Why Fraserburgh quotes differ so much
Directory averages and online prices for the town vary by hundreds of pounds, mostly because they are not pricing the same job. A low figure can mean the charger alone, a few metres of cable, or no allowance for the earthing protection the regulations now demand. On the coast it can also mean standard zinc plated fixings on a wall that faces the sea.

- Network notification. Who tells SSEN.
- Certificate. You should be handed one.

Salt air on the Broch coast

Fraserburgh sits right on the North Sea, and salt carried on the wind settles on anything fixed to an outside wall. Corrosion usually starts at the small parts first: cable glands, screws, brackets and the terminals of the outdoor connection box.
What changes on a seafront or harbour facing wall
- Enclosure rating. Chargers do not all carry the same ingress protection rating. On walls close to the seafront or the harbour we specify IP65 or higher.
- Fixings. Stainless steel fixings and sealed glands in place of zinc plated ones that rust in a few winters.
- Siting. Where the layout allows, the charger goes on the more sheltered face of the house, under an eave or in the lee of a porch, without making the cable awkward to reach.

A home charger needs off street parking you are entitled to use, and much of central Fraserburgh is granite terraces and flats that open straight onto the pavement.
Across the pavement
A cable running loose over a public pavement is a trip hazard and we will not fit a charger that relies on one. A proper cross pavement channel needs permission from Aberdeenshire Council as the roads authority. The UK government also offers up to £500 towards a cross pavement solution for homes with only on street parking.
A flat in a shared building
Flat owners and renters with their own parking space can usually have a charger with the freeholder's, factor's or landlord's agreement, and may qualify for the UK grant set out below.

Who can fit it
Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
Yes, a competent electrician can legally install one, but three things separate a charger from an ordinary circuit: grant access, the wiring regulations and the network operator.
Grants need an OZEV installer
The UK chargepoint grants can only be claimed through an installer authorised by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. We are authorised under reference EVHS/WCS14254.

Telling the DNO
SSEN, the distribution network operator for the north east, must be told about a new charger, and on some supplies it wants to assess the load first. We handle that notification for you.

How Amendment 4 changes a Fraserburgh charger install
Amendment 4 to the wiring regulations is the edition every new circuit is certified to from 15 October 2026, and it tightened the rules for outdoor chargers.
- PME supplies in town. Regulation 722.411.4.1 no longer allows the old "not reasonably practicable" exception. An outdoor charger on a PME earth needs an earth electrode, an open PEN device or a voltage monitoring device.
- Rod earthed country supplies. On a TT supply we test the rod and the RCD trip times, and replace a poor rod before the charger goes on.
- DC fault detection. A 6mA DC detecting device is required, inside the charger to BS IEC 62955 or as a Type B RCD.
- No arc fault device needed on a circuit feeding EV charging equipment.

The fuse board
Will my Fraserburgh fuse board take an EV charger?
Often yes. A board with a spare way and modern RCD protection takes the new circuit as it stands, or a small dedicated EV unit sits beside it, like the one in the photo.
An older board with rewireable fuses, no RCD protection or no room left is replaced first, on the same visit, for £750 to £1,000 + VAT for the board work.

Can I get a government grant to install an EV charger in Fraserburgh?
Yes if you rent your home, own a flat, or only have on street parking; no if you own a house with its own driveway.
Renters and flat owners
The OZEV grant covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing one socket, up to £500, until 31 March 2027. You must live in the property, have private off street parking you are entitled to use, and have any landlord or freeholder permission first. You apply online, OZEV says it takes up to 10 working days to assess, and the charger must not be fitted until you are told you are eligible. We then claim the grant and it comes off your bill.
On street parking only
A separate OZEV grant of up to £500 helps owners and renters with only on street parking who install a cross pavement solution, such as a charging channel. Council permission for the pavement work is still needed.
Homeowners and new builds
If you own and live in a house, the flats and renters grant is closed to you. A new home built under the Building (Scotland) Regulations rules that apply from 5 June 2023, where a charger was mandatory, does not qualify either. Home Energy Scotland's domestic charge point funding was closed when we checked its page on 6 October 2026.
Harbour and town businesses

Charging habits
What is the 80/20 rule for EV charging?
The 80/20 rule means keeping a lithium ion car battery between about 20% and 80% for day to day driving, and charging to 100% only before a long run, such as a drive to Aberdeen and back.
Why drivers use it
Sitting at full or near empty for long spells is harder on most batteries than living in the middle. Rapid chargers also slow down sharply above about 80%, so the last fifth is the slowest part of a public stop. Your car maker's handbook comes first, because some battery types are designed to be charged to full.
How a home charger helps
