A new consumer unit in Ellon costs from £550 + VAT with Faithful Spark Electricians, rising to about £950 + VAT where there are a lot of circuits or the job is awkward. Consumer unit, fuse box and fuse board all describe the same thing on your wall, so a fuse box upgrade is the same job. The price covers the board, a protective device for each circuit, testing before and after, and your certificate. Pairing it with a car charger circuit costs £750 to £1,000 + VAT for both.

How much it costs to fit a new consumer unit in Ellon
The board is only part of the bill. Most of the price is the work around it: proving each circuit, landing it on the right device and recording the result. All figures exclude VAT. For a wider look at price by board type, read how much a fuse box upgrade costs.

Why two Ellon quotes differ
- Circuit count. A small flat has only a few circuits. A detached house with a garage, shower and hob has many more.
- Main bonding. Earth clamps on the water and gas pipes that are missing or undersized are the extra we find most often.
- Meter tails. Old, short or perished tails between meter and board get replaced.
- Where the board lives. A garage, a high cupboard or a long way from the meter all add time.
- What testing shows. A circuit that fails is priced on its own and stays off until it is fixed.
Get a fixed price
Take one photo of the board with the lid shut and one with it open, and send them with your Ellon postcode. You get a written price, usually within one working day. It only changes if testing turns up a fault, and you see the reading before anything is added.
Call 07304 027013What the price includes
- The new consumer unit with a protective device on every circuit
- Testing the existing circuits before anything is disconnected
- Every circuit labelled so you know what each switch does
- Full testing once the board is live, with every reading recorded
- Your Electrical Installation Certificate
Priced separately if needed
- Earthing or main bonding corrections
- Replacement meter tails
- Repairs to a circuit that fails its test
- Moving the board to a new position
- Anything SSEN or your energy supplier must do first
An Electrical Installation Certificate covers the new work. An EICR is a separate inspection of the whole installation, so check which document a quote is actually offering.

What an old Ellon fuse box misses
A circuit can fail in five ways. Overload and short circuit are the ones every board handles. Earth faults, loose connections that arc, and voltage spikes are where old boards fall short. Find your board on the left and read across.
| Your board | Overload | Short circuit | Earth fault | Arcing connection | Voltage spike |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rewireable or cartridge fuses | Yes | Yes | No | No | No |
| Circuit breakers, no RCD | Yes | Yes | No | No | No |
| Split load, one or two RCDs | Yes | Yes | Yes, shared | No | No |
| RCBO on every circuit | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| RCBOs plus surge protection | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Yes |
| With arc fault devices (AFDDs) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
How to tell which board you have
Lift the cover. Ceramic or plastic holders you pull out mean fuses. Switches with no test button anywhere mean breakers with no RCD. Two banks of switches, each behind a larger device with a test button, is a split load board. A test button on every single switch means RCBOs.
Why "shared" matters
A split load board does protect against earth faults, but one RCD looks after several circuits. When it trips, everything behind it goes off together, which can mean lights, sockets and a freezer at once. That is a resilience problem rather than a legal one, and it is the usual reason to move to RCBOs.

Is it worth upgrading a fuse box in Ellon?
It is worth upgrading when the board has no earth fault protection, shows heat damage, was coded C1 or C2 on an EICR, or cannot take a circuit you need. Age on its own is not a reason.
No RCD anywhere
Fuses, or breakers with no test button. Leakage through damaged cable, water or a person goes undetected. This is the real safety gap on the list.
Shared RCDs, no surge device
Individual RCBOs keep one fault to one circuit. Surge protection guards electronics, a home office or a heat pump. In a single home you may decline it, and that choice is written on the certificate.
Arc fault devices
AFDDs are required on socket circuits up to 32 A in high rise residential blocks, HMOs, purpose built student housing and care homes. In an ordinary Ellon house they are recommended, not required, and they add real cost per circuit.
Not sure where yours sits? An EICR in Ellon from £150 + VAT gives you coded findings instead of opinions. Under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 only C1 and C2 make a report unsatisfactory. C3 and FI are advisory, though an FI at the board still deserves prompt investigation, particularly in a rented home.
When the board is not the answer
A new board protects circuits but cannot repair them. If old cable is leaking current, a modern RCD will trip on it straight away. That is why we test before we quote a fixed figure.
Where the cable itself is worn out, a rewire in Ellon, in full or in part, may be the better spend. You see the readings and decide.

