Replacing a fuse box on a rural Maryculter property
Away from the village, a Maryculter board change often involves more than the box in the hall. Three things decide how big the job is: how the house is earthed, whether other buildings have boards of their own, and how old the existing equipment is.
Homes on their own earth rod
If your electricity arrives on overhead poles, the house may have no earth from the network and rely instead on a rod driven into the ground. That is a TT supply. The soil makes the fault path long and resistive, so ordinary breakers alone cannot be relied on to disconnect quickly, and the protection comes from RCDs.
Before the old board comes off we measure the rod's resistance, check its clamp and the earthing conductor back to the main earthing terminal, and confirm the main bonding. A rod that is corroded, buried under later work or reading too high is replaced or supplemented first, priced separately and shown to you before we start.
Garages, byres and workshops with a sub board
A detached garage or workshop fed from the house usually has its own small board, and the cable out to it is often older than anything indoors. We test that run for size, damage and protection, and decide after testing how the outbuilding should be earthed.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take in Maryculter?

- Agree the switch off. We plan the power off window around freezers, water pumps, heating and anyone working from home.
- Isolate and replace. The old board comes out, the new enclosure goes up, and each circuit is connected to its own device and labelled.
- Test before power returns. Continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD trip times are measured and written down.
- Certificate and walk through. You get the Electrical Installation Certificate and a short tour of the board, test buttons included.

Can I replace a consumer unit myself in Maryculter?
You would have no safe way to isolate it and no way to prove the result. Some national cost guides describe a board change as notifiable under Part P, but that is an England and Wales rule that has never applied in Scotland. The Scottish rules below are the ones that count in Maryculter.
The main fuse is SSEN's
Isolating a board safely normally means drawing the main fuse from the sealed cut out. That fuse belongs to SSEN, and SSEN's FAQ says an electrician will not be accredited to work on its main network either.
Standard 4.5 applies
Scottish building standard 4.5 requires an electrical installation that is not a threat to health or a source of fire. The domestic Technical Handbook expects it to be designed, installed and tested to BS 7671 by someone with the right knowledge and experience.
Like for like, no warrant
Replacing a fixture with one of the same general type is exempt from a building warrant under Schedule 3, type 24, as long as the result is no worse. The duty to comply stays with the owner, and Aberdeenshire Council is the authority for Maryculter.
The certificate is the proof
Every circuit has to be tested with calibrated instruments and the readings recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate. We know of no official source saying DIY work automatically voids home insurance, so read your own policy.
Renting out a Maryculter home or cottage?
The Repairing Standard statutory guidance for private landlords says:
"there must be one or more Residual Current Device (RCD) with rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA in the main or principal consumer unit. Normally, as a minimum, this will cover the socket-outlet circuit."

What that means for a rural let
- A main board with no 30 mA RCD needs work, normally a replacement.
- A split load board whose RCDs cover the sockets generally satisfies it.
- RCD protection on every single circuit is not demanded.
- The five yearly EICR remains a separate duty.
Under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 only C1 and C2 codes make an EICR unsatisfactory. C3 and FI are advisory, though an FI against the board should still be investigated promptly in a rented home. Send us the report and we will tell you whether the board needs replacing.
Can I get a free consumer unit replacement from the government?
No scheme we know of pays for a consumer unit on its own, in Scotland or across the UK. The free upgrade that does exist is SSEN's main fuse, which is a separate piece of equipment.
Home Energy Scotland checked
On 6 October 2026 the Home Energy Scotland funding page listed support for insulation, heating, heat pumps and Warmer Homes Scotland, with extra help for rural homes, and nothing for electrical safety work. If a Maryculter household is offered a free board through a grant, ask for the scheme's name and confirm it with Home Energy Scotland first.

Is Maryculter in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire?
Aberdeenshire. Maryculter sits on the south bank of the Dee and its AB12 postcode gives an Aberdeen address, but Aberdeenshire Council is the building standards authority. Peterculter on the north bank is in Aberdeen City. A like for like board change needs no building warrant either way.
My house is on an earth rod. Does that change the board?
Yes. On a TT supply the protection against earth faults comes from RCDs, so we normally fit an RCBO on every circuit, often with a time delayed 100 mA RCD at the front. We measure the rod before the old board comes off and replace or supplement it if it reads too high or is damaged.
Do the boards in my garage and workshop need replacing too?
Not automatically. We test each board and the cable feeding it, and judge each on its own condition. Sometimes only the house board needs changing and sometimes the outbuilding board is the priority. You see the readings and the price for each before deciding.
Can you fit a three phase consumer unit?
Yes. Some rural properties have a three phase supply for a workshop, pumps or machinery. Three phase boards are priced after a survey, because the loads, the cable runs and the number of boards decide the work.
Does Amendment 4 mean my board has to be replaced?
No. BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 is still the 18th Edition and does not force a working domestic board out. A plastic consumer unit already on the wall is not a defect for that reason alone, arc fault devices are recommended rather than required in an ordinary home, and a split load board with RCDs remains compliant.
Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?
Not always. It depends on a spare way, the right protection and earthing for the charger circuit, and enough supply for the extra load. Where the main board must change as well, the board and charger together cost £750 to £1,000 + VAT.
