Your Local Northfield EV Installer

Straight answers about charging at home in Northfield.

Northfield is a large post war estate in the north west of Aberdeen, a mix of 1950s semis, four in a block flats and Right to Buy homes, with Cummings Park, Heathryfold and Mastrick alongside. Plenty of homes here have a driveway or allocated off street parking, which is all you need for a tidy home charger, while some terraces and flats do not, and we will tell you honestly which group you are in. Every charger we fit is smart, as the law requires, and solar ready. We also know this is a value conscious area, so our pricing is in the open, and where the £500 grant applies, for renters and flat owners, we handle it. Steven Watt leads every Northfield install himself.

  • Smart 7.4kW chargers, the legal standard for new installs
  • Honest advice on whether your parking suits a charger
  • The £500 grant handled for eligible renters and flat owners
  • DNO and ENA notification handled for you

What You Get in Northfield

An honest install, done once and done right.

An EV charger is a simple idea with a few details that matter. Here is what every Northfield install includes.

Free Site Survey

We check the supply, the consumer unit, the earthing and the parking before quoting, so the from price is honest.

Smart by Law

Every charger we fit is smart, as the Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021 require, with scheduling and off peak charging built in.

Grant Handled

If you rent or own a flat with private parking, the £500 grant applies, and we complete the paperwork for you.

DNO Handled

Where the network operator needs notifying through the ENA process, we do it for you. No forms, no chasing SP Energy Networks.

Tidy Cable Routing

The cable runs along the line of the house, not strung across the front. We take pride in a clean, discreet finish.

NICEIC Certified

Every install is tested and certified on completion, carrying our NICEIC registration, so it is right for resale and insurance.

Northfield Home Types

Where a home charger fits, and where it does not.

The honest truth is that a home charger needs your own off street parking. Here is how that plays out across Northfield.

1950s Semis with Driveways

The most common charger home here. A short cable run from the board to the drive, with a board check first on the older fuse boards.

Flats with Allocated Parking

If you own or rent a flat with a private space, a charger is often possible, and this is exactly where the £500 grant applies.

Right to Buy Homes

Owner occupied ex council homes, usually with a driveway. A straightforward install once the board is confirmed as ready.

Terraces with On Street Parking

If you only have on street parking, a home charger is not suitable, and we will say so. The ChargePlace Scotland public network is the better route.

The Install Process

Four steps, from survey to a charged car.

We keep it simple and predictable, and most installs are done in a single visit on the day.

  1. 01

    Free Survey

We check the parking, the supply, the board and the cable route, and confirm the right charger and a fixed price in writing.

  2. 02

    Paperwork Handled

We handle the DNO and ENA notification, and the £500 grant application where you are eligible.

  3. 03

    Tidy Install

Steven fits the charger on a dedicated RCBO protected circuit, routes the cable neatly, and sets up the app.

  4. 04

    Tested & Certified

The install is tested and certified to BS 7671, and you drive away charging. Most installs take a few hours.

Northfield EV Charger Pricing

Two clear packages, plus an honest £900 starting point.

Most local installers hide the price. Here are ours, in the open, which matters in a value conscious area. Every figure is for a standard install with a cable run up to 15 metres, confirmed after the free survey.

The Grant Truth

In Northfield, the £500 grant actually helps a lot of people.

On the affluent suburbs the EV grant is a bit of a red herring, because most owners are not eligible. Northfield is different. With a large number of private rentals and flats, the £500 per socket grant, live from 1 April 2026 and funded to 31 March 2027, is genuinely useful here. It is for renters and flat owners who have private off street parking and their landlord or freeholder's permission.

If that is you, we will not just mention it and move on, we will complete the application for you, including the freeholder or landlord consent side. The grant comes off the price, so a smart charger becomes a good deal more affordable.

  • £500 per socket, from 1 April 2026, funded to 31 March 2027.
  • For renters and flat owners with private off street parking.
  • Needs landlord or freeholder permission, which we help arrange.
  • We complete the application on your behalf.

No Driveway?

If your parking is on the street, here is the honest answer.

We will always tell you the truth, even when it loses us a job. A home EV charger needs your own private off street parking, a driveway or an allocated space. Running a cable across a public pavement to a car parked on the street is not safe or allowed, so if that is your situation, a home charger is not the answer.

The better route is the public network. ChargePlace Scotland has charge points across the city, and there is public charging near Northfield, so you can still run an electric car without a charger at home. If your circumstances change, a new driveway, a move, a flat with a space, we are a phone call away.

  • A home charger needs private off street parking, no exceptions.
  • Trailing a cable across a pavement is not permitted.
  • ChargePlace Scotland and other public points are the alternative.

Smart vs Solar Ready

What smart means, and why solar ready is a bonus.

Here is the straight version. Smart is the legal requirement. Under the Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021, every new home charger must be smart, which means scheduling, default off peak charging, and a small randomised start delay to protect the grid. Charging off peak on the right tariff is also where the real savings are, which matters when you are watching the bills.

Solar ready is a product feature, not a legal rule. It means the charger can use surplus power from your own solar panels rather than exporting it. A myenergi Zappi does this natively, and the Ohme Home Pro and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro support solar too. Every charger we fit is both smart and solar ready.

  • Smart, as the Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021 require.
  • Off peak charging is where the running cost savings are.
  • Solar ready as a feature, for if you add panels later.

Do I Need an Upgrade?

When the consumer unit needs sorting first.

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit, properly protected, and a supply that can carry it. Many Northfield homes are on older boards, and a 1950s consumer unit with no spare way or no RCD protection often needs sorting before the charger goes on. We check this at the free survey, so there are no surprises on install day.

Where an upgrade is needed, we quote it plainly, and we can usually do the board and the charger in the same visit. A full RCBO consumer unit is from £550, up to £950 + VAT depending on circuit count. If the board is due anyway, doing both together saves a second visit.

FAQs

Questions Northfield drivers ask before booking.

Don't see your question? Call 07304 027013 or get in touch and we will come back inside an hour during business hours.

How much does EV charger installation cost in Northfield?

From £900 + VAT for a 7.4kW smart unit with a cable run up to 15 metres. The Smart package with an Ohme Home Pro or TeltoCharge is from £995 + VAT, and the Premium solar ready package with a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro or myenergi Zappi is from £1,195 + VAT. If you are eligible for the £500 grant, that comes off the price. A board upgrade, if needed, is from £550 + VAT.

Am I eligible for the £500 EV charger grant?

The grant is £500 per socket, from 1 April 2026 and funded to 31 March 2027, for renters and flat owners with private off street parking and the landlord or freeholder's permission. Northfield has a lot of rentals and flats, so it applies to many people here. We complete the application for you where you qualify.

Can I get an EV charger if I do not have a driveway?

No. A home charger needs your own private off street parking, a driveway or an allocated space. We cannot run a cable across a public pavement. If you only have on street parking, the ChargePlace Scotland public network is the right option, and there is public charging near Northfield.

Does my new home EV charger have to be smart?

Yes, by law. The Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021 require every new home charger to be smart, with scheduling and default off peak charging. Charging off peak on the right tariff is also where the running cost savings are. Every charger we fit meets the rule.

Will I need a consumer unit upgrade?

Possibly, as many Northfield homes are on older boards. The charger needs its own dedicated, properly protected 32A circuit, and a 1950s board with no spare way or no RCD protection may need upgrading first. We confirm this at the free survey and can do the board and charger in one visit, with a board from £550 + VAT.

How long does the installation take?

Most Northfield installs are done in a few hours on the day. From your first call, allow a week or two for the free survey, any DNO notification, the grant application where it applies, and scheduling, all of which we handle for you.
