Aberdeen Property Knowledge

Slate, granite, modern tile. Each roof needs a different solar approach.

Aberdeen's mixed housing stock means there is no one size fits all solar system. The roof construction, the orientation, and the supply all change what is possible and what is wise.

Granite Tenements

Holburn Street, Crown Street, Great Western Road. Often listed or in conservation areas. Solar usually requires planning permission. We advise on Aberdeen City Council process and rear elevation options.

Inter War Stone Houses

Rosemount, Mannofield, Mid Stocket. South or south west facing slate roofs in good condition. Typical 4kWp install slides in under permitted development.

New Build Estates

Bridge of Don, Cove, Kingswells, Countesswells. Modern concrete tile roofs, large unobstructed pitches, pre wired DC space in many properties. The fastest solar installs we do.

Farms & Agri Sheds

Inverurie, Banchory, Insch, rural Aberdeenshire. South facing barn roofs of 200 to 1,000 m². 15kWp to 100kWp systems with strong daytime consumption profile and short payback.

Does Solar Work in Aberdeen?

Yes. Here is the climate data and what it actually means.

Aberdeen receives around 1,400 hours of usable sunlight per year. That is less than London (around 1,600 hours) and considerably less than the south coast (1,800+ hours), but it is comfortably enough to make solar PV financially worthwhile, particularly given Scotland's high electricity prices and the strength of the Smart Export Guarantee in 2026.

A well sized 4kWp south facing array in Aberdeen typically generates 2,400 to 2,800 kWh per year. The same system in London would produce 3,000 to 3,400 kWh. The Aberdeen figure is roughly 80% of the London figure. Combined with the export price advantage (Aberdeenshire homes regularly access the same Octopus Outgoing 14.5p export tariff as homes anywhere else in the UK), the net financial outcome is competitive with much sunnier parts of the country.

The myth that "solar does not work in Scotland" comes from the era when export rates were 5p per kWh and import rates were 12p, with rebates that did not reflect the avoided cost of generation. Both of those numbers have roughly doubled in the past five years. The arithmetic that did not work in 2018 works comfortably in 2026.

3kWp Entry System

Smaller Aberdeen homes, 2 bedroom flats, retired couples.

The 3kWp entry tier suits smaller properties: 2 bedroom semi detached, mid terrace flats with their own roof in Aberdeen suburbs, or retired homeowners with lower consumption who simply want to lock in 25 years of partial bill protection.

System specification:

  • 8 to 10 panels at 400 watts each, on a single south or south west facing roof slope.
  • String inverter (SolarEdge or GivEnergy) sized at 3kW to 4kW.
  • Optional 5kWh battery from £3,500 fitted as an upgrade.
  • Generates around 2,400 kWh per year in Aberdeen, average.
  • Typical self consumption 35% to 45% without battery, 60%+ with battery.

Indicative annual return at 24p import, 14.5p export:

  • Self consumed 950 kWh at 24p = £228
  • Exported 1,450 kWh at 14.5p = £210.25
  • Total annual benefit: around £438 (round £440)

Fully installed price £7,000 to £8,500 with 0% VAT. Payback typically 16 to 19 years, with continued generation for the remaining 15 to 20 years of the panel's warranty period.

4kWp + 10kWh Battery

The Aberdeen sweet spot. Most popular system we install.

The 4kWp solar plus 10kWh battery system is the most popular combination we install across Aberdeen. It hits the right financial point for a typical 3 bedroom family home that consumes 3,000 to 4,500 kWh per year and has at least one EV or plans to add one.

System specification:

  • 10 to 12 panels at 400 watts each.
  • Hybrid inverter rated 5kW to 6kW (oversized to allow battery and future expansion).
  • 10kWh battery from Tesla Powerwall 3, GivEnergy, or SolarEdge.
  • Generates around 3,000 kWh per year in Aberdeen, average.
  • Self consumption rises to 65% to 80% with the battery.
  • Smart tariff aware: pairs with Octopus Agile or Intelligent Octopus.

Indicative annual return at 24p import, 14.5p export:

  • Self consumed (with battery) 1,900 kWh at 24p = £456
  • Exported 1,100 kWh at 14.5p = £159.50
  • Total annual benefit: around £616 (round £620)

Fully installed price £10,000 to £12,000 with 0% VAT. Payback typically 13 to 16 years, faster if EV charging and heat pump are added later because the surplus is consumed in the house rather than exported.

6kWp+ Premium

Larger families, EV plus heat pump, future ready.

The 6kWp+ premium tier suits 4 bedroom detached homes in Westhill, Kingswells, Bridge of Don, Cove. Households with two EVs, an air source heat pump on order, or simply higher than average consumption (5,000 to 8,000 kWh per year).

