Why a Maryculter run costs more than a town driveway.
On a tight town plot the charger sits a few metres from the consumer unit and the install is quick. South of the Dee that is rarely the case. What smart means, and why solar ready is a feature not a law.
There is a lot of loose talk about what a home charger must do. Here is the accurate version. Every new home charger fitted in Great Britain must be smart by law, under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, in force since 30 June 2022. Smart means scheduling, a default to off peak charging, and a randomised start delay so the grid is not hit all at once.
Solar ready is different. The law does not require it. It is simply a feature of the units we choose to fit. Every charger we install is smart, as the law requires, and solar ready, so it can charge from your own panels when you add them. For a rural Maryculter home with a generous roof, that pairing is the point.

A 7.4kW charger draws 32A, which is a meaningful new load on your supply. Under the Energy Networks Association (ENA) process, that load has to be notified to the Distribution Network Operator. We handle that notification for you, usually applying before the install, or fitting load management where the supply is tight so the demand is kept within limits. Either way, the paperwork is ours, not yours.
This matters more in the country than in town. Rural feeders are longer and more loaded, so the right answer is sometimes a load managed install rather than an unmanaged 32A circuit. We assess that at the survey and tell you the honest position before anything is ordered.

Faster charging where a smallholding already has three phase.
Most homes are single phase, and a 7.4kW charger is the right and sensible choice for them. But some larger Maryculter properties and working smallholdings already have a three phase supply in for machinery, pumps or a workshop. Where that is the case, a 22kW unit becomes possible, and it charges a compatible car roughly three times faster than a standard home charger.

EV Charger Grants, the Accurate Position
What a Maryculter household can actually claim in 2026.
There is a lot of out of date grant information online, so here is the honest 2026 picture. The EV chargepoint grant is £500 per socket from 1 April 2026, but it is only for renters and flat owners with private off street parking and landlord or freeholder permission, funded to 31 March 2027. It is not available to a typical Maryculter homeowner with a driveway, so we will not pretend it is.
Separately, Scotland's Energy Saving Trust domestic chargepoint funding of up to £400 is aimed at rural, remote and island residents under an income cap. Some Maryculter homes could in principle fit the rural criteria, but the scheme is currently closed, so treat it as subject to availability rather than something to count on. My garage is a long way from the house. Can you still fit a charger?
