Will a battery let me add an EV charger and a heat pump without upgrading my supply?
No, not in any sense your electrician can rely on. Maximum demand is assessed on what the installation can draw, not what it usually draws, and a battery can be empty. A flat battery has not failed, it is operating normally while importing at full rate, so it cannot meet the fail safe condition that mitigation measures are held to, and there is no recognised basis for crediting stored energy in a demand assessment. What legitimately changes the assessment is a load curtailment device: BS 7671 Regulation 722.311.201 allows load reduction or disconnection to be taken into account when determining maximum demand. Some hybrid battery systems include exactly that function, and in that case the compliance comes from the curtailment, not the battery.
What does SSEN charge to increase my supply capacity?
Often nothing. SSEN publish that a load check is free of charge, that they will increase your load free of charge if it is a small piece of work when they arrive, and that increases are usually free of charge up to a maximum of 80 amps for domestic customers or 100 amps for small commercial, which is around 23kVA. If it needs a specialist team or a large increase, they send a quotation instead. We do not publish a figure for that, or for a single to three phase conversion, because SSEN do not publish one either; those are quoted per job. Before you buy anything, book the free load check.
How much power does an 80 amp main fuse actually give me?
About 18.4 kilowatts at 230 volts. A 100 amp fuse is around 23kW, which matches SSEN's own description of a maximum 23kVA. To put that in context: a 9.5kW electric shower is roughly 41 amps and a 7.4kW EV charger is 32 amps, so those two alone come to about 73 amps on an 80 amp fuse before anything else in the house is switched on. One caution, though. The rating printed on the carrier is not necessarily the fuse inside it, so do not design a system around what you can read in the cupboard.
How much electricity does a heat pump actually use?
It depends entirely on the specific unit, far more than on its heating output. A Vaillant aroTHERM plus 10kW single phase quotes a rated maximum current of 23.3 amps. A Mitsubishi Ecodan 11.2kW single phase quotes a running current of 11.1 amps in heating at A7/W35. Those are different quoted metrics, so it is not a like for like comparison, and that is the point: the kilowatt figure on the brochure tells you very little about the electrical demand. Whether your house has headroom is a datasheet question settled at design stage.
How much does battery storage cost in Westhill?
A battery retrofitted to existing solar, 5 to 10kWh, is £3,500 to £5,000 fully installed. Solar and a 10kWh battery designed together on a hybrid inverter is £10,000 to £12,000 for a 4kWp array, or £12,000 to £15,000 at 6kWp or above with 10kWh or more. All carry 0% VAT. Do I pay VAT on a battery if I have no solar panels?

Is a battery worth it without solar panels?
It can be, and this is the most misunderstood fact about home storage. On a time of use tariff the battery charges overnight at the cheap rate and runs the house through the expensive evening, and no generation is involved. Two catches. You need to be on, and stay on, a tariff with a wide enough day to night spread, and the spread has to cover the round trip losses of charging and discharging. If either of those fails the arithmetic does not work, so ask to see it before you commit.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery?
Yes. SSEN state on their own pages that G98 and G99 are the technical standards for generators or storage assets. Up to 3.68kW per phase the route is G98, where you connect and then notify, with the form submitted within 28 days of commissioning. Above that and up to 50kW it is G99, applied for and approved before installation. If you already have solar and are adding storage, do not assume the existing arrangement covers you, and settle it before ordering equipment.
Where can a battery legally be installed in my house?
That is governed by PAS 63100:2024, the domestic standard published in March 2024 covering protection against fire of battery energy storage systems in dwellings. It sets out where an enclosure may and may not be sited, and clause 6.1.3 caps the total energy stored within a single enclosure at 20 kilowatt hours. In practice, in a Westhill house, the garage or a utility is usually the straightforward answer, but the siting question is settled at survey against the standard rather than assumed.
Will a battery keep my house running in a power cut?
Only if it is specifically designed to. Backup is not automatic; it needs a changeover arrangement and a defined set of circuits, and what it costs depends on how much of the house you want covered. Worth being realistic locally: most of Westhill is served by modern underground distribution, so outage frequency is not the pain point here that it is on the exposed coast. Do I need a building warrant for battery storage?
Normally not for fitting storage inside an existing dwelling, which is usually warrant exempt electrical work. Any structural alteration or new external structure to house it is a separate question. Note that Scotland has Building Standards and building warrants rather than Part P, there is no Building Control body to notify, and for Westhill the authority is Aberdeenshire Council in the Garioch area, not Aberdeen City.
Is there a grant for battery storage in Scotland in 2026?
No. The Home Energy Scotland interest free loan for solar PV and battery storage closed to new applications in June 2024 and has not returned. ECO4 is a heating and insulation obligation aimed at benefit eligible households and does not fund battery storage for a typical owner occupier. What genuinely exists is 0% VAT until at least 31 March 2027, including on standalone batteries since February 2024, and Smart Export Guarantee income paid by your electricity supplier where you also have generation.
