What moves a Cults price
- How many boards. A villa with a garage board and a garden room sub board is three enclosures, not one.
- Circuit count. High ceilinged period houses with added rooms often carry more circuits than their age suggests.
- The board's position. A hallway press or under stair cupboard with little room behind the old fuse carriers takes longer to clear.
- Bonding. Main bonding to the water and gas pipes that is absent or undersized gets corrected on the same visit.
- Tails. Old meter tails that are perished or too short to reach the new enclosure are renewed.

Replacing the fuse box in a Cults granite villa
Many of the Victorian and Edwardian villas off North Deeside Road have had kitchens, bathrooms and extensions modernised while the board stayed as it was. We still find fuse wire carriers and early boards with no residual current protection in them.
Why the old board is the weak point
A rewireable fuse only reacts to too much current. It cannot sense current leaking to earth through a damaged cable or a person, which is what an RCD or RCBO is there to catch. In a villa that holds cable from several decades, that missing protection matters more than the age of the box itself.
How we handle a period board change
- Insulation readings on every existing circuit first, so the condition of the cables is known before the new board goes live.
- The new metal enclosure sited to suit the hallway or cupboard, normally in the same position so the granite and plaster are left alone.
- Circuits that fail their readings are shown to you with the figures, and priced before any repair.

Cults houses with more than one consumer unit

How long a consumer unit replacement takes in Cults
Allow one working day for a single board, with the electricity off for roughly 4 to 6 hours. Each further board adds time, and the survey tells you how much. Our article on how long a consumer unit replacement takes goes through the stages in more depth.
- 1Readings while it is still live. Insulation and earth values are taken from your existing circuits so a cable fault is found before the swap.
- 2Supply off, old board out. The new enclosure goes up in its place and the earthing and bonding are checked.
- 3One circuit at a time. Each circuit is connected to its own device and labelled, with all devices left off.
- 4Dead tests, then live tests. Continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, loop impedance and RCD trip times are measured and recorded.
- 5Power back on. You get the certificate and a walk through the main switch and test buttons.
Plan ahead: tell us about anything that must stay powered, such as medical equipment or a full freezer, and keep the route to each board clear. Clocks, the heating timer and the router will want resetting once the power returns.
Is it illegal to replace your own consumer unit in Cults?
No Scottish law names a consumer unit and bans an owner from changing it, but the finished work must still meet the building regulations, and doing it safely is beyond a home toolkit. Several national guides answer this with Part P. That is the wrong country for a Cults house.
Part P is not Scottish
Part P and Building Control notification come from the regulations for England and Wales. Neither has ever applied in Scotland, so a quote or guide that promises "Part P sign off" for an AB15 address is written for somewhere else.
Standard 4.5 does apply
Scotland's building standard 4.5 asks for an electrical installation that is safe and not a fire risk. The domestic Technical Handbook points to BS 7671 and to people with suitable knowledge and experience doing the work.
No warrant for like for like
Swapping a fixture for one of the same general type is exempt from a building warrant under Schedule 3, type 24, if the result is no worse than before. The owner still holds the duty to comply, and in Cults the authority is Aberdeen City Council.
The main fuse is SSEN's
Making a board dead normally means drawing the sealed main fuse in the cut out, which belongs to SSEN and is not yours to remove. Then every circuit has to be tested with calibrated instruments and recorded.
What BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 changes for a Cults board
Amendment 4 was published on 15 April 2026 and is still the 18th Edition. It governs the board being fitted, not whether your existing board may stay.
- Enclosure. A new domestic consumer unit must be non combustible, which means metal in practice. An existing plastic board is not a defect for that reason alone.
- Arc fault detection. AFDDs are required on socket circuits up to 32 A in high rise residential buildings, HMOs, purpose built student housing and care homes. In a Cults house they are a recommendation, priced only if you ask.
- Surge protection. The owner of a single home may decline a surge protection device, and the decision goes on the certificate.
- RCBOs. An RCBO for each circuit is our recommendation, not a legal requirement. A split load board with two RCDs still complies; see split load and dual RCD consumer units for the difference.
Why the certificate matters later
When a Cults house is sold or let, solicitors, letting agents and insurers ask what was done to the wiring and who did it. An Electrical Installation Certificate from a NICEIC Approved Contractor answers that. A board fitted with no certificate leaves them nothing to go on.

Can you get a free consumer unit replacement in Cults?
Not for the consumer unit itself, as far as we can find. What is often free is a bigger main fuse from SSEN, which is a different part of the supply.
Government funding
We looked at the Home Energy Scotland funding page on 6 October 2026. It is the main door to Scottish Government help with the home, and its grants, loans and Warmer Homes Scotland support are aimed at insulation, heating and heat pumps. Consumer units and wiring do not appear. If anyone offers a Cults household a free board through a grant, ask which scheme pays and check with Home Energy Scotland before agreeing.
The main fuse upgrade from SSEN
Cults is on SSEN's network. SSEN's own FAQ says older properties often have 30A or 60A fuses and that it can upgrade these to an 80A or 100A fuse free of charge. You ask SSEN for it yourself. At the survey we read the rating on your cut out and tell you if an application makes sense before a charger, a shower or a heat pump.
Who owns what by your meter
- SSEN: the sealed cut out and its main fuse.
- Your energy supplier: the meter.
- You: the tails, every consumer unit in the house and the circuits beyond them. Those are what we replace.
If SSEN or the supplier must act first, we tell you at the survey rather than on the day.

There is no set number of years. We know of no age in BS 7671 at which a sound board must come out, so a consumer unit is replaced on condition: no residual current protection, fuse wire, heat damage, or no room for a circuit you need.
How to find out where your board stands
A board can look tidy and still be missing protection, or look dated and be perfectly sound. If you want a written answer on the whole installation before deciding, an EICR in Cults gives you one. If the report points at the board, we price the replacement from what it found.
Letting a flat or house in Cults
The Repairing Standard guidance sets a minimum at paragraph D.55:
"there must be one or more Residual Current Device (RCD) with rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA in the main or principal consumer unit. Normally, as a minimum, this will cover the socket-outlet circuit."

A charger only forces a board change when there is no free way, no suitable protection for its circuit, or not enough supply for the extra load.
Plenty of Cults houses have the private drive that makes home charging easy, and many boards can take a charger circuit as they stand or with a small dedicated unit beside them. Is it illegal to replace your own consumer unit in Scotland?
No Scottish law singles out the consumer unit, and Part P does not apply here. The finished work must still meet building standard 4.5, which looks to BS 7671 and to people with the right knowledge and experience. Safe isolation means drawing SSEN's sealed main fuse, which is not the owner's to remove, and without tests recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate there is nothing to show a buyer, insurer or letting agent.
Can I get a free fuse box replacement from the government?
We have not found a scheme that pays for a consumer unit by itself. The Home Energy Scotland funding page, checked on 6 October 2026, covers insulation, heating and heat pumps rather than wiring. If a free board is offered through a grant, ask which scheme is paying and confirm it with Home Energy Scotland.
