Under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, every new home charger in Great Britain has to be smart, so all of ours are. For a straightforward Cults job, the full figure falls inside our £900 to £1,300 range, with VAT added on top. A quote far below that usually covers less: fewer metres of cable, no open PEN protection, or nobody telling SSEN. A quote far above it should explain the extra work line by line, and ours always does.

Only from a private space you have the right to use. Aberdeen City Council, the roads authority for Cults, states on its EV charging questions page that it cannot allow a charging cable across a public pavement or authorise a channel under one.
When we read the council's page on 6 October 2026, it ruled out both a trailing cable and a pavement channel, so a cross pavement setup is not something we can offer in Cults. OZEV does fund cross pavement charging, but only where the local roads authority consents.
If your flat comes with an allocated bay in a private car park, a charger there is often possible with written consent from whoever owns or manages it. As a flat owner or renter you may also qualify for the OZEV grant described below.
Most chargers on a private drive need no planning permission, but a listed building or a conservation area can change that. If either may apply to your home, check with Aberdeen City Council before we fit anything.

Legally, yes: any competent electrician can. What separates installers is whether they can claim a grant, whether they work to the EV part of the wiring rules, and whether they inform the network operator.
Grant money is only paid through installers on the government's authorised list. We are on it as EVHS/WCS14254, so an eligible renter, flat owner or landlord in Cults sees the grant come straight off the invoice.

Often it will not. A board with a free way and RCD protection can feed the charger directly, or a compact EV unit can be mounted next to it, like the one pictured.
A villa still running an original or heavily altered board, rewireable fuses or no RCDs needs board work before the charger. Done on the same visit, that costs £750 to £1,000 + VAT. Larger houses with extensions sometimes have more than one board, so we look at each of them at the survey.

An owner living in their own house gets no government grant towards a home charger. The OZEV schemes below run until 31 March 2027 and lower the cost for other groups.
75% of the cost of buying and installing one socket, capped at £500, if you have private off street parking you are entitled to use and permission from the landlord or freeholder. OZEV has to approve the application before we start, and the grant is then deducted from our invoice.
Landlords can claim up to £500 per socket, for as many as 200 sockets across all their properties.
Not eligible for the household grant, and neither are new builds that had to include a charger by law. Home Energy Scotland's domestic charge point funding was listed as closed on 6 October 2026, so our quotes never assume a grant.
OZEV runs a separate grant for cross pavement charging, but it needs the roads authority's consent, and Aberdeen City Council's page says it does not permit cables or channels across its pavements.
Cults has its own public charging point in the Dunmail Avenue car park. It is handy for a quick top up. For regular driving, a charger on your own wall takes far less effort and is there every night.
Zapmap, checked on 6 October 2026, lists two devices at 42 Dunmail Avenue (AB15 9LW) on the EZO network, with CCS and CHAdeMO connectors at 50kW and Type 2 at 22kW. Aberdeen City Council says its chargers have moved from ChargePlace Scotland to EZO, with new prices and limits on how long you can stay. We do not quote public prices; the EZO app shows them.
A public charger means a trip, perhaps a wait, and a time limit. A 7.4kW home unit delivers roughly 7kWh for every hour the car is connected, so plugging in overnight on a cheap rate covers normal daily driving while you sleep.
Charge to around 80% and avoid running below about 20% in normal use, going to 100% only when a long trip needs it. Lithium ion batteries tend to age more slowly away from both ends, and rapid chargers taper hard past 80%. If your handbook says otherwise, follow the handbook, because some battery types are designed to be filled.

It means charging to about 80% and not letting the battery fall much below 20% for everyday use, then charging to 100% only before a long journey. Your car maker's advice comes first, as some batteries are designed to be charged to full.
