Your Ellon EV Charger Specialist

The right charger for the Aberdeen commute.

Faithful Spark Electricians is your local City & Guilds Level 3 qualified EV charger installer, covering Ellon and the wider AB41 postcode area. Ellon's housing stock is largely modern thanks to the Castle Park, Riverside, and Tannery Walk developments along the River Ythan, which makes EV charger installation here unusually fast: most new build estates already have a consumer unit ready for a 32 amp RCBO and the cable run is short.

Every install is carried out personally by Steven Watt, who holds the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations (610/4640/1), awarded 3 March 2026, plus Level 3 awards for solar PV and battery storage. The same engineer designs the install, notifies SSEN, fits the unit, signs off the test certificate, and pairs your phone to the charger before leaving site. No call centres, no chasers, no upsells.

Most Ellon customers are commuters working in Aberdeen or Peterhead with daytime away from home, which means overnight charging on Octopus Intelligent or Octopus Go is the ideal pattern. A 7.4kW home charger comfortably adds 200 to 300 miles between 11pm and 6am at the cheap rate (around 7p per kWh), enough for a full week of commuting.

  • C&G Level 3 EV Charging Installation (610/4640/1), awarded 3 March 2026
  • OZEV £350 grant available, we apply on your behalf
  • Castle Park, Riverside, Tannery Walk estate ready
  • Octopus Intelligent and Octopus Go tariff aware
  • Solar plus Zappi compatible for future expansion
  • Digital electrical installation certificate at completion

What an EV Charger Install Involves

Electric vehicle chargepoint installation explained in plain English.

A home EV charger is a dedicated electrical installation that delivers between 3.6kW and 22kW directly to your vehicle through a hard wired chargepoint. Almost all UK home installs are 7.4kW on a single phase supply, since that is the maximum a typical Ellon domestic supply can deliver without an upgrade. Faster 11kW and 22kW units require a three phase supply, which is much more common in commercial premises and rural AB41 farmhouses around Pitmedden, Methlick, and Tarves.

The chargepoint connects to your consumer unit through a dedicated circuit protected by either a Type A or Type B RCD. The cable run between the consumer unit and the charger is usually 5 to 15 metres for a standard install. Longer runs are possible and cost a little more for additional cable and labour. The charger itself sits in a weatherproof IP54 or higher rated enclosure on an external wall, typically by the driveway.

An EV charger install is not a simple plug in job. It is a dedicated electrical installation under BS 7671 (18th Edition), and it must be notified to the DNO (SSEN in the Ellon area) before commissioning. The wrong unit, the wrong RCD type, or a missed notification creates a real safety risk and can invalidate your home insurance.

New Build Estate Installs

Castle Park, Riverside, Tannery Walk. The fastest installs in AB41.

The new build estates that have expanded Ellon over the past 15 years are the most install ready properties we encounter in Aberdeenshire. The consumer units installed by mainstream Scottish house builders since around 2017 are typically full RCBO boards from Hager, MK, or Crabtree, with a free way ready for the additional 32 amp circuit an EV charger requires. The cable run from the consumer unit (usually in the utility room or under the stairs) to the driveway is typically only 6 to 10 metres.

What this means in practice for a Castle Park or Riverside driveway:

  • Half day install. Most new build EV installs in Ellon take 3 to 4 hours total. We arrive at 9am, the customer is charging by 1pm.
  • No consumer unit upgrade needed. The board is ready as is, just an additional RCBO and a new circuit.
  • Tidy cable route. Usually through a single internal wall to a weatherproof enclosure mounted by the garage door or driveway corner.
  • Garage power often pre wired. Some Castle Park homes have a free socket circuit in the garage which we re purpose for the EV install.
  • Same day SSEN notification. No need for a survey delay, supply capacity is known from the build documents.

The most common charger choices for Ellon new build estates are the Ohme Home Pro (for Octopus Intelligent customers, the cheapest overnight commute), the Zappi (for households planning to add solar later, common in south facing Castle Park properties), and the Hypervolt Pro 3 (premium tethered for households who want the cleanest looking installed unit).

The Aberdeen Commuter Setup

Octopus Intelligent, overnight charging, and the £1,400 a year saving.

The single biggest reason Ellon households are switching to electric is the commute. Ellon to Aberdeen is around 16 miles each way, Ellon to Peterhead around 18 miles each way. A typical Ellon EV driver does between 8,000 and 14,000 miles per year, almost all of it predictable, daytime away from home. That is the ideal pattern for overnight EV charging on a smart tariff.

