Ellon is largely a town of driveways, and most of the survey is about one question: how far is it from the consumer unit to where the car stands? A short answer keeps the job near the starting price.
Newer estates and driveways
Where the house has a driveway and the board sits on the same side, the charger goes on the nearest outside wall and the cable is clipped down to a weatherproof connection box. Newer homes often fit that pattern. If you drive the A90 to Aberdeen each day, a charger on the drive means the car is ready every morning.
Older stone and granite houses
Granite takes a charger well, but the fixings go into stone and the consumer unit can be in a hall cupboard at the far side of the house. The cable route becomes the quote, so we plan it at the survey and keep it tidy. If you park on the street, a cable across a public pavement needs the permission of Aberdeenshire Council, the roads authority, and we will not fit one that depends on it without that in writing.

Beyond the town
Farms, steadings and long cable runs around Ellon
In the Formartine countryside the question changes from which wall to how far. A farmhouse, a cottage on a long drive or a steading with an outbuilding can put the car well away from the board, and distance sets the cable size, and the cable size sets most of the extra cost.
- Long runs. Past a short run we usually take armoured cable to a small board in the garage or outbuilding and feed the charger from there.
- Rural supplies. Some country properties are fed overhead and run on their own earth rod, which we test before the charger goes on.

Choosing who fits it
Can a normal electrician install an EV charger in Ellon?
Yes, any competent electrician can legally fit one. Whether they should is a different question, because a charger is a long, heavy load running outdoors, and it has its own section of the wiring regulations.
A retailer's fitted package
National retailers and car dealers often sell chargers with installation included, which can suit a simple job. The thing to check is who carries out the survey and the work, and whether earthing protection, board work and the SSEN notification are in the price.
A local OZEV installer

- Is the charger smart? The law requires it for new home chargers.
- How is it protected against an open PEN fault? A good answer names the method.

Earthing and open PEN protection for Ellon homes
Your supply decides how the charger is protected. Both main systems turn up around Ellon, and Amendment 4 treats them differently.
Town and estate supplies
Most Ellon houses take their earth from SSEN on a PME supply. Since Amendment 4, Regulation 722.411.4.1 has no "not reasonably practicable" exception, so an outdoor charger needs an earth electrode, an open PEN device or a voltage monitoring device.
Rural supplies
A farm or cottage on its own earth rod is a TT supply. The open PEN risk does not arise in the same way, so the focus is the rod itself: we test it and the RCD disconnection times, and replace it if the readings are poor.
Every install
6mA DC fault detection is required, built into the charger to BS IEC 62955 or provided by a Type B RCD. Arc fault devices are not required on the charger circuit. Your certificate states the protection used.

Grants, October 2026
Can you get a grant for an EV charger in Ellon?
For renters and flat owners, yes. For a homeowner with a driveway, not at the moment.
UK chargepoint grant (OZEV)
Since 1 April 2026 it pays 75% of the cost of a home chargepoint, up to £500 per socket, funded to 31 March 2027. It covers renters, flat owners and leaseholders with private off street parking and the owner's or freeholder's permission. Homeowners with their own driveway have not qualified since April 2022. We are OZEV authorised, so we claim it and take it off your invoice.
Scottish funding
Home Energy Scotland's domestic charge point funding, aimed at rural, remote and island households under an income cap, was closed when we checked its official page on 6 October 2026. Some installer websites still advertise it, so confirm before you rely on it. We never build a quote around funding that is not open.
Rented homes in Ellon
If you rent a house or flat with its own parking space, you may qualify for the UK grant with your landlord's permission. If you let one out, we can supply wording for your consent. Home or public charging
Home charging or public chargers in Ellon
Ellon has public chargers, and they are useful. For a car that parks at your house, a home charger is usually the simpler routine. We give no public prices because each operator sets its own.
What a home charger gives you
The car charges overnight at your own off peak rate and is full each morning, with no stop on the way to work. A 7.4kW charger adds roughly 7kWh for each hour it runs, so a few off peak hours covers a normal day's driving. The cost to you is the installation once, then your electricity.
What public chargers are good for
Zapmap's Ellon listing, when we checked on 6 October 2026, showed public chargers at Ellon Park and Ride on the A948, at the Station Road car park and at Ellon Community Campus, on the EZO network. They suit top ups and homes with no off street parking. Check the price shown on the charger or its app before you plug in.

We cannot speak for any retailer's current offer, so check their own website. Whoever you ask, compare the quotes line by line: who surveys, whether the price covers the earthing protection, any consumer unit work and the SSEN notification, and who certifies the job. What is the 80/20 rule for EV charging?
It is a battery care habit: for everyday driving, keep the charge between roughly 20% and 80%, and go to 100% only before a long trip. It also describes how rapid public chargers slow down once a battery passes about 80%. A home charger makes the habit easy, because you can set a charge limit in the charger app or in the car. Follow your car maker's guidance first, as some batteries are designed to be charged fully.
Is there a grant for an EV charger in Ellon?
Only for renters, flat owners and leaseholders with private off street parking. The UK chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, and is funded to 31 March 2027.
