Home Charging in Kingswells

The driveway you already have is what makes this easy.

Kingswells sits about five to six miles west of Aberdeen city centre, north of the A944 and east of Westhill across the AWPR bypass that opened in 2019. Around 5,000 people live here, most of them in the detached and semi family homes that went up from the 1980s onward, with newer estates at Countesswells, The Reserve at Eden and Bellfield View still filling out. Almost every one of those homes has its own private driveway or garage. That single fact is why home EV charging is so much simpler here than in inner city Aberdeen: there is no pavement to cross, no permit to chase, just a wall, a supply and a tidy 7.4kW unit. Steven Watt fits every charger himself.

  • Off street parking at almost every Kingswells home
  • Smart by law and solar ready, ready for panels later
  • We notify the DNO through the ENA process for you
  • Honest "from" price, extras quoted after the free survey
  • NICEIC Approved Contractor, £2 million public liability

Smart and Solar Ready, Explained

What "smart" actually means, and why solar ready is a bonus, not a rule.

There is a lot of loose talk online about what a home charger has to be. Here is the plain version. Since 30 June 2022, every new home charger sold in Great Britain must be smart by law, under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. Smart means the charger can schedule charging, defaults to off peak times, and adds a small randomised start delay so the grid is not hit all at once. Every unit we fit meets that standard, because it has to.

Solar ready is different. That is a feature of the units we choose, not something the law demands. Every charger we fit is smart, as the law requires, and solar ready, so it can charge from your own panels when you add them. If you have no solar today, the charger still works perfectly on a normal supply and a cheap overnight tariff. If you add panels later, a Zappi or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro can divert surplus generation straight into the car instead of selling it back cheaply.

So the honest summary for a Kingswells driveway: you are buying a smart charger because that is the only kind sold now, and ours happen to be solar ready too, which keeps your options open for the new build roofs around Countesswells that lend themselves well to panels.

The DNO Notification

The paperwork most installers forget, handled by us.

A 7.4kW charger draws up to 32A, which is a meaningful extra load on a domestic supply. The Distribution Network Operator, SSEN in the Kingswells area, has to be told about it. This is the DNO notification, made through the Energy Networks Association process. Get it wrong and you risk an overloaded supply on a street where several neighbours may also be charging.

We handle this for you. In most cases we apply before the install. Where the supply is tighter, we fit load management so the charger automatically eases back when the house is drawing heavily, keeping you inside your supply capacity without you ever noticing. Either way, the form filling is ours, not yours.

It is a small thing that says a lot about how a job is done. Plenty of cut price installs skip it. On a maturing estate like Kingswells, where the original supplies were sized for 1980s households, doing the notification properly is exactly the sort of detail that protects you and your neighbours.

Cable Runs and the Consumer Unit

Where the "from" price can move, and where it does not.

An EV charger is a dedicated circuit run from your consumer unit, protected by the correct RCBO or RCD, out to a weatherproof unit on an external wall by the driveway. For most Kingswells homes the run from the board to the chosen charger position is comfortably inside 15 metres, which is why our packages quote that as standard.

Three things can move the price, and we name them up front so the "from" figure stays honest:

  • A cable run over 15 metres. Detached homes with a board at the far side of the house, or a charger wanted at the bottom of a long drive, may need extra cable and labour. Quoted after the survey.
  • A consumer unit upgrade. Many 1990s and 2000s Kingswells boards take a new 32A RCBO without trouble. An older or full board may need replacing at £550 to £950 + VAT, only if your supply genuinely needs it.
  • An earthing upgrade. Occasionally the existing earthing arrangement needs improving to meet BS 7671 for an EV circuit. Uncommon, but quoted plainly if found.

The survey exists so there are no surprises. You see the route, the board, and the price for your home before any work begins.

Kingswells Property Knowledge

Four kinds of Kingswells home, one tidy charger on each.

Kingswells is mostly modern brick and render, not the granite of older Aberdeen, so the calls are rarely about awkward walls. The build era still tells us what is behind the consumer unit, which is what decides how smooth the install is.