The arithmetic that drives the decision:

  • Petrol or diesel car, 10,000 miles per year. At 45 miles per gallon and £1.45 a litre, the annual fuel cost is around £1,460.
  • Same 10,000 miles on Octopus Go, 7p per kWh overnight. At 3.5 miles per kWh average, the same year costs around £200 in electricity, exclusively at the cheap rate.
  • Net saving: roughly £1,260 per year. The charger itself pays for itself in 9 to 12 months of commute fuel savings.

The two main smart tariffs we see in Ellon homes:

  • Octopus Go. 7p per kWh between 12:30am and 5:30am every night, standard rate the rest of the day. Simple, predictable, suits most Ellon commuters who plug in around 6pm.
  • Octopus Intelligent. The charger talks directly to Octopus. The customer sets "ready by 7am with X% charge" in the app, and Octopus schedules the cheap charging in 30 minute blocks across the cheapest half hours each night. Slightly cheaper on average than Octopus Go.

We will discuss which tariff suits your usage during the survey and pair the right charger to it. Ohme Home Pro is the standout choice for Octopus Intelligent customers; Zappi works with Octopus Go and adds solar surplus diversion when you add panels later.

Rural AB41 Properties

Rural EV charging across Pitmedden, Methlick, Tarves, Udny, Foveran.

Rural AB41 properties have different considerations from the town centre new build estates. Older Aberdeenshire farmhouses around Pitmedden, Methlick, Tarves, and Udny often have overhead supplies from SSEN, longer service cable runs from the main fuse, and sometimes a three phase supply already present (especially on working farms or smallholdings with workshop loads).

  • Three phase availability. Many rural Pitmedden and Methlick farmhouses still have three phase supplies. This unlocks 22kW EV charging, which charges most EVs from low to full in under 3 hours.
  • Overhead supply terminations. Some properties have overhead SSEN supplies that drop to a service head on a barn or outbuilding. These sometimes need termination work before EV charging is added safely.
  • Longer cable runs. Driveways at rural properties are often 30 to 50 metres long. We quote separately for cable runs above 15 metres, typically adding £75 to £150 + VAT for each additional 10 metres.
  • Solar synergy. Rural AB41 properties usually have unshaded south facing roof space, which makes solar plus battery plus Zappi a strong economic case. The whole stack designed and installed by one qualified contractor.

For rural installs we strongly recommend a site visit rather than a photo survey, because the supply termination is often the biggest unknown. No additional travel charge from Ellon to any of the surrounding AB41 villages.

Workplace & Retail Charging

Workplace Charging Scheme installs for Ellon businesses.

Ellon's commercial profile is driven by the retail park (Asda, Tesco, Mango Pet Foods, Costa, Greggs), the Ellon Business Centre, and the surrounding agricultural and oil and gas service operations. The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) gives eligible employers up to £350 per socket toward installation, capped at 40 sockets per business.

The technical requirements step up sharply for commercial installs. Typical scope:

  • Three phase supply. Required for any unit over 7.4kW. Often present in Ellon commercial premises. May need SSEN connection upgrade if not.
  • Dynamic load balancing. Software that throttles each charger so the total never exceeds your supply capacity.
  • RFID or app authentication. Prevents unauthorised use, tracks who charged what for billing or HMRC reporting.
  • OCPP back office. Open Charge Point Protocol for billing, reporting, and access control.
  • WCS voucher submission. We complete and submit the WCS application on your behalf.

Pricing for a small commercial install (2 to 4 chargepoints) typically falls between £4,500 to £6,500 + VAT before the WCS grant. The retail park car parks at the Ellon Tesco and Asda are popular destinations for visiting EV drivers, which makes a small public charge offer a useful marketing draw for local businesses.

Commercial electrical installation with EV chargers in Ellon
Solar + EV Charger

Pairing Ellon solar with a Zappi.

Ellon's new build estates have an unusual concentration of south facing detached homes with unshaded roof space, which makes solar PV plus battery plus Zappi a particularly strong combination. Surplus solar exported to the grid earns 14.5p per kWh on Octopus Outgoing, but the same surplus diverted into your car saves you the avoided import value of 24p per kWh, which is a 65% greater financial value.

The myenergi Zappi has three charging modes:

  • Fast. Full grid power, charge at 7.4kW regardless of solar.
  • Eco. Mix of solar and grid, top up from grid only when solar is insufficient.
  • Eco+. Solar surplus only. Charger pauses if the sun goes in, resumes when it comes out.

On a sunny Ellon Saturday in May, an Eco+ Zappi can put 20 to 30 kWh of free solar electricity into the EV between 10am and 4pm. Combined with smart overnight charging on Octopus Intelligent (around 7p per kWh), Ellon commuters cut their annual fuel cost from £1,500+ on petrol to under £150 on electricity.

Faithful Spark designs and installs the whole stack from one contractor: MCS registered solar PV (610/4841/0), Battery Energy Storage (610/4840/9), and EV charger (610/4640/1). One survey, one quote, one warranty.

