Solar Panel Installation in Ellon from £7,000

We install solar panels on Ellon houses from £7,000 for a 3 to 4kWp array, or £10,000 to £12,000 with a 10kWh battery, fully fitted at 0% VAT. A free survey of your roof comes first, then a fixed written price within one working day of it, and most arrays go up in one to two days. Call 07304 027013.

Faithful Spark Electricians fits solar panels in Ellon at three installed prices: £7,000 to £8,500 for 3 to 4kWp on its own, £10,000 to £12,000 for 4kWp with a 10kWh battery, and £12,000 to £15,000 for 6kWp or more with at least 10kWh of storage. That covers tier 1 monocrystalline panels with a 25 year performance warranty, a Fox ESS, Alpha ESS or SolarEdge inverter, scaffolding, the SSEN connection paperwork, testing, your electrical installation certificate and the MCS certificate Q-Smart issues so you can be paid for exports.

Our own team does the work: Steven Watt leads it, with Callum working alongside him, and Steven holds City and Guilds Level 3 awards in solar PV and battery storage. Ellon households already know us as an electrician in Ellon, so you deal with the same NICEIC registered firm before and after the panels go up. Ring 07304 027013 between 8am and 6pm on weekdays or 9am and 1pm on Saturdays.

What solar panels cost in Ellon, fully installed

Pick the row closest to your house. The survey then fixes one figure for your roof, and nothing on this page has VAT to add.

3 to 4kWp, panels only

£7,000 to £8,500

  • Generates roughly 1,800 to 2,800 kWh a year
  • Best value where someone is home through the day
  • A hybrid inverter keeps a battery open for later
  • Grid notification, certificates and export paperwork included
Most popular

4kWp with a 10kWh battery

£10,000 to £12,000

  • Generates roughly 2,400 to 3,000 kWh a year
  • The usual pick for a house that is empty on weekdays
  • Fox ESS or Alpha ESS hybrid inverter and battery
  • Stores the midday surplus for the evening

6kWp and up, 10kWh and up of storage

£12,000 to £15,000

  • Generates roughly 3,600 to 4,500 kWh a year
  • Larger detached homes, heat pumps, electric cars
  • SSEN approval is applied for before switch on
  • SolarEdge optimisers where gables or trees shade the roof

Battery retrofits, EV bundles and bigger roofs

  • Battery added to panels you already have, 5 to 10kWh: £3,500 to £5,000
  • 4kWp solar plus a myenergi Zappi EV charger: £9,500 to £11,500
  • 4kWp solar, 10kWh battery and a Zappi: £12,500 to £15,500
  • 5kWp solar, 10kWh battery and a Zappi: £14,000 to £17,000
  • Farm, business and commercial roofs, 15 to 50kWp: from £14,000, priced by survey

What moves an Ellon price up or down: how easily scaffold reaches the roof on a tight estate plot or a long farm track, the length of cable from array to fuse board, whether a battery joins the panels, and whether the existing board has space for one more circuit. Where it has not, the written quote includes a consumer unit upgrade in Ellon, so the total you sign is the total you pay.

0% VAT applied automatically on qualifying residential solar and battery installs until at least March 2027.

Is solar worth it if the house is empty all day?

Solar for Ellon homes that are empty on weekdays

Yes, but usually with a battery. Panels make most of their power around midday, so the share you use yourself depends on who is in the house at that time, and that share decides most of the saving.

Shares used at home from the MCS self consumption look up tables (MGD 003), for a household using 3,500 to 3,999 kWh a year and an array generating 2,400 to 2,699 kWh, checked 6 October 2026. Money worked at 24p per kWh used and 14.5p per kWh exported, our standard rates for every solar quote.

Why an empty house exports most of its power

MCS puts a household that is out all day at about a fifth of its own generation used at home, against nearly two fifths for a house with someone in. The rest goes to the grid at 14.5p while the evening is bought back at 24p. Using more electricity overall barely helps; using it while the sun is up does.

What a battery changes, and where it stops

A battery holds the midday surplus for the evening. With 5 to 6kWh usable, the same out all day household keeps 73% of its power; with about 10kWh, 85%. The MCS table flattens above that, which is why our usual Ellon recommendation is the 10kWh tier rather than anything larger. Our page on battery storage in Ellon covers batteries on their own.

Generation and payback in Ellon

How much power solar panels make in Ellon, and the real payback

An Ellon roof facing south, east or west generates enough to be worth fitting, but the honest payback on panels alone is long, and most of the year's output arrives between spring and early autumn.

