EV Charging in Cults

A driveway in Cults is made for home charging. The granite is the part to get right.

Cults runs along North Deeside Road on the north bank of the River Dee, four to five miles west of Aberdeen city centre and one of the BMC suburbs alongside Bieldside and Milltimber. Most homes here are the kind drivers switching to an EV dream of: granite Victorian and Edwardian villas and large detached houses with generous private driveways, so the car sits off street every night. The catch is the frontage. A period granite elevation should never wear a length of plastic trunking stapled across it. The skill on a Cults install is finding a discreet route, through a void, a garage wall, or a soffit, so the charger looks like it was always meant to be there. Steven Watt plans that route on the survey.

  • Smart by law, solar ready by choice of unit
  • Discreet cable routing for granite and period frontages
  • DNO notification handled via the ENA process
  • Honest pricing, extras quoted after the survey
  • We also cover Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter

The Cults Cable Run

Routing the cable so your villa keeps its looks.

On a modern render box the cable route barely matters. On a granite Cults villa it is the whole job. Drilling and clipping a run of trunking straight across a dressed granite elevation is exactly what these homes do not need, and it is the first thing a careful buyer or a future surveyor will notice.

We treat the route as a design problem before it is an electrical one. On the free survey Steven walks the frontage with you and finds the discreet path: out through the garage or utility wall, up inside a soffit, behind a downpipe line, or through an existing void, so the cable reaches a weatherproof unit by the driveway with the minimum of visible run. Where a short external length is unavoidable on a long Deeside driveway, we use a colour matched, neatly clipped route rather than surface trunking slapped across the stone.

The same care applies to the big roofs these homes carry. A large Cults villa is a strong candidate for solar, which is why we fit solar ready units like the myenergi Zappi: add panels later and the charger can pull your surplus straight into the car.

We notify the network operator so you do not have to.

A 7.4kW charger draws 32A. On most Cults homes, adding that load takes the property over the 60A connect and notify threshold, which means the local Distribution Network Operator has to be told before the charger goes live. This is done through the Energy Networks Association process, and plenty of installers quietly leave it to the homeowner, or skip it entirely.

We handle it for you. Where the supply needs it we apply before installing, or fit load management so the property stays safely within its supply. It is part of doing the job properly, not an optional extra, and it keeps your installation compliant and your insurer happy.

  • 7.4kW charger draws 32A on a single phase supply
  • Adding it usually crosses the 60A connect and notify line
  • We notify the DNO via the ENA process for you
  • Apply before install, or fit load management to stay in supply
  • Installed to BS 7671 with the correct RCBO protection

Smart, And Solar Ready

What smart means, and what solar ready actually adds.

There is a lot of loose marketing around home chargers, so here is the plain version. Every new home charger sold in Great Britain has to be smart by law, under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, in force since 30 June 2022. Smart means the charger can schedule a charge, default to off peak times, and apply a randomised start delay to protect the grid. That is the legal requirement, and every unit we fit meets it.

Solar ready is something different, and it is a feature of the units we choose rather than a legal mandate. Every charger we install, the Ohme Home Pro, TeltoCharge, Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and myenergi Zappi, also supports solar surplus charging. So if you have panels, or add them later to one of those large Cults roofs, the charger can divert your own generation into the car instead of exporting it.

For the record, 22kW charging needs a three phase supply, which the great majority of homes do not have. A Cults home install is 7.4kW single phase, which is plenty to fill a car overnight.

Qualified For EV Work

The EV charging qualification, backed by the core electrical awards.

An EV charger is a dedicated electrical installation, not a plug in gadget. Steven Watt holds the specific City and Guilds award for electric vehicle charging design and installation, on top of his 18th Edition and full electrical diploma. These are individual qualifications, held alongside our NICEIC approved contractor status. Anyone can claim them, so here they are.

On the grant, honestly: the EV chargepoint grant is £500 per socket from 1 April 2026, but it is for renters and flat owners with private off street parking and landlord permission, not for a typical Cults homeowner with their own driveway. It is funded to 31 March 2027. We will tell you on the survey whether you qualify rather than imply a discount that is not there.

Cults EV Questions

What Cults homeowners ask before booking.

Not covered here? Call 07304 027013 or get in touch and we will come back the same business day.

Can you fit an EV charger on my granite villa without ugly cabling across the front?

Yes, this is exactly what we plan for on a Cults install. On the free survey we find a discreet route, through a garage or utility wall, up inside a soffit, or through an existing void, so the cable reaches a weatherproof unit by the driveway with the minimum of visible run. We do not staple surface trunking across a dressed granite frontage. Where a short external length is unavoidable on a long driveway, we clip a colour matched run neatly rather than spoil the elevation.

Do you handle the DNO notification, or is that left to me?

We handle it. A 7.4kW charger draws 32A, and on most Cults homes that takes the property over the 60A connect and notify threshold, so the local Distribution Network Operator has to be told via the Energy Networks Association process. Where the supply needs it we apply before installing, or fit load management to keep you within supply. Some installers skip this. We do not, because it is part of installing the charger properly.

What does the £900 actually get me, and what is extra?

From £900 + VAT covers a basic 7.4kW smart charger fitted on a single phase supply with a cable run up to 15 metres, including the free survey. Honest extras, quoted only after the survey, are runs longer than 15 metres, a consumer unit upgrade if your board needs one, and any earthing upgrade. We name every extra in the written quote so the starting price stays truthful.

My Cults home has a big roof. Is it worth getting a solar ready charger?

Often yes. The large roofs on Cults villas make solar attractive, and a solar ready charger like the myenergi Zappi can divert your own generation straight into the car rather than exporting it. Every charger we fit is smart as the law requires and also solar ready, so even if you add panels later the charger is ready to use them. We can advise on pairing solar with your EV setup on the survey.

Will I get the EV charger grant as a Cults homeowner?

Probably not, and we would rather be straight with you. The EV chargepoint grant is £500 per socket from 1 April 2026, but it is limited to renters and flat owners with private off street parking and landlord permission, funded to 31 March 2027. A typical Cults homeowner with their own driveway is not eligible. If you let a flat or rent, we will check eligibility on the survey.

Do I need 22kW charging, and do you cover Bieldside and Milltimber too?

You almost certainly do not need 22kW. That requires a three phase supply, which the vast majority of homes do not have, and a 7.4kW single phase charger fills a car comfortably overnight. And yes, we cover Bieldside, Pitfodels, Milltimber and Peterculter on the same terms as Cults, with no travel charge across lower Deeside.
