EV Charger Peterhead Scenarios

From new build estates to harbour town terraces, we know the supply.

Eight common Peterhead situations our customers ask us about. Click any scenario for the full detail.

Peterhead Property Knowledge

Harbour terraces. New build estates. Rural farmhouses. We fit them all.

Peterhead has more housing variety than its size suggests. The right charger and the right install change based on what you actually live in.

Harbour Terraces

Queen Street, Marischal Street, James Street. Built late Victorian, no off street parking. Cross pavement cable channels with council permit, or lockable cable arms where suitable.

Inter War Semis

Mid 20th century semi detached homes around Prince Street, Balmoor Terrace. Driveway present, fuse board often needs a Type A RCBO added. Mid range Zappi or Ohme Pro typical.

New Build Estates

Catto Park, Inverugie, Bay View. Modern RCBO consumer units, often pre wired for EV and solar. Fastest installs we do in AB42, typically half a day.

Commercial & Port

Smith Quay, Peterhead Port, Inverugie industrial estate. Three phase supplies common, 22kW chargers viable, fleet and workplace installs with WCS grant funding.

Peterhead · Zappi install
★★★★★

"Steven arrived on the day promised, fitted the Zappi neatly, sorted the cable run through the garage wall properly, and set up the app before he left. The whole job took half a day and he walked us through how solar surplus would work once we add panels later. Faultless service."

What an EV Charger Install Involves

Electric vehicle chargepoint installation explained in plain English.

A home EV charger is a dedicated electrical installation that delivers between 3.6kW and 22kW directly to your vehicle through a hard wired chargepoint. Almost all UK home installs are 7.4kW on a single phase supply, since that is the maximum a typical Peterhead domestic supply can deliver without an upgrade. Faster 11kW and 22kW units require a three phase supply, which is much more common in commercial premises and newer rural properties around Mintlaw and Longside.

The chargepoint connects to your consumer unit through a dedicated circuit protected by either a Type A or Type B RCD, depending on the unit you choose. The cable run between the consumer unit and the charger is usually 5 to 15 metres for a standard Peterhead install. Longer runs are possible and cost a little more for additional cable and labour. The charger itself sits in a weatherproof IP54 or higher rated enclosure on an external wall, typically by the driveway.

An EV charger install is not a simple plug in job. It is a dedicated electrical installation under BS 7671 (18th Edition), and it must be notified to the DNO (SSEN in the Peterhead area) before commissioning. The wrong unit, the wrong RCD type, or a missed notification creates a real safety risk and can invalidate your home insurance.

Home, Single Car

The standard Peterhead driveway install.

The vast majority of EV charger installs we carry out in Peterhead are single car home installs on a driveway. The customer drives a Volkswagen ID, Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, or one of the many other modern EVs now on the road across AB42. The typical install is a 7.4kW smart charger on a single phase supply, with a 10 to 12 metre cable run from the consumer unit through the garage wall or along the external wall to a weatherproof IP54 enclosure.

Most Peterhead homes built after 2008 already have a consumer unit that can take an additional 32 amp RCBO without an upgrade. Properties from the 1970s through 1990s often need a single RCBO added, which we include in the standard quote. Properties with a BS 3036 rewireable fuse board or a split load board lacking RCD coverage will need a full board upgrade at £550 to £950 + VAT, quoted separately and only after the customer agrees the price.

Typical brand choices in Peterhead: Zappi for solar surplus integration (popular in Boddam and Burnhaven where space allows for future solar), Hypervolt Pro 3 for premium tethered installs, Ohme Home Pro for households on Octopus Intelligent tariff, Tesla Wall Connector for Tesla drivers, TeltoCharge as the value pick. We install every major UK approved unit and recommend the right one for your driveway, your car, and your tariff.

No Off Street Parking

EV charging for Peterhead's harbour terraces and central streets.

A genuine challenge for several streets near the harbour and town centre. Queen Street, Marischal Street, James Street, Drummers Corner, and the older terraces around the Buchanhaven side share the same issue: residents park on the street, not on a private driveway. Charging from a wall mounted unit means the cable has to cross a public pavement, which is governed by Aberdeenshire Council's pavement permit process.

Three workable solutions exist for this kind of property:

  • Cross pavement cable channel. A recessed channel, typically 600mm long, set flush in the pavement so cables sit safely below ground level. Aberdeenshire Council permit required. Costs around £1,200 to £1,800 + VAT including the channel.
  • Lockable cable management arms. Wall mounted arms that swing the cable up and over a parked car. Cheaper to install, suitable for some terraced streets where the council does not permit channels.
  • Public on street network. Aberdeenshire Council and ChargePlace Scotland operate public chargers around Peterhead, including the Catto Drive car park and the Buchanhaven seafront. Useful as backup but not a permanent solution.