OZEV £350 Grant

OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant for Ellon residents.

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) operates the EV Chargepoint Grant, worth up to £350 toward the cost of a domestic chargepoint installation. The grant has changed several times. The current 2026 rules limit eligibility to specific Ellon residents, not all homeowners.

You are eligible for the OZEV grant if:

  • You live in a rented residential property (private rental).
  • You own a flat, regardless of whether you live in it or let it.
  • You are a leaseholder in a building of multiple residences.
  • You live in a residential property and have off street parking on a private driveway.
  • You have a fully electric or eligible plug in hybrid vehicle on order, leased, or owned.

You are not eligible if:

  • You own a detached or semi detached house. (Owner occupier exclusion since 2022.)
  • You have previously claimed the grant at the same property.

The grant covers up to 75% of the installation cost, capped at £350. Faithful Spark is an OZEV approved chargepoint installer, so we submit the £350 grant on your behalf and apply it as a discount on your install. Customers can verify our status on the OZEV register at gov.uk.

Why It Has To Be a Qualified Installer

An EV charger is a dedicated electrical installation. Choose accordingly.

The wrong RCD type, the wrong cable size, or the wrong DNO notification can create a fire risk, invalidate your home insurance, and put your manufacturer warranty at risk. EV chargers must be installed under BS 7671 18th Edition by a competent person, with the correct Type A or Type B RCD, the correct circuit protective device, and notification to SSEN (the local Distribution Network Operator covering Ellon and the wider AB41 area).

NICEIC approval means our work is inspected and certified by the UK's leading electrical safety body. City & Guilds Level 3 EV Charging qualification means Steven has formally trained on the specific safety requirements of vehicle to grid installation.

EV Charger Ellon FAQs

Common questions about EV charger installation in Ellon.

Don't see your question? Call 07304 027013 or email us and we will come back the same business day.

How much does an EV charger cost to install in Ellon?

A standard 7.4kW smart EV charger costs from £900 + VAT installed in Ellon. Premium tethered units like the Hypervolt Pro 3 start from £1,295 + VAT. Solar surplus charger (Zappi) from £1,195 + VAT. Eligible renters and flat owners save up to £350 through the OZEV grant.

Will it work for my Aberdeen commute?

Yes. A 7.4kW home charger adds around 200 to 300 miles of range overnight between 11pm and 6am on Octopus Go or Octopus Intelligent. The Ellon to Aberdeen commute is around 16 miles each way. A typical 10,000 mile a year commute costs around £200 in electricity on a smart tariff, compared with £1,460 on petrol or diesel.

How fast is a Castle Park or Riverside install?

Most new build estate installs in Ellon take 3 to 4 hours total. We arrive at 9am, you are charging by 1pm. The modern RCBO consumer units already have a free way, the cable run is short, and there is rarely any consumer unit upgrade work required.

How long does an EV charger install take?

A typical Ellon home install takes 3 to 4 hours on site. Same day install if your supply is suitable, no consumer unit upgrade is needed, and the cable run is under 15 metres. New build estate installs often complete within half a day.

Am I eligible for the OZEV £350 grant?

You are eligible if you are a renter, flat owner, or leaseholder in an eligible Ellon property with off street parking. Owner occupiers of detached or semi detached houses are no longer eligible since 2022. We submit the application on your behalf as an OZEV approved chargepoint installer.

What about rural Pitmedden, Methlick, or Tarves installs?

Rural AB41 properties often have longer driveways, sometimes overhead supply terminations, and sometimes three phase supplies still in place from agricultural use. We strongly recommend an on site survey. No additional travel charge from Ellon, under 15 minutes to most outlying villages.

Tethered or socketed, which should I choose?

Tethered chargers have the cable permanently attached, which is most convenient day to day. Socketed chargers let you swap the cable. Tethered is the better choice for single car households who charge in the same spot every day.

Can I pair an EV charger with solar at my Ellon home?

Yes. The Zappi diverts surplus solar into the car at the avoided import rate (24p per kWh in 2026) rather than selling it at 14.5p export. Castle Park and Riverside south facing roofs are particularly well suited for solar plus EV pairing. Steven holds the City & Guilds Level 3 Solar PV qualification.

Do I need a fuse board upgrade for an EV charger?

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit with Type A or Type B RCD protection. Castle Park, Riverside, and Tannery Walk new builds rarely need any upgrade. Older Ellon town centre properties with BS 3036 rewireable fuse boxes or split load boards usually need replacing at £550 to £950 + VAT.

Will my home insurance be affected?

A properly installed EV charger by a qualified installer is recognised by every UK home insurer. We provide a NICEIC Minor Works or Installation Certificate at completion. A non compliant install can invalidate your home insurance.
