Old Boards

The boards we still find behind cupboard doors in older Aberdeenshire homes.

Housing across the shire runs from pre war granite cottages to modern estates, and the oldest stock has often never been touched at the board since the seventies or eighties. What comes off the wall tends to be one of these:

  • Rewireable fuse wire boards. The BS 3036 type, with fuse carriers you rewire by hand. No RCD protection anywhere, no miniature breakers, and no additional protection for socket circuits, cables buried in walls, or anything outdoors.
  • Early plastic split load units. The first generation of one or two RCD plus breaker boards. The enclosure is combustible, which is no longer permitted, and the shared RCD design means a single earth fault can drop half the board at once.
  • No RCD boards. Installations that predate residual current protection entirely and are still in daily service.
  • Full boards with no spare ways. Perfectly functional, but with nothing left to add a shower, an EV charger, a heat pump or an outbuilding circuit onto.

Rural boards accrete more than a town semi. Decades of additions for outbuildings, borehole pumps, workshops and the odd bit of farm hand wiring mean the board is often doing more than it was ever designed for. Why RCBO Out Here

On a working rural property, one fault should not black out the whole holding.

The reason we fit a full RCBO board rather than the older split load design is not a sales line, it is about what happens when something goes wrong. An RCBO gives every circuit its own combined overload and earth fault protection. A fault on the barn lighting, the borehole pump or a garden socket trips only that circuit, and everything else stays live.

That matters far more in the country than in a town flat. On an old dual RCD board, a single earth fault takes out an entire bank of circuits at once, and nuisance tripping is common where many circuits share one device. Out here, losing the whole supply can mean losing the heating, the water pump and a freezer full of the year's produce, sometimes while you are away from the property.

  • Each circuit isolated, so a fault in one building does not darken the rest.
  • No shared RCD to nuisance trip a whole bank on a damp morning.
  • Faults are far quicker to trace when the tripped circuit tells you where to look.
  • Room designed in for the loads a rural home is likely to add next.

TT Earthing

A rural board upgrade on a TT supply is a different arrangement entirely.

This is the part no local competitor explains, and it changes how the board is designed. Where a rural property is fed by an overhead line, the network frequently provides no earth, so the property stands on its own earth electrode, a rod in the ground. That is a TT installation.

Because the earth fault path runs through the soil, the impedance is high and the ordinary breakers cannot clear an earth fault quickly enough on their own. So the whole installation has to lean on RCD protection. In practice that means every circuit on an RCBO, and on many TT properties a 100 mA time delayed main switch at the front so the arrangement discriminates properly. A fault on a final circuit trips the 30 mA device for that circuit first, and the time delayed device only steps in as a backup, so a single fault does not black out the whole property.

We describe that as the arrangement we normally use on a TT supply rather than a rule with a regulation number, because the regulations set the outcome and leave the design to the installer. A TT board upgrade is quoted differently for good reason, and it sometimes includes checking or renewing the earth electrode itself, which a town property on a network earth simply does not have.

The Honest Part

Sometimes the upgrade uncovers wiring the new board will not tolerate.

A modern RCBO board is much less forgiving of old wiring faults than the fuse wire board it replaces. On older rural installations, the survey and testing quite often turn up things that have been sitting hidden for years:

  • Borrowed neutrals, where one circuit's neutral has been shared with another. Harmless on a fuse board, but it makes an RCBO trip, and the circuits have to be separated first.
  • No earth at the lighting. Old two core lighting wiring with no protective conductor, so metal fittings and switches have nothing to earth to. That may need remedial work or a rewire of the affected circuits.
  • Shared or hybrid circuits, undersized cable, and perished rubber or lead insulation on the oldest runs.

Sometimes the board can go on exactly as planned. Sometimes the honest answer is that the installation needs some remedial work, or a partial rewire, before a modern board can be signed off safely. We would far rather tell you that at the survey than discover it with the old board already off the wall, which is exactly why we assess and test before giving a firm quote rather than after.

What The Regulations Actually Require

Steel enclosures, surge protection, and the myths worth clearing up.

There is a lot of confident but wrong information online about consumer units. Here is the accurate version, and where it matters for a rural Aberdeenshire property.