The first step is always a photo or onsite survey to understand your specific street, parking, and frontage. We have completed cross pavement installs in central Peterhead and can advise on the council permit process and timeline.

Workplace & Fleet

Workplace Charging Scheme installs for Peterhead businesses.

Peterhead has a clear business case for workplace EV charging. The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) gives eligible employers up to £350 per socket toward installation, capped at 40 sockets per business. Many premises across Smith Quay, the port area, the Inverugie industrial estate, and the Hatton business park qualify, particularly fishing, oil and gas service, and food processing operations with day staff and fleet vehicles.

The technical requirements step up sharply for commercial installs. Typical scope:

  • Three phase supply. Required for any unit over 7.4kW. Often present in Peterhead commercial premises, especially port and industrial properties. May need SSEN connection upgrade if not.
  • Dynamic load balancing. Software that throttles each charger so the total never exceeds your supply capacity. Critical when multiple cars charge simultaneously during the working day.
  • RFID or app authentication. Prevents unauthorised use, tracks who charged what for billing, HMRC reporting, or fleet allowance.
  • OCPP back office. Open Charge Point Protocol for billing, reporting, and access control. Critical for any business charging staff, customers, or fleet drivers.
  • WCS voucher submission. Eligible businesses apply directly via gov.uk under the Workplace Charging Scheme.

Pricing for a small commercial install (2 to 4 chargepoints) typically falls between £4,500 to £6,500 + VAT before the WCS grant. Larger fleet depot installs are quoted on site survey. Peterhead Port specifically has interesting load balancing challenges with cold store cooling cycles, which we have designed around for previous customers.

Rural AB42 Properties

Rural EV charging across Cruden Bay, Hatton, Longside, Mintlaw.

Rural AB42 brings a different set of considerations. Older rural Aberdeenshire farmhouses often have overhead supplies, longer service cable runs from the main fuse, and sometimes a three phase supply already present (especially on working farms or properties with old workshop loads). The opportunities are bigger, but so are the design considerations.

  • Three phase availability. Many rural Mintlaw, Longside, and Old Deer farmhouses still have three phase supplies from agricultural use. This unlocks 22kW EV charging, which charges most EVs from low to full in under 3 hours.
  • Overhead supply terminations. Some properties have overhead SSEN supplies that drop to a service head on a barn or outbuilding. These can need termination work before EV charging is added safely.
  • Longer cable runs. Driveways at rural properties are often 30 to 50 metres long. We quote separately for cable runs above 15 metres, typically adding £75 to £150 + VAT for each additional 10 metres.
  • Backup power. Many rural AB42 customers also have batteries (Tesla Powerwall 3, SolaX) or generators. The EV install needs to integrate cleanly with these to avoid issues during grid outages.

For rural installs we strongly recommend a site visit rather than a photo survey, because the supply termination is often the biggest unknown. We are based in Peterhead, so travel to Mintlaw, Cruden Bay, or Hatton is short and free of additional travel charge.

Solar + EV Charger

Pairing Peterhead solar with a Zappi.

Peterhead's coastal climate is not as sunny as the south of England, but it is comfortably sunny enough to make solar PV worthwhile, particularly when paired with a Zappi solar surplus diverter charger. The arithmetic shifts dramatically once you have an EV: surplus solar exported to the grid earns 14.5p per kWh on Octopus Outgoing, but the same surplus diverted into your car saves you the avoided import value of 24p per kWh on Octopus tariffs.

The Zappi has three charging modes:

  • Fast. Full grid power, charge at 7.4kW regardless of solar.
  • Eco. Mix of solar and grid, top up from grid only when solar is insufficient.
  • Eco+. Solar surplus only. Charger pauses if the sun goes in, resumes when it comes out.

On a sunny Peterhead Saturday in May, an Eco+ charger can put 18 to 25 kWh of free solar electricity into the EV between 10am and 4pm. Combined with smart overnight charging on Octopus Intelligent (around 7p per kWh), Peterhead drivers regularly cut their annual fuel cost from £1,500+ on petrol to under £150 on electricity.

Faithful Spark designs and installs the whole stack from one contractor: MCS registered solar PV (610/4841/0 qualification), Battery Energy Storage (610/4840/9), and EV charger (610/4640/1). One survey, one quote, one warranty.

OZEV £350 Grant

OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant for Peterhead residents.

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) operates the EV Chargepoint Grant, worth up to £350 toward the cost of a domestic chargepoint installation. The grant has changed several times. The current 2026 rules limit eligibility to specific Peterhead residents, not all homeowners.

