Consumer unit upgrade to a metal FuseBox board with individual RCBOs
The original consumer unit had two separate switches and no linked main switch, so there was no single action that isolated the whole installation. The internal wiring was overcrowded and the circuits relied on older shared RCD protection, which meant one fault could take out half the flat.

Every domestic job receives a written certificate to BS 7671. There is no Part P in Scotland (Part P is England and Wales only) and there is no "Building Control notification" either. Scotland works on building warrants issued by the council's Building Standards department. A warrant is not needed to rewire an existing house of up to two storeys, but it is needed for flats, maisonettes and any building of three storeys or more. The duty to obtain it sits with the owner. Periodic Inspection & Testing for commercial premises.
Fixed wire testing in Aberdeen city (also called Periodic Inspection and Testing or a commercial EICR) is the regulatory examination of all hard wired electrical installations in a commercial, industrial, or non domestic setting. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, every employer and duty holder must keep electrical installations in a safe condition. Fixed wire testing is the practical means of proving that legal duty has been met.
How often you need a fixed wire test depends on the building:
- Offices and shops: typically every 5 years.
- Restaurants, kitchens, hospitality: typically every 5 years (often shorter on insurer request).
- Industrial premises and workshops: typically every 3 years.
- Construction sites: as short as every 3 months on temporary supplies.
- Petrol stations and CompEx environments: annually (specialist scope).
- HMOs and licensed premises: as defined by the local licensing authority.
Faithful Spark carry out fixed wire testing across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire with City & Guilds 2391-52 (Inspection and Testing) qualifications. We test every circuit, document every reading, and issue a written report graded C1 (immediate danger), C2 (potentially dangerous), C3 (improvement recommended), or FI (further investigation needed).

Electrical Installation Condition Reports for Aberdeen properties.
Under Scotland's Repairing Standard (Housing (Scotland) Act 2006, sections 19A and 19B), every privately rented property must have a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) before a tenancy starts and at intervals of no more than 5 years. The statutory guidance in force since 1 March 2024 also requires at least one 30mA RCD in the main consumer unit, normally covering the socket circuits as a minimum. That does not mean every older board fails. A dual RCD split load board usually complies. What it does mean is that an unprotected rewirable fuse board will be coded, and we will tell you exactly what needs changing and what does not.
Owner occupiers benefit from an EICR before a property purchase, before any major renovation, or as the ten yearly check the IET recommends for a domestic installation (sooner on a change of occupancy). Faithful Spark hold the City & Guilds 2391-52 qualification specifically required for EICR work, and the certificate carries our NICEIC registration number for legal validity.

Full RCBO board upgrades, no split load units.
If your Aberdeen property still runs on an old rewirable fuse board, or a split load consumer unit with shared RCDs, an upgrade is the single most worthwhile electrical investment you can make in your home. A modern full RCBO consumer unit gives every circuit its own individual protection device. If a fault trips one circuit, the rest of the house stays live. No more whole house blackouts because of a faulty kettle.
Faithful Spark only install full RCBO consumer units. We do not fit split load boards. Standard pricing in Aberdeen is £550 to £950 + VAT for a typical 100A domestic upgrade including supply, fit, and BS 7671 certification. EV ready upgrades are £750 to £1,000 + VAT. Bundle a consumer unit upgrade with an EICR for £750 to £1,150 + VAT.
Two honest points other pages tend to blur. BS 7671 has required a non combustible (metal) enclosure on new domestic consumer units since 2016, and Amendment 4:2026, mandatory for all new work from 15 October 2026, keeps that rule. It does not make your existing plastic board a fault, and nothing in the regulations forces you onto RCBOs. We recommend them because of what they do when something goes wrong, not because of a rule that does not exist. Arc fault detection (AFDD) is required by regulation only in high rise flats, HMOs, student blocks and care homes, and recommended elsewhere, so we quote it as an option, not a condition. Faithful Spark Electricians is an NICEIC approved electrical contractor based at 17 Thomson Road, Peterhead, serving Aberdeen city and the wider North East of Scotland. We say that plainly because some Aberdeen electrician pages belong to firms that are not where they claim to be. How do I check an Aberdeen electrician is actually qualified?
Ask for three things and check them yourself. First, a registration with a certification body you can search online (NICEIC, SELECT or NAPIT). Do I need an EICR for my Aberdeen rental property?
Yes. Under Scotland's Repairing Standard, every privately rented property must have a satisfactory EICR before a tenancy starts and at least every 5 years after that. The guidance in force since 1 March 2024 also requires at least one 30mA RCD in the main consumer unit, normally covering the socket circuits. It does not require every circuit to be RCD protected. Landlord EICRs in Aberdeen are £150 to £350 + VAT.
What is the difference between a full RCBO board and a split load consumer unit?
A full RCBO board gives every circuit its own dedicated RCBO (combined RCD and circuit breaker). If a single circuit faults, only that circuit trips. A split load board groups several circuits onto a shared RCD, which means one fault can take down half the house. Faithful Spark only fit full RCBO boards. Pricing in Aberdeen is £550 to £950 + VAT.
Do I need a building warrant for electrical work in Aberdeen?
Sometimes. Scotland does not use Part P or "Building Control notification"; those are England and Wales. Scotland uses building warrants from the council's Building Standards department. You do not need a warrant to rewire an existing house of up to two storeys. You do need one for flats, maisonettes and any building of three storeys or more, which covers a lot of Aberdeen's tenement stock. The owner is responsible for obtaining it. We tell you at quote stage and provide the certificates Aberdeen City Council needs. No warrant never means no standard: every job is certified to BS 7671 regardless.
Is it illegal to do my own electrical work in Scotland?
Not automatically, but it is rarely wise. In Scotland the legal question is whether the work needs a building warrant and whether it meets the Building Standards, and separately whether it complies with BS 7671. Changing a like for like socket does not need a warrant. Adding circuits, altering a consumer unit or any work in a flat can. Insurers and buyers' solicitors increasingly ask for certificates, and only a competent electrician can issue an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate. If you have had DIY work done, an EICR from us will tell you where it stands.
What counts as an electrical emergency, and how long will you take?
Treat these as emergencies: a burning smell from a socket, switch or consumer unit; sparking or scorch marks; an RCD or main switch that will not stay on; a whole property with no power when neighbours have theirs; water coming into contact with electrics. Turn the main switch off if it is safe to do so and call 07304 027013. During working hours we typically reach central Aberdeen in 60 to 90 minutes.