System specification:

  • 15 to 18 panels at 400 watts each, often across two roof slopes.
  • Hybrid inverter rated 8kW.
  • 10kWh to 15kWh battery, expandable.
  • Generates around 4,500 kWh per year in Aberdeen, average.
  • Pairs with Zappi EV charger for solar surplus diversion.
  • Three phase supply optional (rural Westhill homes), increases export capacity.

Fully installed price £12,000 to £15,000 with 0% VAT. Payback typically 11 to 14 years on a family home with high daytime consumption (heat pump, EV charging, two adults working from home some days).

For a household that adds an EV during the lifetime of the system, the practical effect is even stronger: every kWh of solar surplus diverted into the car is worth 24p (the avoided import cost) rather than 14.5p (export to grid). On a 4,500 kWh per year system with even half of that going to EV charging, the difference is around £215 per year extra benefit compared with just exporting.

Smart Export Guarantee

Octopus Outgoing 14.5p and how SEG actually pays.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is the UK government scheme that requires every licensed electricity supplier to pay solar generators for surplus electricity exported to the grid. Rates from major UK suppliers in 2026 range from approximately 5p to 15p per kWh, with leading tariffs such as Octopus Outgoing currently paying around 14.5p per kWh.

Eligibility requires:

  • MCS certified installation (Faithful Spark handles this).
  • An MCS certificate issued at completion.
  • A smart meter capable of half hourly export readings.
  • A SEG application submitted to your chosen supplier.

The customer chooses the SEG supplier (does not have to be the same supplier as the home import tariff). Octopus Outgoing currently pays the highest fixed SEG rate at 14.5p per kWh and is the best choice for Aberdeen homes in 2026. Smart export tariffs like Octopus Outgoing Agile pay variable rates that occasionally peak above 30p per kWh on summer afternoons, but require a smart meter and a more active engagement with the tariff.

Practical SEG income for typical Aberdeen homes:

  • 3kWp system with no battery: 1,200 to 1,600 kWh exported per year, £175 to £230 SEG income.
  • 4kWp system with 10kWh battery: 800 to 1,200 kWh exported, £115 to £175 SEG income (lower because more consumed at home).
  • 6kWp system with 10kWh battery: 1,500 to 2,200 kWh exported, £215 to £320 SEG income.

Solar + EV Charger

Why pairing solar with a Zappi changes the return profile.

The economic case for solar in Aberdeen strengthens significantly when paired with an EV charger. The reason is simple: surplus solar exported to the grid pays 14.5p per kWh on Octopus Outgoing. Surplus solar diverted into a car you would otherwise have charged from the grid saves the avoided import cost, which is 24p to 27.2p per kWh on Octopus tariffs in 2026.

The myenergi Zappi is the EV charger of choice for this setup. It has three charging modes:

  • Fast. Full grid power, charge at 7.4kW regardless of solar.
  • Eco. Mix of solar and grid, top up from grid only when solar is insufficient.
  • Eco+. Solar surplus only. Charger pauses if the sun goes in, resumes when it comes out.

On a sunny Aberdeen Saturday in May, an Eco+ Zappi will put 20 to 30 kWh of free solar electricity into the EV between 10am and 4pm. The customer pays nothing for this energy. Combined with smart overnight charging on Octopus Intelligent (around 7p per kWh), Aberdeen drivers regularly cut annual EV fuel cost from £1,500+ on petrol to under £150 on electricity.

Faithful Spark holds the City & Guilds Level 3 EV Charging qualification (610/4640/1) in addition to the Solar PV and Battery qualifications, so the entire stack (panels, inverter, battery, EV charger) is designed and installed by one qualified contractor.

Solar PV plus EV charger combined installation in an Aberdeen home
Commercial & Agricultural Solar

15kWp through 100kWp business installations.

Business solar in Aberdeenshire has a much faster payback than domestic. The reasons: commercial electricity is more expensive (28p to 32p per kWh in 2026), commercial premises typically consume during the day when the sun is generating, the Annual Investment Allowance gives 100% tax relief in year one, and farm sheds often have south facing roofs of 200 to 1,000 square metres with no shading and no planning issues.

Indicative pricing (commercial installs are quoted with + VAT, 0% rate only applies to residential):

  • 15kWp system: £14,000 to £18,000 + VAT installed.
  • 25kWp system: £20,000 to £27,000 + VAT installed.
  • 50kWp system: £35,000 to £45,000 + VAT installed.
  • 100kWp system: £60,000 to £80,000 + VAT installed.

Typical payback for an Aberdeenshire farm with high daytime consumption is 3 to 6 years, dramatically faster than residential. The Annual Investment Allowance lets a business in the 25% corporation tax band claim back 25% of the system cost in the year of installation. For a sole trader or partnership in the 40% income tax band, the allowance is worth 40% of the system cost in year one.

We have completed installs from 15kWp barn roofs in Banchory through to 50kWp warehouse arrays in Tullos. Initial survey and feasibility report typically delivered within 5 working days.