1980s Oil Boom Estates

The first family homes built as the oil industry grew, now around 40 years old. Driveways are generous, but the original board often needs a 32A RCBO added before the charger goes on. We check that on the survey.

1990s & 2000s Family Homes

Detached and semi homes with split load boards. Usually able to take the EV circuit without a board swap, so these are some of the quickest Kingswells installs we do.

New Build Plots

Countesswells, The Reserve at Eden and Bellfield View. Modern RCBO boards, sometimes pre wired for an EV point, often with a roof that suits solar. The natural home for a solar ready Zappi or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro.

Bungalows & Garages

Single storey homes and the many Kingswells properties with an integral or detached garage. A garage gives a neat, sheltered spot to mount the unit and run the cable cleanly out of sight.

From Survey to First Charge

Four steps, booked around a Prime Four working day.

Kingswells is a commuter suburb, so we keep the process tight: survey, paperwork, install, handover, with the price agreed before anyone lifts a tool.

We pair the charger to your phone, run the first charge with you watching, hand over the electrical installation certificate and confirm the 3 year warranty.

The Grant, Told Straight

Most Kingswells homeowners are not eligible, and we will say so.

From 1 April 2026 the EV chargepoint grant is worth £500 per socket, but it is aimed at renters and flat owners who have private off street parking and their landlord or freeholder's permission. It is funded to 31 March 2027. The typical Kingswells picture, an owner occupier with a private driveway, does not qualify, and we would rather tell you that now than dangle a discount that never arrives.

If you rent in Kingswells, or own a flat with an allocated off street space, you may well be able to claim. The Scotland only Energy Saving Trust home charger funding is restricted to rural and island residents under an income cap and is currently closed, so we do not promise it. We will check your specific situation honestly on the survey.

Kingswells EV FAQs

Questions Kingswells drivers ask before booking.

Don't see your question? Call 07304 027013 or use our contact form and we will come back the same business day.

How much is an EV charger installed in Kingswells?

A basic 7.4kW smart charger starts from £900 + VAT fitted, with a cable run up to 15 metres on a single phase supply. Our smart package with an Ohme Home Pro or TeltoCharge is from £995 + VAT, and the premium solar ready package with a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro or myenergi Zappi is from £1,195 + VAT. Extras like a longer cable run or a consumer unit upgrade are quoted after the free survey.

Do I need planning permission or a permit for my Kingswells driveway?

No. Because almost every Kingswells home has its own off street driveway or garage, the charger goes on your own wall and the cable never crosses a public pavement. That avoids the permit process that inner city Aberdeen tenement streets face. A standard home charger on your own property does not need planning permission.

Will you handle the DNO notification for me?

Yes. A 7.4kW charger draws up to 32A, so the Distribution Network Operator, SSEN here, must be notified through the Energy Networks Association process. We do that paperwork for you, usually before the install. Where a supply is tighter we fit load management so the charger eases back automatically and you stay within capacity.

My home is a 1980s Kingswells estate house. Is my fuseboard up to it?

Often the original board just needs a 32A RCBO added, which we include in the standard quote. Some older boards need replacing at £550 to £950 + VAT, but only if your supply genuinely requires it. We confirm exactly what your board needs on the free survey, before any work starts, so the price stays honest.

I am buying in Countesswells. Should I get a solar ready charger?

It is worth considering. New build roofs around Countesswells and The Reserve at Eden suit solar well, and a solar ready unit like the Zappi or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro can divert surplus generation into the car once panels are added. If you have no solar yet the charger still works fully on a normal supply and a cheap overnight tariff, so you lose nothing by keeping the option open.

Can I get the EV charger grant as a Kingswells homeowner?

Usually not. The £500 per socket grant from 1 April 2026 is for renters and flat owners with private off street parking and landlord or freeholder permission, not owner occupiers with a driveway. If you rent or own a flat with an allocated space you may qualify, and we will check honestly on the survey rather than promise a discount that does not apply.
