Home Battery Storage in Aberdeen from £3,500
A 10kWh home battery fitted in an Aberdeen house or flat costs from £3,500 with us, with no solar panels needed and no VAT to add. We check first where a battery can safely sit in your property, then send one fixed written price, usually within one working day of the free survey. Phone 07304 027013.
Faithful Spark Electricians installs home batteries across Aberdeen City: £3,500 to £5,000 for 10kWh and £5,000 to £7,000 for 15kWh, standalone or alongside solar. Each price includes the lithium iron phosphate battery (we fit SolaX, Alpha ESS, Fox ESS and SolarEdge), any inverter the system needs, the new circuit to your consumer unit, the grid notice or application to SSEN, testing and certification to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, and the app that shows what the battery is doing.
The work is done by our own team: Steven Watt, who holds the City and Guilds Level 3 award for small electrical energy storage systems, with Callum working alongside him. If you already know us as your electricians in Aberdeen for other jobs, it is the same team. Questions before a survey are welcome on 07304 027013, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
A home battery is a single unit on a wall or floor inside your property. The battery storage sites you may read about in Scotland are grid scale facilities that store power for the network, a different thing entirely.

How much does battery storage cost in Aberdeen?
Battery storage for an Aberdeen home costs £3,500 to £5,000 fitted for a 10kWh battery, about £350 to £500 for every kWh you store. Larger batteries and combined solar systems are priced below, all with 0% VAT.
| System | Who it tends to suit | Fitted price |
|---|---|---|
| 10kWh battery, no solar | Flats and houses on a time of use tariff, including flats with no roof of their own | £3,500 to £5,000 |
| 5 to 10kWh added to existing solar | Homes exporting much of what their panels make | £3,500 to £5,000 |
| 15kWh battery | Bigger houses, heat pumps, electric heating or a car on a night rate | £5,000 to £7,000 |
| 4kWp solar plus 10kWh battery | Houses with a roof the owner controls | £10,000 to £12,000 |
| Solar, battery and myenergi Zappi charger | Households with an electric car | £12,500 to £15,500 |
Why two Aberdeen homes get different prices
- The location the survey finds. A garage beside the meter is a short, simple job. A second floor flat where the only suitable spot is the kitchen at the far end means a longer cable run and more making good.
- Your consumer unit. An older board with no spare way, or one not suited to a battery, may need replacing first. That is a separate line, a consumer unit upgrade in Aberdeen from £550 + VAT.
- The wall itself. Granite takes a heavy bracket well with the right fixings; a stud or lath partition may mean a floor standing unit instead.
- Backup circuits for a power cut, which we price as an option.
- Capacity, sized from your own half hourly meter data.
No VAT on the battery prices above. Under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, section 2.19, residential battery installs are zero rated, including a battery with no solar charged from the grid (since 1 February 2024). The zero rate runs to 31 March 2027, after which it is due to become 5%. Consumer unit work is standard rated.
Where a home battery can go in an Aberdeen flat or house
In most Aberdeen houses the answer is a garage, utility room or an outside wall. In a flat it is usually a kitchen or utility room, and occasionally nowhere at all, because the fire safety rules exclude the very spaces a flat has spare.
Granite tenements and flats
Many city flats have no garage, no private outside wall at ground level and a single internal hall that is the way out in a fire. A kitchen or utility room is often the only workable place, so space and the wall it hangs on decide the job.
Semis and terraces in the suburbs
A garage, utility room or a side wall away from doors and windows usually gives a choice of spots. The shorter the run to the consumer unit, the lower the price.
Newer estates on the city edges
Integral garages and modern boards often make these the simplest installs. We still check the board is suitable for a battery circuit before we quote.
What PAS 63100 rules out
PAS 63100:2024 is the specification for fire safety of home batteries. It keeps batteries out of bedrooms and cupboards that open into them, off escape routes such as hallways, landings and stairs, and restricts lofts and roof spaces. An outdoor unit has to keep clear of doors, windows, vents and escape routes. One enclosure is capped at 20kWh.
The common close is not an option
A tenement stair is the escape route for every flat in the building, so a battery cannot go there, and fixing anything to common parts normally needs your neighbours' agreement in any case. A battery inside your own flat, wired from your own board, avoids both problems.