0% VAT Until March 2027

The zero rate that makes Aberdeen solar in 2026 unusually good value.

Residential solar PV, residential battery storage, and ground source heat pumps are zero rated for VAT in the UK until at least March 2027. This is a temporary policy introduced in 2022 and extended through the 2023 and 2024 budgets. It was renewed in the most recent budget and applies to qualifying residential installs only.

The saving is material. On a £7,000 system, the standard 20% VAT rate would add £1,400 to the cost. The 0% rate means the customer pays £7,000 rather than £8,400. Scaled to a 6kWp+ battery system at £12,000 to £15,000, the VAT saving is £2,400 to £3,000.

The zero rate applies automatically through us as an MCS certified installer. The customer never has to claim it back, never has to apply for it separately, and never has to invoice HMRC. Faithful Spark applies the zero rate at the point of quote.

The exceptions: commercial solar (with or without VAT registered customer), agricultural solar without a residential dwelling, and battery only retrofits to non residential supplies. For these we quote with the standard 20% VAT separately, shown clearly on every invoice.

Why It Has To Be an MCS Installer

Without MCS, there is no Smart Export Guarantee.

MCS (the Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK quality assurance body for small scale renewables. Every grid connected solar PV installation must be MCS registered to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee. Choose a non MCS installer and you cannot sell your surplus solar electricity to the grid. That single fact erases £150 to £400 per year from the financial case.

City & Guilds Level 3 in Solar PV (610/4841/0) is the underlying technical qualification. NICEIC Approved Contractor is the wider electrical safety credential. MCS is the renewables specific scheme. Faithful Spark holds all three, the certificates are public, and we will show them to any customer who asks.

Solar Aberdeen FAQs

Common questions about solar in Aberdeen.

Don't see your question? Call 07304 027013 or email us. We come back the same business day.

Does solar actually work in Aberdeen?

Yes. Aberdeen receives around 1,400 hours of usable sun per year. A 4kWp south facing array typically generates 2,400 to 2,800 kWh annually. At 24p import savings and 14.5p export, that delivers around £500 to £700 per year combined bill saving and export income on a typical Aberdeen home.

How much does solar cost in Aberdeen?

3kWp to 4kWp solar only systems start at £7,000 with 0% VAT applied. The most popular Aberdeen install (4kWp plus 10kWh battery) is £10,000 to £12,000. Premium 6kWp+ with battery is £12,000 to £15,000. All residential prices are quoted at 0% VAT until at least March 2027.

How long does a solar install take?

A typical 4kWp residential install completes in 1 to 2 days on site. Scaffold up day 1, panels and DC wiring complete by end of day 1 or early day 2, inverter and battery commissioned, electrical sign off by end of day 2. MCS certificate issued within 10 working days.

What is the SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) and how much does it pay?

The SEG is the UK government scheme that pays you for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid. Octopus Outgoing pays 14.5p per kWh in 2026, the highest fixed rate. SEG income for typical Aberdeen homes is £150 to £400 per year depending on system size and self consumption.

Do I need planning permission for solar in Aberdeen?

Most Aberdeen residential solar installs are permitted development and do not need planning permission. Conservation areas (parts of AB10 and AB11), listed buildings, and rear elevations close to a highway sometimes require Aberdeen City Council planning consent. We assess this on the design survey and advise where formal consent is needed.

What is the payback period for solar in Aberdeen?

A typical 4kWp plus 10kWh battery install at £10,000 to £12,000 pays back in 13 to 16 years on a household consuming 3,500 kWh per year. Payback is faster (10 to 13 years) for households with EV charging, heat pump, or higher daytime consumption. Panel performance warranty runs 25 years, so the system continues to generate for 9 to 15 years beyond payback.

Can I add a battery to existing solar?

Yes. We retrofit batteries to existing solar systems regularly. A 10kWh GivEnergy battery starts at £4,000 fitted to your existing inverter or paired with a hybrid inverter upgrade. Tesla Powerwall 3 retrofits from £9,000 to £12,000 including hybrid inverter functionality.

Is 0% VAT really applied automatically?

Yes. Faithful Spark applies the 0% VAT zero rate automatically on every qualifying residential solar and battery quote. You see the zero rate on the invoice. The customer never has to claim it back, never has to apply separately. The rate is in place until at least March 2027.

Can I pair solar with an EV charger?

Yes. The myenergi Zappi is the standout charger for solar surplus diversion. Steven holds the City & Guilds Level 3 EV Charging qualification (610/4640/1) in addition to the Solar PV and Battery qualifications, so we design and install the whole stack end to end.

Which Aberdeen postcodes do you cover for solar?

We cover the full city from AB10 through AB25, plus AB31 (Banchory), AB32 (Westhill), and into rural Aberdeenshire (Ellon, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Banchory, Insch, Stonehaven). No travel surcharge on Aberdeen city postcodes. Outlying villages confirmed by phone.