  • Metal enclosure. Since 1 January 2016, under regulation 421.1.201, a consumer unit in a domestic property must have a non combustible enclosure. Steel satisfies it, which is why old plastic cased boards are replaced with steel units. This one genuinely is a requirement.
  • Surge protection. Under Section 443 a surge protection device is now the default expectation on a new board unless a risk assessment allows it to be left out. It matters more on a rural overhead supply, which is more exposed to lightning and switching surges, and it protects the electronics that a modern home leans on: heat pump controls, an EV charger, and everything with a circuit board in it.
  • Arc fault detection. Under regulation 421.1.7, arc fault detection devices are a requirement only in higher risk residential buildings, houses in multiple occupation, purpose built student accommodation and care homes. For an ordinary farmhouse or cottage they are a recommended option, not a legal must, and we will not tell you otherwise to sell you one.
  • Part P does not apply in Scotland. It is part of the Building Regulations for England and Wales. Scotland runs its own building standards system, and a registered electrician certifies the work and handles the reporting route. Any site telling you about "Part P notification" in Scotland has it wrong.
  • You should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. A board change is new work, so it warrants a full EIC with every circuit tested against the new protective devices. That is a different document from an EICR, which is a periodic inspection report. See our EICR in Aberdeenshire page if that is what you actually need.
  • Landlords. If you let the property, Scotland's Repairing Standard requires at least one 30 mA RCD in the main or principal consumer unit, and its absence means the house does not comply. That is a residual current protection duty on private rentals, not a blanket order to replace every board in the county.

Two Practical Questions

Who turns the power off, and will the new board take an EV charger?

  • Turning the power off. To change a board the supply has to be isolated, and the main fuse and cut out belong to the network, not to you or to us. For a straightforward change we manage the isolation safely ourselves. Where the main fuse rating, the meter tails, the cut out or the main earthing need attention, SSEN is the party to involve, because they own the seal on the main fuse. On a rural upgrade that is a normal part of the job and we coordinate it rather than leaving you to.
  • Adding an EV charger or a heat pump. Both need a board with spare ways and enough capacity, assessed against the property's maximum demand. An old full board is a blocker to either. If you know an EV charger or a heat pump is coming, the sensible move is to size the new board for it once, rather than upgrade twice. My property has more than one fuse box. Do they all need upgrading?

Not automatically, but they are assessed together as one installation. A farmhouse with a board in the house and another in the steading or workshop is common here, and each board is inspected on its merits. Sometimes only the main board needs replacing, sometimes an outbuilding board is the priority. We look at the whole installation and tell you what actually needs doing rather than replacing everything by default.

What is a TT earthing system and why does my rural board upgrade need a different arrangement?

It means your property has its own earth rod rather than an earth from the network, which is common where the supply comes in overhead. Because the earth fault path runs through the soil, ordinary breakers cannot clear a fault quickly enough on their own, so the whole installation relies on RCD protection. We fit every circuit on an RCBO and, on many TT properties, a 100 mA time delayed main switch so the board discriminates properly and one fault does not black out the whole place.

Do I need surge protection if my supply comes in on overhead poles?

It is strongly worth it. Surge protection is now the default on a new board unless a risk assessment allows it to be omitted, and an overhead rural supply is more exposed to lightning and switching surges than an underground one. It protects the things a modern home depends on, such as heat pump controls, an EV charger and anything with electronics in it. We will tell you honestly whether your situation justifies it.

Is arc fault protection a legal requirement for my house?

For an ordinary home, no. Arc fault detection devices are only a requirement in specific higher risk premises such as houses in multiple occupation, purpose built student accommodation, care homes and higher risk residential buildings. For a normal farmhouse or cottage they are a recommended option you can choose to add, not a legal must, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What happens if you start the upgrade and the old wiring cannot take a modern board?

We try to find that out before we start, which is why we assess and test before giving a firm quote. Older rural wiring sometimes hides borrowed neutrals or lighting circuits with no earth, which a modern RCBO board will not tolerate. Where that turns up, the honest answer is that some remedial work or a partial rewire is needed first. We will set that out clearly rather than discover it with the old board already off the wall.

Who switches the power off, and do you need to involve SSEN?

For a straightforward change we isolate the supply safely ourselves. The main fuse and cut out belong to SSEN, the network operator, so where the main fuse rating, the meter tails, the cut out or the main earthing need attention, they are the party to involve. On a rural upgrade that is a normal part of the job and we coordinate it for you.

Will my whole house lose power for the whole day?

The power is off for the changeover, usually a few hours rather than the whole day, and most straightforward upgrades are a one day job. On a larger rural installation with several boards it can take longer, and we will give you a realistic timescale at the survey so you can plan around it, especially where there are freezers or water pumps to think about.

My board is full and I want to add an EV charger. Do I need to upgrade first?

Usually yes. An EV charger and a heat pump both need a spare way and enough capacity on the board, assessed against the property's maximum demand, and an old full board has neither. The sensible approach is to size the new board once for what you are planning to add, rather than upgrade it twice. We can scope the board and the charger together.
