them comes out of your house rather than out of whatever we happen to have in the van.

Chemistry, and why we only fit LFP

Every battery we install uses lithium iron phosphate cells, usually shortened to LFP. It is the chemistry the domestic storage industry has converged on for one reason: thermal stability. LFP is markedly more tolerant of abuse and heat than the nickel based chemistries used in phones and many cars, and it holds up over far more cycles.

It is also why the warranties are long. Fox ESS typically warrants 10 years on its EQ and EP ranges and 12 on the newer CQ6, with round trip efficiency in the 95% to 98% region. SolaX Triple Power is LFP in 5.8kWh modules stacking to around 23kWh with a 10 year warranty and SolaX Cloud monitoring. Alpha ESS is LFP as well.

AC coupled or DC coupled

If you already have solar with a working inverter, an AC coupled battery bolts on alongside it without touching the array. If you are fitting both together, or your existing inverter is due for replacement anyway, a DC coupled hybrid inverter is more efficient because it avoids a conversion step. That is the first fork in the road at survey and it changes which brand makes sense.

Modularity and monitoring

SolaX Triple Power builds in 5.8kWh blocks. Fox ESS builds in 3.96kWh blocks. That granularity matters when your meter data says you need eleven kilowatt hours rather than ten or fifteen, and it matters again if you want to add capacity in a couple of years without replacing the lot.

Every system we fit reports to an app so you can see what it charged, what it discharged and what it saved. We set it up with you at handover and show you what a normal day looks like, so an abnormal one is obvious.

Start to finish, usually three to six weeks

Most of that is the G99 approval and equipment lead time rather than anyone being in your house.

  1. A conversation

    What you spend, who is home during the day, whether there is an EV, and whether you already have panels. That is usually enough to say whether storage is worth surveying.

  2. Your meter data

    We ask for a year of half hourly consumption from your supplier. It is the difference between sizing a battery and guessing at one, and it is free to get.

  3. Free site survey

    Where the unit can compliantly go, ventilation and ambient temperature, cable route to the board, whether the consumer unit can take the circuit, and whether an EPS output is practical for the circuits you care about.

  4. Written design and fixed price

    Capacity, brand, AC or DC coupled, location, what the EPS covers if you want one, and the modelled saving against your own consumption. In writing, no pressure to sign on the day.

  5. G99 application to SSEN

    Submitted and approved before installation is booked. We handle it and keep you posted on where it is.

  6. Installation and commissioning

    Usually one day for a straightforward retrofit, longer where the board needs replacing or an EPS is being wired. Short isolation while we connect and test, and we tell you when.

  7. Certification and handover

    Full testing and certification to BS 7671, the MCS certificate issued by Q-Smart under our partnership, monitoring app set up, charge windows configured to your tariff, and a walk through of what good looks like.

The 10kWh standalone retrofit is the most popular option here. It is enough to shift most of a family home's daytime demand into the overnight window. A 15kWh unit suits higher consumption households, heat pumps, or homes wanting more circuits covered during an outage, and is only worth it if you can genuinely cycle it.

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes, and since 1 February 2024 it is zero rated for VAT in its own right. A standalone battery charges from cheap overnight grid electricity and runs your house through the expensive part of the day. It works on a shaded roof, a north facing roof, an upper flat, or a house where the roof is not yours to touch. What it needs is not sunshine, it is a time of use tariff and a household that uses enough electricity during the day to make shifting it worthwhile.

Will my battery keep the lights on in a power cut?

Not unless it has been specified to. G99 requires a grid tied inverter to disconnect the instant the mains is lost, so that your system cannot energise a line SSEN engineers are working on. The default behaviour is to shut down, however full the battery is. To get power during an outage you need an EPS, an Emergency Power Supply output with a relay that isolates part of the house and lets the inverter run it as an island. Changeover takes about 10 to 20 seconds and an EPS output is typically 3 to 5kW, so lighting, fridge, freezer, router and boiler controls rather than the shower. It is a chargeable option, quoted at survey.

How much will a battery save me each year?

On tariff shifting alone, a family home using 3,500 kWh a year with a 10kWh battery on a time of use tariff at 8p overnight and 30p daytime pays roughly £507 a year, against roughly £840 on a standard flat 24p tariff. That is about £333. At £3,500 to £5,000 fitted, that is a ten to fifteen year payback on tariff shifting by itself, so we would not sell you a battery purely as an investment. Add solar self consumption on top, and the resilience during an outage, and the case gets much stronger. We model it against your real consumption at survey rather than quoting a generic figure.

Do I need an electric car to benefit?

No, but it helps more than most people expect. The cheapest overnight tariffs, such as Intelligent Octopus Go at around 7.5p between 11:30pm and 5:30am, require a compatible electric vehicle or smart charger to qualify. A home battery on its own does not get you onto them. If you do have an EV, the cheap rate during that overnight window applies to the whole house rather than just the car, which is why households with a charger already fitted get the most out of storage. Other time of use tariffs exist without an EV requirement, with a smaller spread between the cheap and expensive rates.

Where in the house can a battery actually go?

A 10kWh battery fitted, whether standalone or retrofitted to existing solar, is £3,500 to £5,000. A 15kWh unit is £5,000 to £7,000. A 4kWp solar array with a 10kWh battery installed together is £10,000 to £12,000. All of these are zero rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate becomes 5%. An EPS backup output and whole home backup are chargeable options priced after the survey, and a consumer unit upgrade, where the existing board cannot take the new circuit, starts at £550 + VAT.

How long does a battery last, and what happens at the end?

Warranties on the units we fit run 10 to 12 years, and they are written as a retained capacity figure rather than a simple on or off. A battery does not stop at the end of its warranty, it holds less than it did when new. LFP chemistry degrades slowly, which is a large part of why it is the chemistry we fit. The inverter is generally the component with the shorter service life, and on a DC coupled hybrid system it is the part most likely to be replaced first.

Does Part P apply in Scotland?

No. Part P is a section of the Building Regulations for England and Wales. Scotland has Building Standards, administered by the local council, and the mechanism is a building warrant rather than a notification. There is no Building Control body to notify here.
