Is Your Ellon Home Ready for an EV Charger? A 5-Point Electrical Check

Electric vehicles are becoming part of everyday life across Aberdeenshire, and Ellon is no different. Whether you have just taken delivery of a new EV, are buying one in the next few months, or simply want to be ready before you commit, one question comes up time and time again: is my home actually ready for a charger?

The short answer is that most homes in Ellon are ready or close to ready. But there are five specific things a qualified electrician needs to check before any installation goes ahead. Getting these right from the start means no surprises on the day, no delays, and a charger that works safely for the life of your vehicle.

Why a pre-installation check matters

A home EV charger is not a plug-in appliance. A standard 7kW wallbox draws 32 amps continuously during a charge session, which can last several hours. That puts it in a completely different category to a kettle or even an electric shower, which only runs for a few minutes at a time.

Under BS 7671 Section 722 (the IET Wiring Regulations covering EV charging), every home charger installation must have its own dedicated circuit, appropriate protective devices, and a compliant earthing arrangement. None of that can be checked from the driveway. It requires an experienced electrician to assess your property before work begins.

The good news is that the check itself is quick. Here is exactly what your installer will look at.


Check 1: Your main fuse rating

The main fuse is the large fuse fitted by your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) where the electricity supply enters your home. In most Ellon properties built since the 1990s, this will be rated at 80 or 100 amps, which is more than sufficient for a 7.4kW charger running alongside your normal household loads.

Where problems sometimes arise is in older properties. Pre-1980s homes may have a 60 amp or even a 30 amp main fuse, which may not comfortably handle the additional 32 amp load of an EV charger without tripping.

The fix is usually straightforward. In many cases the DNO (for most of Aberdeenshire that is Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, or SSEN) will upgrade the main fuse to 80 or 100 amps for free. Your installer contacts them directly and arranges the upgrade before the charger goes in. If an upgrade is needed, build a few extra weeks into your timeline to allow for the DNO visit.

What a NICEIC-approved electrician checks: The rating stamped on the main fuse carrier, the condition of the meter tails, and whether the existing supply can carry the combined peak load of your household plus the charger.


Check 2: Consumer unit space and condition

Your consumer unit (sometimes called a fuse box) is where every circuit in your home originates. An EV charger must have its own dedicated radial circuit. That means it needs its own breaker in the consumer unit and cannot share a circuit with anything else in the house.

Three things matter here:

  • Available space: There needs to be at least one free slot in the consumer unit for a 32 amp RCBO (a combined circuit breaker and RCD in one device). If the board is full, a secondary consumer unit or board upgrade is required.
  • Type of protection: Under BS 7671 Amendment 4 (which becomes mandatory in October 2026), EV charging circuits require a minimum of Type A RCD protection. Older consumer units fitted with Type AC RCDs are not compliant for EV charger circuits. If your board has Type AC RCDs, your installer will either add a dedicated RCBO for the EV circuit or recommend a full board upgrade to bring it up to standard.
  • Age and condition: Older plastic consumer units from the 1980s and 1990s cannot safely house modern RCBO devices. A metal-clad consumer unit compliant with BS EN 60439 is required. If yours is plastic and outdated, a board upgrade will be needed as part of the installation.

If your consumer unit needs attention, do not see it as a problem. It is an opportunity to bring your entire electrical installation up to current standards at the same time, which adds value to your home and keeps your family safer.

Check 3: The cable route from board to charger

Once the consumer unit is confirmed, the next question is how the cable gets from inside the house to the charger position outside. This sounds simple, but the route, the length, and how the cable is installed all affect what size cable your electrician needs to use.

The standard cable for a 7kW EV charger circuit is 6mm² twin-and-earth for runs up to around 10 to 15 metres in most conditions. Longer runs, cables installed in thermal insulation, or cables run underground typically require 10mm² to keep voltage drop within the limits set by BS 7671.

For outdoor installations, the cable route also determines whether steel wire armoured (SWA) cable is needed. Any cable buried in the ground must be armoured, laid at the correct depth, and protected by route markers.

Your installer will plan the most practical route for your specific property. In most Ellon homes with a standard driveway layout, this is a straightforward job. Older granite properties or homes where the consumer unit is at the opposite end of the house from the parking can require a bit more planning, but it is always solvable.

Check 4: PME earthing and outdoor protection

This is the one that catches a lot of homeowners and even some less experienced electricians off guard. It is also the most important safety check of all.

The vast majority of UK homes, including most properties in Ellon, are connected using a PME supply (Protective Multiple Earthing). In a PME system, the neutral and earth conductors are combined in the distribution network. This is perfectly safe for indoor electrical installations, but it creates a specific risk for outdoor EV chargers.

If there is a fault on the local distribution network, a dangerous voltage can appear on the earthing system. If your EV charger uses the PME earth and your car is connected, that voltage could appear on the car body. This is not a theoretical risk. It is why BS 7671 Section 722.411.4.1 specifically prohibits outdoor EV chargers from relying solely on a PME earth.

Every NICEIC-approved installer must provide one of three compliant solutions:

  • Earth electrode: A copper earth rod is driven into the ground at the charger location. This provides an independent earth path that does not rely on the PME system.
  • PEN fault detection device: An electronic device that continuously monitors the integrity of the earth and disconnects the charger instantly if a fault is detected.
  • Charger with built-in PEN protection: Several modern chargers, including some Ohme and Zappi models, include PEN fault detection built into the unit itself.

Check 5: Wi-Fi signal at the charger location

Since June 2022, all new home EV chargers installed in Great Britain must be smart chargers. This is a legal requirement under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. A non-smart charger cannot be legally installed in a new domestic installation.

Smart chargers need a connection to your home Wi-Fi to function. This enables features like off-peak scheduling, load management, and remote monitoring through an app. It is also how the charger reports usage data to the network as required by the regulations.

In most Ellon homes, getting a Wi-Fi signal to the driveway or garage is straightforward. But if your router is at the back of the house and the parking is at the front, you may get a weak signal at the charger location. Your installer will test this during the survey.

The fix is usually a simple Wi-Fi extender or a powerline adapter, which costs very little and takes minutes to set up. It is worth testing your signal before the installation day to avoid any delays.

OZEV grant eligibility note: From April 2026, the EV Chargepoint Grant increased to £500 per socket (covering 75% of the installed cost). However, the grant is now only available to renters, flat owners, and landlords. If you own your house outright or have a mortgage on a house, you no longer qualify for this grant. How long does installation take?

Do I need planning permission for an EV charger in Ellon?

In most cases, no. Since May 2025, planning permission is no longer required for the majority of domestic EV charger installations in Scotland. Can I charge my EV from a standard 13 amp socket?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended as a long-term solution. A standard socket charges at around 2.3kW, which adds roughly 8 miles of range per hour. A 7kW wallbox adds around 30 miles per hour, which means most cars are fully charged overnight. For daily use, a dedicated wallbox is significantly more practical and is the only compliant option for homes requiring OZEV grant-eligible installation.

What certificate do I get after installation?

You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) confirming the installation complies with BS 7671. This document is important for your home insurance, for any future property sale, and as proof of compliance with current regulations.
