What "smart" actually means, and why solar ready is a bonus, not a rule.
There is a lot of loose talk online about what a home charger has to be. Here is the plain version. Since 30 June 2022, every new home charger sold in Great Britain must be smart by law, under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. Smart means the charger can schedule charging, defaults to off peak times, and adds a small randomised start delay so the grid is not hit all at once. Every unit we fit meets that standard, because it has to.
Solar ready is different. That is a feature of the units we choose, not something the law demands. Every charger we fit is smart, as the law requires, and solar ready, so it can charge from your own panels when you add them. If you have no solar today, the charger still works perfectly on a normal supply and a cheap overnight tariff. If you add panels later, a Zappi or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro can divert surplus generation straight into the car instead of selling it back cheaply.
So the honest summary for a Kingswells driveway: you are buying a smart charger because that is the only kind sold now, and ours happen to be solar ready too, which keeps your options open for the new build roofs around Countesswells that lend themselves well to panels.