How long a consumer unit replacement takes in Ellon
A typical Ellon home is finished in one working day, with the power off for roughly 4 to 6 hours of it. Extra bonding, new tails or a board that has to move add time, and we tell you at the quote stage. Our guide on how long a consumer unit replacement takes goes through the timing hour by hour.
- Morning: test with the old board live. Insulation and earth readings are taken first, so any fault in the wiring is on record before we touch the board.
- Power off: change the board. The old unit comes out and the new one goes up. Earthing and main bonding are checked at the same time.
- Connect, label and switch off. Each circuit lands on its own device with its own label. Every device stays off until the circuits are proved.
- Prove every circuit. Continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD trip times are measured and written down.
- Power on and hand over. You get the Electrical Installation Certificate and a walk through the board, including the test buttons.

Before we arrive: clear the space in front of the board, and tell us about anything that cannot lose power, such as medical equipment, a home office or a full freezer, so the day can be planned around it. Heating timers and clocks will need resetting afterwards.
Can you replace your own consumer unit in Ellon?
Not safely, and not to a standard that a buyer, insurer or letting agent will accept. Part P does not apply in Scotland, but the work is still regulated.
The sealed main fuse is not yours
Isolating a board safely normally means drawing the main fuse in the sealed cut out. That belongs to SSEN, the network operator for the north of Scotland, and SSEN's own guidance says an electrician is not accredited to work on its equipment either.
Building regulations still apply
Part P and Building Control notification are England and Wales rules. Here, electrical work must still meet the Building (Scotland) Regulations whether or not a warrant is needed, the owner carries that duty, and BS 7671 is how the work shows it complies.
It has to be proved and certified
Every circuit needs testing with calibrated instruments and the results recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate. Without one, nobody can show the board was fitted correctly when you sell, insure or let the house.
Warrants and Aberdeenshire Council
Ellon falls under Aberdeenshire Council for building standards. A straight board swap in a house of up to two storeys needs no warrant. In flats, maisonettes and buildings of three storeys or more, wider work can, and we check this at the quote.
Letting a property in Ellon?
The Repairing Standard statutory guidance sets the RCD requirement for private lets:
"there must be one or more Residual Current Device (RCD) with rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA in the main or principal consumer unit. Normally, as a minimum, this will cover the socket-outlet circuit."
Source: Repairing Standard statutory guidance, Annex D3, paragraph D.55.
What that means for a landlord's board
- A let with no RCD at all needs work, and a new board is the usual fix.
- A split load board with RCDs covering the sockets generally complies.
- The guidance does not ask for every circuit to be RCD protected.
- The five yearly EICR is a separate duty, and a board change does not replace it.
If you have been told a working split load board fails, ask which paragraph of the guidance says so. We will quote what the property actually needs.
Are fuse upgrades free in Ellon?
The main fuse upgrade from SSEN often is. A consumer unit upgrade is not, because the board belongs to you. People mix the two up, and some search results describe England's network operators, which do not supply Ellon.
The main fuse: SSEN's job
The main fuse sits in the sealed cut out where the cable enters the house. SSEN's FAQ says older properties often have 30A or 60A fuses and that it can upgrade these to an 80A or 100A fuse free of charge. You apply to SSEN directly. When we survey for a new board or a car charger, we read the main fuse rating and tell you if an SSEN application is worth making first.
Is there a free fuse box replacement through the government?
We know of no scheme, Scottish or UK, that pays for a consumer unit on its own. The Home Energy Scotland funding page, checked on 6 October 2026, covers insulation, heating, heat pumps and other energy improvements, not electrical safety. If someone offers a free board through a grant, ask them to name the scheme.
Who owns what at the meter
- SSEN owns the cut out and the main fuse inside it.
- Your energy supplier owns the meter.
- You own the meter tails, the consumer unit and every circuit after it. That is the part we upgrade.
If SSEN or your supplier has to act first, you hear about it at the quote, not on the day.