What we do at survey: walk each possible spot against PAS 63100, check the wall, the temperature range of the battery we would propose and the route to your board, and tell you which location works. If none does, you hear that before you pay anything.
Tell us your floor and your rooms
House or flat, which floor, and whether you have a garage, utility room or private outside wall. That is usually enough for us to say on the phone if a battery is realistic.
Do I need planning permission for battery storage in Aberdeen?
Usually not for a battery inside your home, because planning rules are about the outside of a building. An outdoor battery is the case to check, and Aberdeen City Council is the planning and building standards authority for the city.
No battery class in Scottish permitted development
The Scottish Government's Planning Circular 1/2024 lists microgeneration classes for heat pumps, wind turbines, solar panels and biomass or CHP flues. Batteries have no class of their own, so a unit on an outside wall is judged as a general alteration to the outside of the home.
Houses, flats and conservation areas
For a house, the circular's general class covers alterations projecting no more than 1 metre from the wall (Class 2B); for a flat, Class 4A does the same. Neither class applies in a conservation area, and Class 4A not within the curtilage of a listed building, so an external battery there needs planning permission.
Listed buildings
If your home is a listed building, listed building consent may be needed for work that affects its character, inside or out. Aberdeen City Council can confirm the status of your property, and we build any consent into the timetable.
Building warrants from Aberdeen City Council
Most battery installs in a house involve no building work. Flats are where to be careful: electrical work in a flat can need a building warrant from Aberdeen City Council Building Standards, as can a new outbuilding for the battery. We tell you at survey if yours does. The owner applies, and BS 7671 certification applies either way. Part P and Building Control notification are England and Wales rules and play no part here.
SSEN and your grid connection
SSEN runs the network in Aberdeen. An inverter of up to 3.68kW per phase is notified under G98 once commissioned; a larger one needs approval under G99 before it is switched on. We make the submission and allow for any wait in your start date.
How long will a 10kWh battery last?
Divide the usable energy by what the home draws. A 10kWh battery with about 9kWh usable runs a 0.5kW evening for around 18 hours, but a 2kW spell of cooking and washing for only about four and a half.
A worked example for a city semi
Take a family home on a time of use tariff where the battery charges overnight at the cheap rate and only has to cover the dear part of the day. From 4pm to 11pm the house averages 1.1kW: tea cooking, a washing machine, lights, screens. Seven hours at 1.1kW is 7.7kWh, which leaves about 1.3kWh in reserve before the cheap rate starts again and the battery refills.
A one bedroom flat with gas heating might use well under half of that in the same hours, which is why we often suggest a smaller battery for a flat rather than the 10kWh default.
Usable is not the same as the label
Battery makers quote nominal capacity. We keep a small reserve at commissioning so the cells are not drained to zero every night, and there are conversion losses through the inverter. That is why our examples assume about 9kWh usable from a 10kWh battery: a working assumption, not a figure for one model.
Power has a ceiling too
The inverter limits how many kilowatts the battery can deliver at once. Switch on the oven, kettle and shower together and the grid tops up the difference, so you stay powered while the battery covers its share.
About 9kWh usable at different average loads
| Average load | Hours |
|---|---|
| Fridge, router and standby only, 0.25kW | 36 |
| Relaxed evening in a flat, 0.5kW | 18 |
| Family evening in a semi, 1.1kW | about 8 |
| Cooking and washing together, 2kW | 4.5 |
Loads are illustrations of the sum, not readings from your home. Over the years, warranties on the batteries we fit are typically 10 years, depending on brand and model, and they guarantee a share of the original capacity rather than an end date.
Does a home battery save money in Aberdeen?
It can, mainly through your tariff. A battery that only soaks up summer solar surplus earns little; one that moves your evening use onto a cheaper night rate is what makes the sums work.
From solar alone
Using a stored unit at home avoids paying 24p for it, while exporting it would earn around 14.5p. On 1,000 kWh of surplus a year, after about 8% lost in charging and discharging, the gain comes to roughly £76 a year.
