Ellon sits about sixteen miles and twenty five minutes north of Aberdeen on the A90 and the bypass, and a lot of the town does that run every day. That daily mileage is exactly the profile where charging at home instead of on the road adds up.

The honest maths is comparative, not a fantasy figure. An overnight top-up on an EV smart tariff costs single-digit pence per unit, against a day rate of around thirty pence and a public rapid charger often at seventy to eighty pence or more. So charging on your own driveway overnight costs a fraction of a daytime charge, and a small fraction of a motorway rapid charge. Over a daily commute those pennies compound, though the exact figure depends on your car, your mileage and your tariff, so we will not put a made-up annual number on it. The charger has to be smart to reach those cheap windows automatically, which is also the law.

The Easy Ones

Ellon has grown fast, and the newer estates by the Ythan are close to ideal for a home charger. On a recent build at Cromleybank, Castlewell or Waterton Park you usually have three things working in your favour: a modern main supply, a modern consumer unit with room for a dedicated circuit, and off-street parking right by the house.

That combination makes for one of the cleanest, fastest installs we do, a short tidy cable run from the board to the driveway wall and a smart charger set up and tested the same day. The one thing we always confirm at the free survey is your main fuse and the spare capacity on the board, because that decides whether the charger goes straight on or needs load management, but on most new-build estate homes it is genuinely straightforward.

The Harder Ones

Older board, granite core, or out in Formartine? Still sorted.

Not every Ellon home is a new-build, and the older ones just need a bit more thought, which is exactly what the survey is for.

On the nineteen seventies and eighties oil boom estates that ring the town, the board is often older and may need a dedicated way or a small upgrade before the charger goes on, and occasionally a load management conversation. In the granite core around Bridge Street, Market Street and Station Road, the challenge is usually the cable route from a rear or side board to a parking spot at the front, which a proper survey matters far more for than the choice of unit. And out in the Formartine steadings toward Pitmedden, Methlick, Tarves, Udny and Newburgh, the runs are longer, there are outbuildings, and there is sometimes TT earthing and armoured submains to deal with. Grants, Honestly

The £500 grant, and who in Ellon actually qualifies.

Here is the honest bad news first. If you own your home and have a driveway, which is most of Ellon, there is no grant, and there has not been one for homeowners since April 2022. We would rather say that plainly than imply a discount that is not there. The £500 per socket grant, funded to 31 March 2027, is for renters and for flat owners who have their own private or allocated off-street parking, and it covers 75% of the cost up to that cap. There is a separate strand, also up to £500, for households with only on-street parking who fit an approved cross-pavement solution. There is also a Scottish rural home charging scheme worth checking if you are out in the Formartine countryside, which is postcode based and opens and closes with its funding, so speak to the Energy Saving Trust and get any offer in hand before the work starts. My Ellon house is older, or in the granite core. Can you still fit one?

Does the charger have to be smart?

Yes, by law for home chargepoints sold in Great Britain since June 2022, and it is what lets you schedule cheap overnight charging. It also keeps charging if the internet drops.

Do I need to tell the network operator?

No, we handle the notification for you. For an EV load the operator, SSEN, has a post-install notification step, and we submit all of it as part of the job. You do not need to chase any of it.