The model says about 3,580 kWh. We quote 2,600 kWh.

We ran the European Commission's PVGIS tool for Ellon on 6 October 2026. A 4kWp array facing due south at 35 degrees models at 3,581 kWh a year, from 492 kWh in May down to 79 kWh in December, and 81% of it lands between March and September. Facing east, the same array models at 2,757 kWh, about 23% less.

A model assumes a clean, unshaded array with no chimney, dormer, tree or wet week in the way, so our quotes use 2,600 kWh for that south facing roof. We would rather your meter beats our figure than falls short of it. For the national picture, see do solar panels work in Scotland.

Modelled kWh per month for Ellon: 4kWp, due south, 35 degrees, building mounted, 14% system losses. PVGIS v5.3, SARAH3 radiation data 2005 to 2023, at 57.366N 2.073W.

Our payback figure, and why others differ. On 2,600 kWh with someone home in the day, the array returns about £472 a year, so a system in the £7,000 to £8,500 band pays back in roughly 15 to 18 years, inside the 25 year panel warranty. A house that is empty on weekdays earns less from panels alone and takes longer. You will see Ellon estimates of a few hundred pounds more a year and paybacks well under ten years. The difference is nearly always in the assumptions. Put the model's 3,581 kWh into the same sum in place of our 2,600 and the yearly figure rises to about £628, cutting the payback to 11 to 14 years before anything else changes. Add a higher import price, or count the savings from charging a battery overnight on a cheap tariff and using that power at peak time, and it shortens again. That overnight saving is real, but it comes from the battery and the tariff, not from the panels. Ask any installer which generation figure, import price and share used at home sit behind their number.

Estates, older streets and farms

Solar on Ellon's new build estates and rural properties

Most Ellon jobs fall into one of three types of property, and each has its own question to settle at the survey.

  • Newer estate houses. Usually regular, unbroken roof slopes, which keeps the layout simple. If your home came with a few panels already fitted, a battery added to them, at £3,500 to £5,000, is often a better next step than more panels.
  • Older houses nearer the town centre. Pitches, chimneys and roof coverings vary more, and some streets fall inside a conservation area. We check the designation with Aberdeenshire Council before we plan panel positions.
  • Farms, steadings and rural plots. Bigger roofs, outbuildings, longer cable runs and sometimes three phase supplies. Larger rural and commercial arrays are covered on our solar panel installation in Aberdeenshire page.

Whatever the house, we go into the loft at the survey to look at the rafters. If the roof needs strengthening, you hear it before you commit, because it changes the price and the building warrant position.

Panels and an electric car

Charging an electric car from Ellon solar panels

A car only soaks up solar power if it is parked at home while the sun is up. On the days it is, a solar diverting charger such as the myenergi Zappi sends surplus into the car instead of the grid, which can take most of a 4kWp array's midday output.

If the car spends weekdays at work, weekend charging still helps, and a battery covers the rest of the week. We fit the panels and a Zappi together from £9,500, or the charger on its own through our EV charger installation in Ellon service.

Panels and hardware we fit: tier 1 monocrystalline panels with a 25 year performance warranty, chosen on value and availability at the time of your quote. Fox ESS and Alpha ESS hybrid inverters and batteries on most roofs, and SolarEdge with an optimiser on each panel where part of the roof is shaded.

Grants and other questions

Are the government still giving grants for solar panels?

Not for standard solar PV on most Scottish homes. In October 2026 a household paying for its own system gets no grant for ordinary panels; the help that exists is either a loan for a different technology or targeted at households who struggle to heat their homes.

Home Energy Scotland loan

The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan funds solar thermal and hybrid solar PV and water heating panels with an interest free loan of up to £5,000, and shows grant funding as not available for both. Its notes say only PV T systems qualify, so ordinary electricity generating panels are not covered.

Warmer Homes Scotland

The Scottish Government's Warmer Homes Scotland offers support worth £10,000 or more to eligible households. The list of measures includes a home renewables system, but the scheme assesses the home and chooses what is fitted. Home Energy Scotland checks eligibility on 0808 808 2282.

ECO4

The Energy Company Obligation makes larger energy suppliers fund improvements for low income and vulnerable households. Ofgem says ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026. Eligibility is set by the scheme, not by the homeowner.

If a caller or advert promises a free solar grant in Ellon, ask which scheme it is, find that scheme's own page, and ring Home Energy Scotland before you sign anything or hand over details. For everyone else the help that is real is 0% VAT until at least March 2027 and export payments, and both are already built into our Ellon prices.