From a cheaper night rate
Each kWh moved from dear to cheap hours saves the difference between the two rates, less losses. To earn back £3,500 to £5,000 inside a 10 year warranty while shifting 2,500 kWh a year, that difference needs to be roughly 14p to 20p. No roof needed, so this route suits flats.
Our check before you commit: we read your tariff and a year of meter data, model the saving on your figures, and say so plainly if the battery is better seen as backup and convenience than as an investment. Some time of use tariffs charge more than 24p in the day, so a home that cannot shift enough use can pay more, not less. The bigger picture is in our guide is battery storage worth it in Scotland.
Batteries and electric cars
A cheap overnight car tariff often lets the battery fill at the same low rate as the car. If you need a charger too, we handle EV charger installation in Aberdeen and set both up together. One setting matters on some smart tariffs; our guide shows how to stop Intelligent Octopus Go draining your battery.
Power cuts
A grid connected battery switches off when the mains fails unless it has an emergency power supply output. With one, chosen circuits such as lights, the fridge and boiler controls keep running from the battery. We show it as a separately priced option on your quote.
Home battery brands we fit in Aberdeen
All four approved brands use lithium iron phosphate, a stable chemistry with a long cycle life. In a flat the deciding factors are often size, weight and whether the unit can stand on the floor.
SolaX
Triple Power batteries in 5.8kWh modules that stack to roughly 23kWh, with a 10 year warranty and SolaX Cloud monitoring. Useful where you may add a car or heat pump later.
Alpha ESS and Fox ESS
Hybrid inverters and modular batteries for new systems, or a battery with its own inverter next to panels you already own. Modules let capacity follow your meter data.
SolarEdge
The natural partner for an existing SolarEdge system with optimisers, keeping panels and battery in one app.
Adding to panels, or starting with both. An AC coupled battery sits beside an existing solar system without touching it. A DC coupled system runs panels and battery through one hybrid inverter, which suits a new install or a tired old inverter. If you are also weighing up a roof array, see our page on solar panels in Aberdeen.

How much does battery storage cost in Aberdeen?
Fitted by us, a 10kWh home battery costs £3,500 to £5,000 and a 15kWh battery £5,000 to £7,000, with 0% VAT. A 4kWp solar system with a 10kWh battery is £10,000 to £12,000. Location, your consumer unit and any backup circuits set the final fixed price.
How long will a 10kWh battery last?
With about 9kWh usable, around 18 hours at a 0.5kW evening load and about 4.5 hours at 2kW. On a time of use tariff it only needs to cover the dear hours, so a typical family evening of 7.7kWh leaves some in reserve. Warranties are typically 10 years, depending on brand and model.
Do I need planning permission for battery storage?
Usually not for a battery inside your home. Scottish permitted development has no battery class, so an outside wall unit is treated as a general alteration, allowed up to 1 metre from the wall but not in a conservation area. Listed buildings can also need consent. Aberdeen City Council is the authority for the city.
Can I have a home battery in a flat?
Often, if there is a suitable room. PAS 63100 keeps batteries out of bedrooms, cupboards opening into them and escape routes such as hallways and the common stair, so a kitchen or utility room is the usual candidate. A building warrant may be needed for a flat, and we confirm at survey.
Do I need a building warrant for a home battery in Aberdeen?
For most houses, no building work is involved. Electrical work in a flat, or a new outbuilding for the battery, can need a warrant from Aberdeen City Council Building Standards. The owner applies, and we advise at survey. Part P and Building Control do not apply in Scotland.
Is there a battery storage facility in Scotland?
Yes, Scotland has grid scale battery sites that store electricity for the network. They are a separate thing from a home battery, which is a single unit in your own property running your own home.
Can I get a battery without solar panels?
Yes. A standalone battery charges from the grid at cheaper hours and has been zero rated for VAT since 1 February 2024. It suits flats and homes with no usable roof, provided you are on a time of use tariff with a large enough gap between rates.
Will a home battery work in a power cut?
Only with an emergency power supply output. Without it, a grid connected battery shuts down when the mains fails. With it, chosen circuits such as lights, the fridge and boiler controls stay on. We price it separately on the quote.
Which battery brands do you install?
SolaX, Alpha ESS, Fox ESS and SolarEdge, all lithium iron phosphate. We choose the model to suit your space, your meter data and any solar you already have.