Upgrading an Ellon consumer unit for an EV charger
A car charger only forces a new board when there is no spare way, the right protection cannot be added, or the supply is too tight for the extra load.
Sometimes a small dedicated unit for the charger does the job and the main board stays. Where the main board is the weak link, fitting both on one visit is £750 to £1,000 + VAT and saves a second day without power. Our article on a consumer unit upgrade for an EV charger explains how we decide, and our EV charger installation in Ellon page covers the charger itself. The same question applies to an electric shower, a hob or a heat pump.
Three questions for any EV quote
- Is there a spare way, or does the board have to change?
- What protection will the charger circuit have?
- Will the main fuse carry the charger with everything else running?
We answer all three in writing before you commit.

How much should it cost to fit a new consumer unit in Ellon?
From £550 + VAT for a typical Ellon home, rising to about £950 + VAT for a larger house or a more complex job. A consumer unit and an EV charger circuit together cost £750 to £1,000 + VAT. Surge protection adds £40 to £80 + VAT and each extra RCBO £25 to £30 + VAT. Bonding corrections, new meter tails and repairs to a failed circuit are priced separately.
Can I replace my consumer unit myself?
No. Isolating the board normally means drawing the sealed main fuse, which belongs to SSEN. Part P does not apply in Scotland, but the work must still meet the Building (Scotland) Regulations, which BS 7671 is used to show, and every circuit needs testing with calibrated instruments and recording on an Electrical Installation Certificate. Without that certificate a buyer, insurer or letting agent has nothing to rely on.
Is there a free fuse box replacement through the government?
We know of no Scottish or UK Government scheme that pays for a consumer unit on its own. The Home Energy Scotland funding page, checked on 6 October 2026, covers insulation, heating, heat pumps and other energy improvements rather than electrical safety. If a free board is offered through a grant, ask which scheme is paying and check it with Home Energy Scotland.
How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
One working day for a typical Ellon home, with the power off for roughly 4 to 6 hours. Extra bonding work, new meter tails or moving the board can add time, and we tell you at the quote stage so you can plan around it.
Is it worth upgrading a fuse box?
Yes if it has rewireable or cartridge fuses, no RCD at all, signs of heat damage, a C1 or C2 code on an EICR, or no room for a circuit you need. A split load board with RCDs over the sockets is still compliant, so upgrading it to RCBOs is about keeping one fault to one circuit rather than a legal requirement.
Are fuse upgrades free?
An upgrade of the main fuse in the sealed cut out often is. SSEN, the network operator for Ellon, says older properties often have 30A or 60A fuses and that it can upgrade these to 80A or 100A free of charge. A consumer unit upgrade is different: the board belongs to you and is paid for, from £550 + VAT with us.
Do I need AFDDs or an RCBO on every circuit?
Not in an ordinary house or flat. AFDDs are required on socket circuits up to 32 A in high rise residential blocks, HMOs, purpose built student housing and care homes, and recommended elsewhere. A split load board with two RCDs remains compliant. We recommend RCBOs because one fault then switches off one circuit, not half the house.
Does my plastic consumer unit have to be replaced?
No. The requirement for a non combustible enclosure applies to boards fitted in homes now. An existing plastic board is not a defect for that reason alone.
I let a property in Ellon. Does it need a new consumer unit?
Only if it falls short of the Repairing Standard, which asks for one or more 30 mA RCDs in the main consumer unit, normally covering the socket circuits as a minimum. A split load board with RCDs over the sockets generally complies. A let with no RCD protection at all needs work.
Will a new board stop my circuits tripping?
It depends on the cause. If small leakages from several circuits add up on one shared RCD, moving to individual RCBOs usually cures it. If a circuit has damaged insulation, a new board will trip on that fault more reliably and the circuit still needs repair. Testing before the change tells you which it is.
Does Amendment 4 mean my Ellon home needs a new board?
No. BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and is still the 18th Edition. Its main changes cover battery storage, functional earthing for ICT systems, Power over Ethernet and medical locations, and none of them forces a domestic board upgrade. Judge your board on its protection, its condition and the circuits you need.
Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?
Not always. It depends on a spare way, the right protection for the charger circuit and enough supply for the extra load. Sometimes a small separate unit is enough. If the main board has to change as well, both together cost £750 to £1,000 + VAT.