What is the 20% rule for solar panels?

There is no official 20% rule. Nothing in BS 7671, the Scottish permitted development classes or SSEN's connection process sets a 20% figure for solar. Sellers use the phrase for different things, often a sizing margin or a rough savings promise, so ask anyone who quotes it what they mean. Our sizing comes from your roof, its shading and your own electricity use, with the sums written on the quote.

Why are people getting rid of their solar panels?

Usually for reasons that have little to do with the technology: the roof underneath needed replacing, the savings promised at the door never appeared, a badly sealed fixing let water in, or a failed inverter had nobody to fix it because the installer had gone. Our answers are a loft check before any quote, generation quoted below the model, fixings into the rafters, and a registered Scottish company, SC821028, based in Peterhead and still here to look after what we fit.

Planning, warrants and SSEN

Planning permission and grid approval for solar in Ellon

Most Ellon houses can take roof panels without planning permission. Ellon sits in the Aberdeenshire Council area, so the council in Aberdeenshire, not Aberdeen City Council, handles any planning or building standards question.

Permitted development, Class 6HA

Roof or wall panels on a house are allowed if nothing projects more than 1 metre from the roof plane, wall, ridge or chimney. Inside a conservation area they must sit on the rear, or on a side wall or slope that does not face a road. A listed building, or land within its curtilage, needs consent.

Garages and sheds, Class 6HB

On an outbuilding the projection limit drops to 500mm, and the building cannot stand in the front garden. Ground mounted arrays on farmland fall outside these householder classes, so we confirm the route before pricing.

Building warrant

A house of one or two storeys does not normally need a warrant for roof panels if the existing roof carries them without strengthening. Strengthening work, flats and maisonettes are different, and the owner is responsible for the warrant. We tell you which applies after looking in the loft.

Connecting to the SSEN network

SSEN operates the network around Ellon. Systems up to 3.68kW per phase are notified under G98 after commissioning; larger systems, and most with a battery, need G99 approval before switch on, and the battery counts towards that total. We submit either one as part of the price, and G99 is often the slowest step of the job.

No Part P or Building Control in Scotland

Part P is in the Building Regulations for England and Wales. Scotland has no Building Control notification for this work; it has Building Standards and, where needed, a warrant. If a solar quote for an Ellon roof talks about Part P, it was written for another country.

Ellon solar FAQs

Questions we get about solar panels in Ellon

Not answered here? Call 07304 027013 or message us.

How much do solar panels cost in Ellon?

A 3 to 4kWp array costs £7,000 to £8,500 fully installed, 4kWp with a 10kWh battery costs £10,000 to £12,000, and 6kWp or more with at least 10kWh of storage costs £12,000 to £15,000. Scaffolding, SSEN paperwork and both certificates are included, and 0% VAT applies.

Is solar worth it if nobody is home during the day?

Usually only with a battery. MCS figures put an out all day household at about 21% of its own generation used, worth around £429 a year on our 2,600 kWh basis. A battery with about 10kWh usable raises that to 85% and roughly £587 a year.

Are the government still giving grants for solar panels?

Not for standard solar PV on most homes in Scotland. The Home Energy Scotland loan covers solar thermal and PV T panels only, while Warmer Homes Scotland and ECO4, which runs until 31 December 2026, are for eligible households. 0% VAT and export payments are the help most people get.

Why do solar payback figures for Ellon vary so much?

Because each estimate assumes a different generation figure, import price and share used at home, and some include battery savings from cheap overnight charging. On our 2,600 kWh basis the panels return about £472 a year and pay back in roughly 15 to 18 years.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Ellon?

Not for most houses. Panels are permitted development if they project no more than 1 metre. Conservation areas restrict them to the rear or a side not facing a road, and listed buildings need consent from Aberdeenshire Council.

Can you add a battery to the panels on my new build?

Yes. A 5 to 10kWh battery added to an existing array costs £3,500 to £5,000. We check the existing inverter and the grid connection first, because a battery counts towards the SSEN limit and may need G99 approval.

How long does solar panel installation take in Ellon?

One to two days on site for most homes, two to three with a battery. The SSEN application can take longer than the fitting, so we send it as soon as you accept the quote.

Will I be paid for the electricity my panels export?

Yes, through a Smart Export Guarantee tariff, which needs MCS or Flexi Orb certification. Every system we fit is MCS registered through our Q-Smart partnership, and leading tariffs pay around 14.5p per kWh.