You are eligible for the OZEV grant if:

  • You live in a rented residential property (private rental).
  • You own a flat, regardless of whether you live in it or let it.
  • You are a leaseholder in a building of multiple residences.
  • You live in a residential property and have off street parking on a private driveway.
  • You have a fully electric or eligible plug in hybrid vehicle on order, leased, or owned.

You are not eligible if:

  • You own a detached or semi detached house. (Owner occupier exclusion since 2022.)
  • You have previously claimed the grant at the same property.

The grant covers up to 75% of the installation cost, capped at £350. Faithful Spark is an OZEV approved chargepoint installer, so we submit the £350 grant on your behalf and apply it as a discount on your install. Customers can verify our status on the OZEV register at gov.uk.

Why It Has To Be a Qualified Installer

An EV charger is a dedicated electrical installation. Choose accordingly.

The wrong RCD type, the wrong cable size, or the wrong DNO notification can create a fire risk, invalidate your home insurance, and put your manufacturer warranty at risk. EV chargers must be installed under BS 7671 18th Edition by a competent person, with the correct Type A or Type B RCD, the correct circuit protective device, and notification to SSEN (the local Distribution Network Operator covering Peterhead and the wider AB42 area).

NICEIC approval means our work is inspected and certified by the UK's leading electrical safety body. City & Guilds Level 3 EV Charging qualification means Steven has formally trained on the specific safety requirements of vehicle to grid installation.

EV Charger Peterhead FAQs

Common questions about EV charger installation in Peterhead.

Don't see your question? Call 07304 027013 or email us and we will come back the same business day.

How much does an EV charger cost to install in Peterhead?

A standard 7.4kW smart EV charger costs from £900 + VAT installed in Peterhead, with cable run up to 15 metres and a single phase supply. Premium tethered units like the Hypervolt Pro 3 start from £1,295 + VAT. Solar surplus charger (Zappi) from £1,195 + VAT. Eligible Peterhead renters and flat owners save up to £350 through the OZEV grant administered via gov.uk.

How quickly can you get to a Peterhead job?

Faithful Spark is a Peterhead based business, so AB42 jobs get our fastest response. We can usually book a same day survey for a Peterhead address called in before 11am, and most home installs are completed within the same week. Urgent commercial or fleet work prioritised on a case by case basis.

How long does an EV charger install take?

A typical Peterhead home install takes 3 to 4 hours on site. Same day install if your supply is suitable, no consumer unit upgrade is needed, and the cable run is under 15 metres.

Am I eligible for the OZEV £350 grant?

You are eligible if you are a renter, flat owner, or leaseholder in an eligible property with off street parking. Owner occupiers of detached or semi detached houses are no longer eligible since 2022. We confirm eligibility during the free survey and submit the application on your behalf as an OZEV approved chargepoint installer.

Can you install on Peterhead's harbour streets without off street parking?

Yes, with workarounds. Queen Street, Marischal Street, and similar central terraces can use a cross pavement cable channel (Aberdeenshire Council permit required, £1,200 to £1,800 + VAT), a lockable cable management arm, or the public on street charging network at Catto Drive and the Buchanhaven seafront.

Tethered or socketed, which should I choose?

Tethered chargers have the cable permanently attached, which is the most convenient day to day. Socketed chargers let you swap the cable, useful if you have multiple cars. Tethered is the better choice for single car households who charge in the same spot every day. We recommend the right option based on your driveway and how you charge.

Can I pair an EV charger with solar at my Peterhead home?

Yes. The Zappi (myenergi) is the standout charger for solar surplus charging, automatically diverting unused PV energy into your car at the avoided import rate (24p to 27.2p per kWh in 2026) rather than selling it at 14.5p export. Steven holds the City & Guilds Level 3 Solar PV qualification (610/4841/0), so we can design EV and solar end to end.

What about rural Cruden Bay, Hatton, or Mintlaw installs?

Rural AB42 properties often have longer driveways, sometimes overhead supply terminations, and sometimes three phase supplies still in place from agricultural use. We strongly recommend an on site survey rather than a photo survey for these properties. No additional travel charge from Peterhead.

Do I need a fuse board upgrade for an EV charger?

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit with Type A or Type B RCD protection. If your existing consumer unit is in good condition we add a new 32 amp RCBO. Older BS 3036 rewireable fuse boxes or split load boards usually need replacing at £550 to £950 + VAT.

Will my home insurance be affected?

A properly installed EV charger by a qualified installer is recognised by every UK home insurer. We provide a NICEIC Minor Works or Installation Certificate at completion. A non compliant install can invalidate your home insurance, so make sure your installer is NICEIC approved, and signs off with a proper certificate.
